FRANKLIN BEST, 67, of Gaylord, died on March 8, 2004.

      CARL J. 'SHORTY' EGELER, 69, a lifelong resident of Traverse City, died on Thursday, March 18, 2004, at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.
      Friends may call at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City on Tuesday, March 23, 2004, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. A scripture service will be held at 3:30 p.m., conducted by Sister Katherine. No other services will be held at this time.
     
      HAROLD ART HANSEN, 86, of Elberta, passed away on Thursday, March 18, 2004, at the Paul Oliver Memorial Hospital Long Term Care in Frankfort.
      Cremation has taken place. A memorial will be held at 1 p.m. today, March 20, 2004, at Paul Oliver Memorial Hospital LTC.
      The family has entrusted arrangements to the Frankfort Chapel of McElduff Funeral Homes.
     
      DR. THOMAS HIGGINS, 61, of Gaylord, died on Sunday, March 14, 2004.

      KATRINA KAY POPE, 31, of Brethren, died on Thursday, March 18, 2004.
      Visitation will be held today, March 20, 2004, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., at the Terwilliger Funeral Home in Kaleva. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Sunday, March 21, 2004, also at the funeral home, with Reverend Russ Garrigus officiating. Interment will be in the spring, in Brethren Cemetery.
     
      RANDY PRUSAKIEWICZ, 47, of Gaylord, died on Monday, March 15, 2004.

      TRAVERSE CITY - Martha Ann 'Marty' Byakowski, 67, of Traverse City, died on Thursday, March 18, 2004, at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City. A longtime resident of Traverse City area, she was born in Battle Creek, on July 27, 1936, the daughter of Harley G. and Martha Ann (Davis) Butler. Marty married Andrew Byakowski on April 27, 1972, in Traverse City; he called her his "Million Dollar Baby."
      Marty was employed at CRM in Traverse City, and was affiliated with the Seventh Day Adventist Church.
      She enjoyed crafts, gardening, painting, calligraphy, music and singing. She also wrote poetry.
      Marty is survived by her husband, Andy Byakowski of Traverse City; two daughters, Beth (Lester) Ayers of Battle Creek, and Becky (Kevin) Lotman of Farmington, Pa.; her son, Mike (Sharon) Byakowski of Kalkaska; 11 grandchildren; her mother, Maratha Ann Butler of Harlington, Texas; three sisters, Jeannine (Cliff) Berry of Lake Ann, Mary Karn of Harlington, Texas, and Becky Butler of Grawn; three brothers, David (Blanca) Butler of Harlington, Texas, Ben (Jeanne) Butler of Harlington, Texas, and Tom Butler of Austin, Texas; numerous nieces and nephews; and her special cat, Little Butch.
      She was preceded in death by her father; her son, Tom Colby; and her sister, Theresa Lucille Butler.
      Visitation will be held on Sunday, March 20, 2004, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., at Covell Funeral Homes in Traverse City. Funeral services will take place at 1 p.m. on Monday, March 21, 2004, also at the funeral home, with additional visitation one hour prior to the services.
      Arrangements have been entrusted to Covell Funeral Homes in Traverse City.
     
      FARMINGTON - Pearl M. Sanders died on Thursday, March 18, 2004.
      She was the beloved wife of the late William, who died in December of 1997, the loving mother of Ann (Keith) Koe and Billie Sue Inasy, and the sister of Philip Bosmier, Christine Griffith, and James Bosmier. She is also survived by her granddaughter, Paula Inasy; and four great-grandchildren.
      Pearl was a member of the Rebekka Lodge and VFW Ladies Auxiliary, both downriver, in the Detroit area. In addition to these involvements, she enjoyed crocheting and her family; she deeply missed her late husband, William, to whom she was married for 54 years.
      Visitation will be held today, March 20, 2004, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., at the Heeney-Sundquist Funeral Home in downtown Farmington, (248) 474-5200. Burial will be in the spring, at Evergreen Cemetery in Kalkaska.
      Memorial tributes may be directed to the American Heart Association of Michigan, Dept. 77-3968, Chicago, IL 69678-3968.
     
      GRAND RAPIDS - Bertha Garside Otwell passed away peacefully on Wednesday, March 17, 2004.
      Bertha G. 'Birdie' Otwell was born on May 17, 1914, in Barrie, Ontario, Canada, the daughter of Stephen and Carrie Garside. She grew up in Barrie, and graduated from the Barrie Collegiate Institute and the Barrie Business College. Growing up in Barrie on beautiful Lake Simcoe, Birdie had a very athletic, active childhood. She won trophies in tennis, badminton, ice skating and long-distance swimming.
      In 1941, she joined the Canadian Women's Army Corps, achieving the rank of Corporal. She served two years at Canada House in London, England, during World War II.
      In July of 1943, while on leave in Penzance, Cornwall, she met William Coe Otwell, who was serving in the Royal Canadian Air Force. They married on November 3, 1943, at St. Martin-in-the-Fields Church in London, and enjoyed 60 happy years together.
      Bill and Birdie raised their children in Plymouth. In 1968, they moved to Traverse City, to enjoy the lakes and hills that reminded Birdie of her home in Canada.
      Birdie loved to work in her garden, take long walks in the woods, and spend time on Long Lake with her grandchildren. She will be fondly remembered for her love and devotion to her children and grandchildren.
      Surviving are four children, Helen Louise (John) Woods, William C. 'Skip' (Colette) Otwell Jr., Carol Ann (Dave) Tidwell, and Bob (Laura) Otwell; 11 grandchildren, Carole, Mark, Michael, John, Kristen, Lynn, Robert, Brian, Claire, Annie, and Julia; and two great-grandchildren, Andrew and Aaron.
      Cremation has taken place, and a memorial service will be held for her immediate family.
      In lieu of flowers, contributions may be directed to the Alzheimer's Association of Northwest Michigan, or a charity of your choice.
      Arrangements have been entrusted to Metcalf & Jonkhoff Funeral Service of Grand Rapids.
