Obituaries

CLARA BELLE COATES, 83, died Monday, May 24, 2004, at Munson Medical Center.
      Cremation has taken place. Private family graveside services will be held at a later date at Maple Grove Cemetery in Blair Township.
      The family is being served by The Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home.
     
      JOHN P. "JACK" COYNE, 84, of Traverse City, died on Saturday, May 29, 2004, at the Hospice House in Traverse City.
      Services will be held on Wednesday, June 2, 2004, at 11 a.m., at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City, where friends may call on Tuesday, June 1, 2004, from 5 to 8 p.m.
      A complete obituary will appear in Monday's edition of the Record-Eagle.
     
      SHIRLEY A. DYKSTRA, 64, of Grayling, formerly of Jamestown, died Thursday, May 27, 2004, at home.
      Visitation will be on Monday, May 31, 2004, from 2 to 6 p.m., at the Sorenson Funeral Home in Grayling. A funeral service will take place on Tuesday, June 1, 2004, at 1 p.m., also at the funeral home. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery in Grayling.
      Arrangements are by the Sorenson Funeral Home, McEvers Chapel, in Grayling.
     
      STEPHEN D. FAY, of Interlochen, died Nov. 11, 2003. A gathering to remember his life will be held Saturday, July 3, 2004, beginning at 1 p.m., at his home, 11691 Fredmar Dr., Interlochen. Family and close friends are invited to attend.
      Arrangements are being handled by the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City.
     
      JEAN LAPRATT, 70, of Alba, died Friday, May 28, 2004, at the Otsego Memorial Hospital in Gaylord.
      Visitation will be today, May 30, 2004, from 2 to 4 p.m., and 6 to 8 p.m., at the Mancelona Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes. Funeral services will be held on Monday, May 31, 2004, at 11 a.m., also at the funeral home.
      Arrangements are being handled by the Mortensen Funeral Homes in Mancelona.
     
      ROBERT J. 'ROB' NIELSEN died Feb. 27, 2004.
      A memorial service and a celebration of his life will be held Saturday, June 5, 2004, from 1 to 5 p.m., at Rob's home, 7134 Whispering Hills Drive, Traverse City.
     
      MELVIN EUGENE RUGG, 50, of Brethren, died Friday, May 28, 2004, at West Shore Medical Center in Manistee.
      Visitation will be held today, May 30, 2004, from 6 to 8 p.m., at the Terwilliger Funeral Home in Kaleva. Funeral services will be conducted on Monday, May 31, 2004, also at the funeral home, with the Rev. Floyd Soper officiating. Interment will follow in the Brethren Cemetery.
      Arrangements are by the Terwilliger Funeral Home in Kaleva
     
      JEREMY ROBERT SHAFER JR., infant son of Jeremy R Shafer and Rebecca Jean Reid, died Friday, May 28, 2004, at Munson Medical Center.
      Funeral Services will be held on Friday, June 4, 2004, at the Covell-Smith Funeral Home in Kingsley. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until the time of service. Burial will take place in Evergreen Cemetery in Kingsley.
      Arrangements have been entrusted to the Covell-Smith Funeral Home in Kingsley.
     
      TRAVERSE CITY - Ralf Rossi, 28, our beloved child, we leave you in God's care and peace.
      Ralf graduated from Traverse City High School in 1995, and was a nursing student at NMC.
      To Ralf's friends, there will be a memorial service on June 5, 2004, at 11 a.m., at the Thornapple Valley Church, 1750 S. M-37 Hwy., Hastings.

      ELK RAPIDS - Deloris "Dee" Thomas, 75, of Elk Rapids, died Tuesday, May 25, 2004.
      She was born in Milford on July 27, 1928, the daughter of Jacob and Dora (Bassler) Vandenberg.
      During the last several years Dee had worked in retail at many of the local shops in Elk Rapids.
      Throughout Dee's life her family was her focus, her children and grandchildren. In years past the family had a cabin in the Atlanta/Lewsiton area, where they would gather on weekends.
      Dee enjoyed cooking and baking for her family, as well as others. She was the neighborhood mother to everyone; she filled in and played sandlot baseball when needed, and hosted backyard fish-frys for the neighborhood kids. Her love for animals found her rescuing and nursing many back to health.
      Dee is survived by her loving husband, John Thomas of Elk Rapids; four children, David (Catherine) Thomas of Bradenton, Fla., Matthew (Jenifer) Thomas of Traverse City, Benjamin (Julie) Thomas of Chesapeake, Va., and Jane Thomas of Nakomas, Fla.; five grandchildren, Cameron, Will, Linc, Ali and Rachel Thomas; four sisters, Geraldine Aten, Shirley (Victor) Romero, Alma (Donald) Boesh and Patricia (George) Serbinoff; and many nieces and nephews.
      She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Robert, Jay and Francis; and two sisters, Vida and Phyllis.
      A Celebration of Life service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 1, 2004, at the Elk Rapids United Methodist Church, with Rev. Thomas Pier-Fitzgerald officiating.
      The family asks those wishing to give memorial contributions to please remember the Elk Rapids United Methodist Church, 301 Traverse St., Elk Rapids, MI 49629.
