Obituaries

A memorial service for JOHANNAH M. BAYNTON, 97, of Traverse City, who died Dec. 29, 2003, will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 12, at Central United Methodist Church, with Rev. Tamara Williams officiating. Friends may call from 10 a.m. until the time of the service.
      Memorials may be directed to the Central United Methodist Church.
      Arrangements have been entrusted to Covell Funeral Homes.
     
      Memorial services for FRANCIS R. 'FRANK' DOCKERY JR., of Traverse City, who died on Dec. 17, 2003, will be held at noon on May 17, 2004, at the Traverse City Elks Lodge.
      In remembrance, memorials may be directed to the Athletic Department, in care of Traverse City Area Public Schools, or to Munson Hospice.
      The family was served by the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City.
     
      CLARENCE H. LASCH, 91, of Northport, who died Monday, Feb. 2, 2004, will be remembered at a memorial service at 1 p.m. Friday, May 14, at Trinity Church in Northport.
      Friends may call at the time of the service.
      Memorials may be directed to Trinity Church in Northport, Animal Pet Care at Leelanau Health Center, or to the Salvation Army.
      The family is being served by Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home, Traverse City.
     
      Memorial services for F. GORDON SIMMONS, who died on Jan. 15, 2004, will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, May 15, 2004, at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City, with visitation one hour prior to the services.
     
      CHRISTOPHER and CONNOR STINSON, infant twins sons of Cassandra Stinson of Mancelona, died at the University of Michigan Children's Hospital in Ann Arbor.
      A funeral service will be held at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 11, at the Mancelona Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes. Interment will be in Fairview Cemetery.
     
      LEROY E. WHEELOCK, 92, of Traverse City, died Saturday morning, May 8, 2004, at Munson Medical Center.
      Arrangements will be announced by the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City.
     
      JERRY CLARENCE WILCOX, 91, of Mancelona, died Friday, May 7, 2004, at Kalkaska Memorial Health Center Long Term Care.
      Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, May 12, at the Mancelona Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes. Visitation will take place from noon until the time of the services.
     
      TRAVERSE CITY - George Duane Hingston, 73, of Traverse City, formerly of Mackinaw City, died Saturday, May 8, 2004, at his home after an extended illness.
      He was born in St. Ignace on Feb. 15, 1931, the son of George W. and Helen L. (Moran) Hingston. On Nov. 30, 1957, he married Joyce Stafford in Traverse City.
      Mr. Hingston was a Steward with Great Lakes Freighters, retiring in 1988. He was a member of the Cherryland VFW Post 2780, AML, and the Eagles. George served in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean conflict. He enjoyed cooking, gardening and riding his bike around town, especially to the Farmer's Market. In his earlier years he liked to get out and snowmobile.
      He is survived by his wife, Joyce Hingston of Traverse City; daughter, Sandy Hingston of Traverse City; two sisters, Yvonne Bourrie and Nancy Wilkie of Florida; special nephew, Jeff Hingston of Mackinaw City; niece, Susan Rose of Grant; and many other nieces and nephews.
      He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Michael Duane Hingston; three brothers, Francis, Gilbert and David; and a sister, Irene.
      Visitation will take place Monday, May 10, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Traverse City Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes.
      Graveside funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, May 12, under the auspices of the Cherryland VFW Post 2780, at Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens. Chaplain Ken Thomas will officiate.
      The family asks those wishing to give memorials to please remember Munson Hospice, 1105 Sixth St., Traverse City, MI 49684. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
      Eddy James Knapp
      Died April 19, 2004
      LAKE CITY - Eddy James Knapp, 46, of Lake City, died Monday, April 19, 2004.
      He was preceded in death by his father, Norman Knapp Sr.; and his brother, Brian Knapp.
      He is survived by his mother, Florence Knapp; sons, Eddy (Katie) Knapp Jr. of North East, Penn., and Mitch Knapp of Cedar Springs; grandson, Hunter; brothers, Norman (Valerie) Knapp Jr., Vernon (Bonnie) Knapp and Frank Knapp; several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews; and special friend, Linda Frost.
      No services will be held.
      The family suggests that memorials may be made to the charity of one's choice.

      Died May 7, 2004
      TRAVERSE CITY - Helen Belle Paddock, 82, a longtime resident of Traverse City, died Friday, May 7, 2004, at home.
      Born Sept. 21, 1921, in Markey Township, Roscommon County, she was the daughter of John B. and Ella Viola (Sutherland) Shimel.
      Helen was retired from the Traverse City State Hospital, where she worked for 30 years. She was a member of St. Francis Catholic Church. She received great satisfaction from volunteering with the Gray Lady (nurses), Father Fred, Dr. Surk, and the first March of Dimes Campaign.
      Helen was also active in VFW, the American Military League, and was block captain for the Traverse City Police Department Neighborhood Watch.
      Survivors include her five children, Jerry S. (Phyllis) Luckey of Traverse City, Deanna (Frank) Allers of Big Rapids, James C. Luckey of Williamsburg, Michael F. Luckey of Fort Worth, Texas, and Timothy L. Luckey of Traverse City; a sister, Ann McGowen of Saginaw; three brothers, John Shimel of Traverse City, Keith Shimel of Alabama, and Bryon Shimel of Kentucky; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
      Helen was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers.
      Friends may call at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home today, May 9, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m.
      A funeral service will be celebrated at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral home at 10 a.m. Monday, May 10, with president Richard A. Conley officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery in Manton.
      In remembrance, memorial contributions may be directed to the Father Fred Foundation.
     
      KEWADIN - Robert A. Radtke, 86, of Kewadin, died Thursday, May 6, 2004, at Mercybrook Nursing Home in Rochester Hills after a long illness.
      Robert was born Aug. 28, 1917, above a storefront in Monroe, which is still in existence. The family moved to Detroit early in his life. He attended Central High School in Detroit. His freestyle relay swim team held the record for many years. Classmates at Duke University nicknamed him "Fish" for his love of the water.
      Mr. Radtke sold Cadillacs at the old Detroit branch office, and later owned Radtke Pontiac dealership in Cadillac and Grand Rapids. He later formed R. A. Radtke and Co., and sold shopping carts and store fixtures in the retail store industry.
      Robert's greatest joy was being with his family, and get-togethers at his home on Torch Lake. He would assemble all the grandchildren many times for boat rides to let them dip their toes in "Cold Creek" and see the sunset on Torch Lake.
      Mr. Radtke was a member of the Rotary Club in Elk Rapids and was a longtime member of the Detroit Athletic Club.
      He is survived by his children, Susan Balabuch of Romeo, Karen Stahle of Worthington, Ohio, Robert A. Radtke Jr. of Bloomfield Township, and Bill Radtke of Batavia, Ohio; 11 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
      He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Reid Radtke.
      Visitation will take place today, May 9, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Wm. R. Hamilton Co. Funeral Home, 820 E. Maple, in Birmingham.
      Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, May 10, at the funeral home. The Rev. Dr. Gary R. Glanville, pastor of the First United Methodist Church of Romeo, will officiate. Interment will be private in Lakeville Cemetery, Lakeville.
      Memorial tributes may be directed to The Rotary Club of Elk Rapids.
