GALLEN, Switzerland - Dr. Gabor E. Vazsonyi, formerly of Traverse City, passed away in St. Gallen, Switzerland, on April 2, 2004. He was born in Budapest, Hungary, in 1929. Dr. Vazsonyi's parents, Miklos and Hedwig Vazsonyi-Felsner, and extended family were prominent in Hungarian politics and, as a result, Gabor had to escape to the west in 1956 during the "spring of freedom." He found a new home in Switzerland, where he taught languages and met his wife, Susanna Vazsonyi-Hirt. After visiting his brother, concert pianist Balint Vazsonyi, at Interlochen Arts Academy in 1963, Gabor accepted positions at Northwestern Michigan College and Interlochen, where he taught German and Russian. Based in Northern Michigan but committed to a "global approach" to education, he developed a model study abroad program with ties to Fribourg, Switzerland. Gabor, or 'Gaby,' will be remembered by many former students as a tireless traveler, inspired translator, and warm mentor. Dr. Vazsonyi's career in education was particularly directed toward a global approach to understanding the world. He received his MA from Michigan State University and his Ph.D. in comparative literature from the University of Szeged, in Hungary. In the mid 1970s, he returned to Switzerland to accept the position of Director of the International Children's Village in Trogen. After serving in the mid 1980s as Director of Pathfinder School, in Traverse City, he accepted a faculty position at the University of St. Gallen, where he retired. In recent years, he has split his time between Switzerland and Hungary, as well as visiting friends and family in the United States. Dr. Vazsonyi' s life may be characterized as one of a gifted pedagogue who championed principles of mutual understanding, tolerance, and acceptance. He was devoted to promoting his students' ability to understand and experience their relationship with the surrounding world - the globe - a world that today is more interconnected and interdependent than ever. As well as wife, Susanna, Dr. Vazsonyi is survived by his son Dr. Alexander (Andrea) Vazsonyi, (grandsons, Alexander, Philip, and Marc); son Gabriel Vazsonyi (grandson, Fabio), and daughter Timea Vazsonyi (Thorny Petrik). Susanna Vazsonyi-Hirt resides at the family home in Buhler, Switzerland.
