      ELLEN BERRY, 62, of Central Lake, died Sunday, June 13, 2004, at Meadow Brook Medical Care Facility in Bellaire.
      Private services will take place.
      The Central Lake Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes is in charge of arrangements.
     
      FLORENCE R. CLEAVER, 96, of South Boardman, died Sunday, June 13, 2004, at the Meadow Brook Medical Care Facility in Bellaire.
      Visitation will take place today, June 15, from 6 to 9 p.m. at Wolfe Funeral Home in Kalkaska.
      Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 16, at the funeral home, with visitation one hour prior to the service. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery.
     
      REV. DR. RONALD S. FREEL, 72, of Boulder City, Nev., formerly of northern Michigan, passed away suddenly from heart failure on Friday, June 4, 2004.
      Visitation was held at Palm Mortuary in Henderson, Nev.
      Services were held June 9; formal church services were held June 10 at Grace Community Church in Boulder City. Burial will be in Palm Gardens in Boulder City.
      A memorial celebration dinner honoring Rev. Freel will be held by his congregation at Grace Community Church in Boulder City on June 25, 2004.
     
      WILLIAM THOMAS LEE, 57, of Bellaire, died Sunday, June 13, 2004, at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.
      Memorial services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, June 19, at the Alba Pentecostal Tabernacle.
      Arrangements are being handled by the Bellaire Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes.
      Graveside Masonic services for GEORGE E. WOLLAM, 89, of Traverse City, who died Feb. 22, 2004, will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, June 19, at Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens in Traverse City.
      Arrangements were made by Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home, Traverse City.
     
      ELK RAPIDS - Peter A. Bash, DDS, 86, of Elk Rapids and formerly of Hemlock, died June 12, 2004, at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.
      He was born in Austin, Pa., on April 30, 1918, the son of Antonio and Angela (Ciafferi) Bash. On June 9, 1947, in East Detroit, he married the former Marian C. Christenson, who preceded him in death in 2003.
      Dr. Bash practiced dentistry for 32 years in Bridgeport, Tucson, Ariz., and Hemlock, where he retired in 1984. He graduated from Marquette University Dental School in Milwaukee, Wis., where he was a member of Alpha Omega Honors Fraternity. He was also a member of the American Dental Association, the Michigan Dental Association, Saginaw County Dental Society and the Saginaw Gun Club, Trout Unlimited, and the Michigan Nut Growers Association.
      Dr. Bash was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army Air Corps as a pilot. He was an avid horticulturist and gardener.
      Dr. Bash is survived by three sons, Earl R. (Sherry) Bash of Saginaw, Dr. Eric Bash of Hemlock and Dr. Ralph Bash of Tempe, Ariz.; a daughter, Martha (Andrew) Thomas of Ben Lomand, Calif.; two grandchildren, Hilarie (Mark) Zarazua and Mark R. Bash; two brothers, Dr. Nicholas (Octavia) Bash and Dr. P. Vito Bash; a sister, Mary Sweet; brother-in-law, Carl (Shirley) Christenson; and sister-in-law, Joycelynn Bash; and numerous nieces and nephews.
      He was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Marian C. (Christenson) Bash.
      The Bash family would like to extend a special thank you to Mr. Bill Cook for his kind and compassionate care he provided for Peter.
      Visitation will take place Friday, June 18, from noon until the prayer service at 1 p.m. at the Elk Rapids Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes.
      Burial will be in Oakgrove Cemetery in Morenci, where full military honors will take place.
      Memorials may be given to the AMVETS, 410 Bridge St., Elk Rapids.
      Arrangements have been entrusted to the Elk Rapids Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes.
     
      IRONS - Carl Earnest "Swede" Carlson, 90, of Irons, died Sunday, June 13, 2004, at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.
      He was born in Brethren on March 13, 1914, the son of Charles F. and Cora (Keith) Carlson. On May 28, 1939, he married Evelyn Wisely in Traverse City. She preceded him in death on Feb. 17, 1997.
      Carl worked as a boiler fireman at Shaw Box Crane Inc. in Muskegon. He was a member of the Muskegon Heights Eagles Aerie #2106.
      Swede liked to hunt and fish, especially sucker fishing. He also liked talking to people and enjoyed going to casinos. He loved his family and spent as much time as he could with his numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
      He is survived by four children, Charles (Barbara) Carlson of Muskegon, Bonnie (James) Wahr of Irons, Betty (Jim) Risden of Wellston, and Charlotte (John) Suzor of Missoula, Mont.; his sister, Lillian Paulson of Muskegon; a brother, Alfred John Leas of Oregon; as well as numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
      Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, June 21, at Martinson Funeral Home in Suttons Bay, with Rev. Wayne Price officiating. Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery in Keswick.

      KALKASKA - Jay A. Doe, 92, of Kalkaska, passed away on June 12, 2004, at Kalkaska Memorial Health Center–LTC.
      Born on Feb. 29, 1912, in Bad Axe, he was the son of Joseph and Lea (Santhany) Doe. Jay married Laura Compau on Aug. 6, 1921, in Lincoln Park.
      Jay was a resident of Kalkaska since 1960. He was a member of the Moose Lodge and Lions Club.
      Jay is survived by his son, Wilfred "Bud" (Bonnie) Doe of Arizona; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and dear friend Mildred Giganti of South Boardman.
      Jay was preceded in death by his wife, Laura; and his son, Jake Doe.
      The funeral service was held on Monday, June 14, at 11 a.m. at Wolfe Funeral Home. Rev. William Kuiper of Evergreen Bible Baptist Church officiated. Interment was in Evergreen Cemetery.
      Arrangements were made by Wolfe Funeral Home, Kalkaska.

      GRAND RAPIDS - Jean Marie Graves, 72, of Grand Rapids, passed away Sunday, June 13, 2004, at Spectrum Health Hospital-Butterworth Campus, after a sudden illness.
      Jean was a loving mother and a wonderful wife, and touched the hearts of many others. She worked for 25 years as a medical surgical clerk for Charlevoix Area Hospital.
      Jean is survived by her husband, Russ Graves, a former counselor, athletic director and coach at Central Lake High School. She is also survived by her children, Debbie, Pete, Russ, Rhonda and Andy; 10 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
      She was preceded in death by a son, Robert.
      Visitation will be held Wednesday, June 16, from 3 to 6 p.m. at the Central Lake Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes. A private graveside service for immediate family will follow.

      TRAVERSE CITY - Henry August Karla, 97, of Traverse City, died Sunday, June 13, 2004, at Munson Hospice House.
      One of 12 children, Henry was born on Sept. 3, 1906, in Germany, the son of Wilhelmine (Gogalla) and Karl Karla. He came to this country in 1928, residing in the Detroit area. In 1983 he moved to Traverse City. On Dec. 1, 1934, he married Mildred F. Gardner in Detroit; she preceded him in death in June of 1986.
      Henry had been a tool and die welder for the Chrysler Corp., retiring in 1962. A lifelong member of the Detroit Masonic Lodge, Henry became a member of the Traverse City Lodge 222 F & AM upon his move here. In 1997, he was honored as the Mason of the Year. He was a member of High 12 of the Masonic Lodge, received the Lou B. Windsor award in 2002 from the Traverse City Masonic Lodge, and was also a member of the Eagles.
      Henry enjoyed very much his association and friends at the Traverse City Senior Center. He was a member of Central United Methodist Church.
      Henry enjoyed soccer in his younger years and played semi-pro soccer with the Detroit Sport Club #24, of which he had been a member for over 50 years. He always enjoyed fishing, a good game of cards and classical music, attending many events at Interlochen.
      Survivors include his children, Robert Karla of Utica and Barbara (Fred) Wirth of Traverse City; his grandchildren, Lori (Vic) Wirth-Browning and Heidi (Daniel) Stoudt, all of Traverse City, Jeanne R. (John) Alspaugh of Scottsdale, Ariz.; his great grandchildren, Ethan and Maggie Stoudt; a brother, Emil in Germany; and his dear friend and companion of many years, Elizabeth "Beth" Pelton of Traverse City. Also surviving are many nieces and nephews in Germany.
      In addition to his wife, Henry was preceded in death by his parents and 10 siblings.
      Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, June 17, at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home, with The Rev. John Ellinger officiating. Burial will be in Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens.
      Visitation will take place at the funeral home Wednesday, June 16, from 6 until 8 p.m., with a Masonic Candelight Service taking place at 7:30 p.m.
      The family suggests that memorial contributions in Henry's name be directed to Munson Hospice House in lieu of flowers.
     
      TRAVERSE CITY - Bessie Meyer, 91, of Traverse City, died peacefully Sunday morning, June 13, 2004, at her home following a long illness.
      Born June 23, 1912, in Traverse City, she was the daughter of Rudolph and Antonia (Cerny) Blazek. On April 19, 1933, in Traverse City, she married Joseph Meyer.
      A Traverse City native, Bessie was a member of Garfield Ladies Club and a member of the Retired State Employees Association. She retired from the Traverse City State Hospital in 1971, after many years of employment.
      Bessie enjoyed sewing, gardening, and traveling. Recently, the Meyer family transferred the ownership of their 95 acre farm to Grand Traverse County for use as a public park area. Their generosity will be a lasting land legacy for the people of Traverse City and the surrounding areas to enjoy.
      Survivors include her husband, Joseph of Traverse City; two sons, Lewis (Lyn) Meyer of Berwyn, Pa., and Robert (Karen) Meyer of Anchorage, Alaska; five grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Jennie Getchel of Traverse City.
      Bessie was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Joseph Blazek, who died in France during World War II, and Rudolph Blazek; and two sisters, Rose Bohrer and Alice Schardt.
      Services will be held at 2 p.m. at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City on Thursday, June 17, with visitation one hour prior to the services. The Rev. Dr. Gary Hogue will officiate. Burial will follow in Oakwood Cemetery.
      In remembrance, memorials may be directed to The Salvation Army.
     
      SUTTONS BAY - Edna C. Rosenfield, 79, of Suttons Bay, died Friday, June 11, 2004, at Munson Hospice House.
      Born Sept. 20, 1924, in Wayne County, she was the daughter of Louis A. and Bertha (Leimback) Trombley. On Feb. 10, 1945, in Wyandotte, she married John P. Rosenfield, who preceded her in death on Jan. 10, 2003.
      Edna had been employed as the purchasing agent for Ford Motor Company and later worked in the secretarial offices for both Henry Fords.
      Edna was an outstanding organic horticulturist, master gardener, landscape critic, and an accredited life flower show emeritus judge.
      Edna was a life member and past president of The Friendly Garden Club since 1978, where she founded the Garden Walk. She was also a life member of the Federated Garden Club of Michigan, serving on the FGCM state board for 10 years; a life member of the National Federated Garden Club; a member of the Punta Gorda Florida Garden Club; and the founder and charter member of the Cherryland Garden Club.
      Survivors include her sister, Viola Trombley; her dog, Katy-Did; 15 nieces; 17 nephews; over 60 great-nieces and great-nephews; and her many friends and members of The Friendly Garden Club and The Cherryland Garden Club.
      A memorial Mass will be celebrated at St. Francis Catholic Church on Thursday, June 17, at 10 a.m. The Rev. Fr. James Gardiner will serve as celebrant.
      Memorials may be directed to the GTA Children's Garden in care of the GT Regional Community Foundation, 250 East Front Street, Traverse City, MI 49684.

      LAKE ANN - Jayn Antoinette Strunk, 64, a homemaker of Lake Ann, died Monday, June 14, 2004, at Munson Medical Center.
      Born March 7, 1940, in Detroit, she was the daughter of John and Jayn (Lapham) LaBudda. On Aug 26, 1961, in Flat Rock, she married John Strunk, who survives.
      Formerly of Benton Harbor, Jayn moved to the Lake Ann area in 2002.
      She enjoyed all animals, especially dogs; she raised horses, and was known as a kind of "horse whisperer."
      Jayn enjoyed sewing clothes for the family, crocheting, crafts and reading. She was also an avid lighthouse collector and enjoyed making cookies for the Barbershop Chorus.
      Jayn was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church in Interlochen, a long time member of St. Matthew's Lutheran Church in Benton Harbor, and a member of Builders for Christ, where she and her husband traveled in their motor home to work sites.
      Jayn will be fondly remembered as a loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother and will be dearly missed.
      Along with her husband John, Jayn is survived by her children, Martha Strunk of Benton Harbor, Emilie (Mark) McConnell of Conroe, Texas, Sarah (Rich) Pollard and Luke (Wendy) Strunk, of Watervliet, Philip (Kristina) Strunk of Coloma; 12 grandchildren; brother, Steven LaBudda of Flat Rock; and an aunt, Katherine Austin of Flat Rock.
      She was preceded in death by her parents.
      A funeral service will be held at at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, June 16, at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Interlochen, where friends may visit one hour prior to the service. Pastor Timothy Mowry will officiate the service. Burial will be in Lake Ann Cemetery.
      Memorials may be directed to either Redeemer Lutheran Church or the Lutheran Women's Missionary League.
      The family is being served by the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City.
     

      MIDLAND - Diane (Hawley) Thompson, 38, of Midland, died Saturday, June 12, 2004.
      Born Jan. 30, 1966, of Detroit, she was the daughter of Clyde and Marie (DeVries) Hawley.
      Diane spent most of her life in Traverse City, where she was a 1984 graduate of Traverse City High School. She was a member of Midland Baptist Church and volunteered at Mid Michigan Hospital.
      Survivors include her mother, Marie Korb of Traverse City; two sisters, Debbie (Jeff) Drinkert of Roanoke, Va., and Denise (Don) Neihardt of Milwaukee, Wis.; grandmother, Mary DeVries of Traverse City; nieces and nephew, Lydia and Evan Drinkert and Brittany Neihardt.
      Diane was preceded in death by her father, Clyde Hawley; paternal grandparents, Clyde and Reba Hawley; and maternal grandfather, Andrew DeVries.
      Funeral services will be held at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City on Wednesday, June 16, 2004, at 11 a.m., with visitation one hour prior to the service. The Rev. Paul Targes will officiate the service. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery.
      In remembrance, memorial contributions may be directed to the diabetic unit of Mid Michigan Medical Center in Midland.

      RAPID CITY - Howard C. Wilson, 53, of Rapid City, formerly of the Flint area, died Thursday, June 10, 2004, at his residence.
      Howard was born, in Flint, on Feb. 22, 1951, the son of Harry and Irene (Lloyd) Wilson. He had resided in the Flint area most of his life.
      Mr. Wilson was an avid outdoorsman and Harley Davidson motorcyclist. Employed by General Motors Chevrolet, in the metal fab division, he retired in 2003.
      Howard is survived by a son, Howard "Howdy" (Michelle) Wilson; a daughter, Tamara "Tammy" Wilson of Flint; six grandchildren, Bethany, Garrett, Tyler "Bommer," Trent, Derrick and Kyle; the mother of his children and his friend, Barbara Wilson of Mt. Morris; brothers, Leroy (Shirley) Wilson of Mt. Pleasant, Harry Wayne Wilson of Cheasing and Dale Wilson of Montrose; sisters, Betty Vincent of Fla., and Mary Kachelsky; a host of other relatives; and special friend of 15 years, Linda Decker of Rapid City and her family, Erick and Edan.
      He was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister, Josephine Conrad.
      The family will receive visitors today, June 15, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 9 p.m., at the Groves Chapel Hansen Funeral Home, 421 N. Main St., in Davison.
      A Celebration of Life service will be held on Wednesday, June 16, at 1 p.m., also at the funeral home.
      For those that desire, contributions may be made to the family for a future memorial.
     

      TRAVERSE CITY - Howard D. Wilson, 75, of Traverse City, died Saturday, June 12, 2004, at Munson Medical Center.
      Formerly of Jackson and Marquette, he had been a resident of Traverse City for the past seven years. He was a 1946 graduate of Rochester High School and graduated from Michigan State University in 1956 with a bachelors of science degree in agricultural engineering.
      Mr. Wilson worked with the United States Department of Agriculture's Soil Conservation Service, retiring in 1990 as a civil engineer after 33 years of service.
      While in Marquette, Howard was a member of Range Engineers, the Marquette Golf and Country Club, the Messiah Lutheran Church, where he was a member of the church council, and was an active worker for the North Country Trail, and served on the Presque Isle Park Advisory Committee.
      In Traverse City, Mr. Wilson was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church, where he was a member of the Tuesday morning retirees, and a member of the Newcomer's Club. He was a life member of the MSU Alumni Association and the Association of Retired Soil Conservation Service Employees.
      Born Oct. 27, 1928, in Milford, he was the son of Howard and Harriet (Dunlap) Wilson. On Aug. 18, 1962, at Bethany Lutheran Church in Northport, he married the former Emily Jean Dalzell, who survives.
      Also surviving are two daughters, Janet (Thomas) Denton of Traverse City and Sally Wilson of Marquette; son, David Wilson of Gaylord; two granddaughters, Sarah and Meghan Denton; brother, James (Jeane) Wilson of Marlette; sister, Beverly Schoch of Holland; step-brother, Carlton (Marcia) Musson of Vincetown, N.J.; and many nieces and nephews.
      Howard was preceded in death by his parents; step-mother, Inez Wilson; and step-brother, Donald Musson.
      Services will be held at Bethlehem Lutheran Church on Thursday, June 17, 2004, at 11 a.m., with visitation one hour prior to the service. The Rev. Dr. David Gabel and The Rev. Bradley Will are officiating the services.
      Memorials may be directed to either Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Traverse City or the Bethany Lutheran Church in Northport.
      Arrangements are by the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City.

      TRAVERSE CITY - Harley J. Van Epps, 77, of Ocala, Fla., formerly of Traverse City, died Saturday, June 5, 2004.
      He was born Aug. 4, 1926, in Madison Township, the son of Viola (Orvis) Padgett and step-father Reese Padgett. On April 4, 1970, he married Beverly Haywood.
      Mr. Van Epps was the owner and operator of Van's Disposal Service from 1955 to 1990, when he sold the business and retired to Ocala, Fla. He was a member of the Marine Corps League and the National Rifle Association. He enjoyed watching television, and doing scroll saw work as a hobby. He was a Protestant.
      He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Beverly Van Epps; a daughter, Dorothy (Bob) Gillingham of Wyoming, Mich.; three step-sons, Donald (Bernie) Eckherdt of Ocala, Keith (Bonnie) Kroupa of Traverse City, and Isaac (LuAnn) Kroupa of Traverse City; two step-daughters, Vicky Kroupa of South Carolina and Brenda Kroupa of Richmond, Va.; a sister, Audrey Pellum of Flint; 10 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
      He was preceded in death by his mother, Viola Padgett; step-father, Reese Padgett; and two sisters, Wava Organek and Alberta Ballard.
      A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, June 19, at the Grawn United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens on Monday, June 21.
      In lieu of flowers memorials may be made in Mr. Van Epps name to Hospice.
      The Florida Cremation Society was in charge of arrangements.
