BINGHAM TOWNSHIP - Robert Jens Nielsen, of Bingham Township, was born in Detroit, on July 9, 1954, to Victor and Isabell Nielsen. Every bend in the river that was Rob's life was marked by curiosity, contrast, intensity, insight and appreciation. To his family, he was a passionate father, a doting-honey-doer husband, a devoted son, and our fearless little brother. Rob was loving, protective, courageous, stubborn and generous. His arms were open wide to all, welcoming everything that entered his life. He had a magnetic presence that attracted babies, animals, birds, butterflies; he loved all living things. He loved "the River," a family campsite in Grayling where he spent the majority of his weekends in the summer. Cindy and Rob shared many happy times together there. For those who camped with Rob, he always had the cure for the snakebite, and he loved to teach others about nature while watching the river flow by the light of the moon. His domain was "Rob's World," a custom-crafted garage workshop and getaway place-enter at your own risk and on Rob's terms. He was intelligent, creative and hardworking. He was a perfectionist and was very humble about the works of art he made in his workshop. Rob was a third-generation mason who worked for Easling Construction for the last 15 years. He was known by his co-workers as 'Silverback,' 'Chief,' and 'KemoRobbie.' He leaves a legacy of fine stone masonry throughout the State and our community. He would give generously of his time and expertise to anyone who needed a hand. He was a hopeless romantic, his touch was both strong and soft, deliberate but gentle. He taught us how to really hug. Rob, you taught us how to let go-we will miss your side-splitting, contagious laughter. Rob, you taught us how to hold on-we will miss your all-encompassing embrace. Robbie is survived by his two children, Ryan and Dana Nielsen of Bingham Township; his mother, Isabell Nielsen of Suttons Bay; his brother, Tim Nielsen; and sisters, Kristi Romano and Tori Nielsen. He also leaves behind his other mother, Delores Manning of Shelby Township; and siblings-in-law, Kevin and Gary Manning, Emily Mitchell, and Jim Romano; and his 12 nieces and nephews, whom he loved as if they were his own children. Rob's beloved wife and soul mate of 26 years, Cindy Nielsen, died in June of 2003, in a car accident. They are rejoined in love once again, in the heavens above. He leaves behind a world full of friends and the admiration of anyone who ever knew him. Instead of flowers, a donation can be made, in Rob's memory, to the Grand Traverse Audubon Club, c/o 7429 E. Fouch Road, Traverse City, MI 49684, or Leader Dogs for the Blind, P.O. Box 5000, Rochester, MI 48308. In the meantime, Rob's children welcome cards and letters at his home address. Please send your thoughts for use in the celebration of Rob's life. A memorial service and celebration of his life will be held at Rob's home, 7134 Whispering Hills Dr., Traverse City, MI 49684, currently scheduled for June 5, 2004.
