November 2, 2004ObituariesVERSIE McLEMORE, 53, of Mancelona, died Saturday, Oct. 30, 2004, at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 3, at the Mancelona Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes, with visitation from 10 a.m. until service time. Interment will follow in Fairview Cemetery, Mancelona. IRENE SYMONS, 88, of Bellaire, died Wednesday, Oct. 27, 2004, at the Meadow Brook Medical Care Facility. Memorial services will be held at Meadow Brook, as well as St. Labre Catholic Church in Ashland, Mont. Arrangements were handled by the Bellaire Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes. TRAVERSE CITY - Hazel Lorraine Cox Dickey, 61, of Traverse City, went to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Oct. 29, 2004. She died at home surrounded by her family after a long battle with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease. Born Oct. 26, 1943, at Munson Hospital in Traverse City, Hazel was the daughter of Merritt A. and Hazel Frances (Murphy) Cox. Hazel attended Traverse City public schools. She married Robert L. Dickey Sr. on June 10, 1961, at Central United Methodist Church in Traverse City. Hazel traveled with her Navy husband Robert and two children for 25 years before retiring in 1978. They settled in California for a few years before moving back to Traverse City, where they had lived for the past 15 years. Hazel was a certified home nurse for years, taking care of the elderly. Crocheting, reading, and loving her grandchildren helped fill her days. Hazel's giving heart and cheery disposition in the end will be a treasure she left to those who surrounded her with love. Her unusual sense of humor carried her and her loved ones through to her very last day. Hazel fought a very long fight but won the battle. She is now with Jesus, sleeping in heavenly peace, and will be missed so very much. She is survived by her husband of 42 years, Robert L. Dickey Sr.; two children, Robert (Kerri) Dickey Jr. of Honor and Monica (Charles) Nagel of Grand Blanc; her mother, Hazel Cox of Traverse City; three sisters, Eloise Crouch of Traverse City, Coraline (Don) Reid of Arizona and Donna Cox of Traverse City; her brother, Merritt Cox; her loving friend, Richard Harrington of Harrison; seven grandchildren, Cynthia, Christina, Marie, Robbie, Jacob, Emily and Riley; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her father, Merritt A. Cox; and her sisters, Elise Hunt, Merrilyn Hilton and Merry Cox. Graveside services for family and friends will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 4, in Oakwood Cemetery, Traverse City, with Pastor Joe Kelly officiating. Memorial donations may be directed to Munson Hospice. Arrangements are being handled by Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home, Traverse City. TRAVERSE CITY - Russell Elenbaas, 78, of Traverse City, died Wednesday, Oct. 27, 2004. He was born March 28, 1926, in Lucas. Russell was a retired printer, having worked with the Traverse City Record-Eagle for many years. Afterwards, he was locally well-known as the "Pumpkin Farmer." In his youth, Russell served in the U.S. Army during World War II, in France. Russell is survived by his three daughters, Gloria Mack of Cape Coral, Fla., Janet Elenbaas of The Colony, Texas, and Kathy Russell of Traverse City; two sisters, Doris Swanson of Farwell and Marion Longstreet of Manton; a brother, Ronald Elenbaas of Traverse City; his former wife, JoAnn Denman of Cadillac; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three sons, Russell, Steven and Charles. A memorial service and burial will be held in Lucas during the spring, at date to be announced. Memorials may be given in memory of Russell to the Women's Resource Center of Traverse City. Arrangements were made by the Martinson Funeral Home of Suttons Bay. FIFE LAKE - Robert Gallatin, 70, of Fife Lake, passed away on Saturday, Oct. 30, 2004, at his home. Born on July 26, 1934, in Dearborn, he was the son of William and Liddy (Warner) Gallatin. Robert married Rose Ann Mathers on Dec. 19, 1953, in China Twp. They were residents of Fife Lake since 1972, moving from New Haven. Robert was self-employed as a contractor and had a reforestation and landscaping business. He was a member and director of Grand Traverse Area Whitetails; an elder and trustee of St. Paul Lutheran Church; board member of Forest Area Federal Credit Union and board member of the Michigan Credit Union League of the Paul Bunyan Chapter. Robert enjoyed deer hunting, fishing, and working with his son, Richard, in the business. Robert is survived by his wife of 50 years, Rose; his son, Richard (Barbara) Gallatin of Fife Lake; and his brothers, Donald (Mary) Gallatin and Ralph (Annette) Gallatin, all of Fife Lake. Robert was preceded in death by his parents. The funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. today, Nov. 2, at St. Paul Lutheran Church with Rev. Ted Turanski officiating. Interment will be at Boardman Township Cemetery. Arrangements were made by Wolfe Funeral Home. TRAVERSE CITY - Otto A. Gross, 88, of Traverse City, passed away Monday, Nov. 1, 2004. He was with his family in his final hours. Otto was born Feb. 10, 1916, in Sheboygan, Wis., to Christ and Catherine Gross. The family moved to Saginaw, where Otto graduated from Arthur Hill High School. He married Doris Goutremout on July 8, 1942. They made their home in Saginaw until 1974 when they moved to Torch Lake, and later to Traverse City. Otto served in World War II from 1942-45. He worked for General Motors for 38 years. Otto belonged to the Veterans of Foreign Wars and was a life member of the Elks Club. He loved playing cards, fishing and having family around. Otto is survived by his wife, Doris; two daughters, Marlene (Jim) McArthur of Lake Shore, Minn., and Sandy (George) Osterloh of Torch Lake; grandchildren, Piper (Kevin) Gills of Traverse City, Eric Horzelski of Green Acres, Fla., Kevin Knodel of Shakopee, Minn., and Sarah Puroll of Traverse City; great-grandchildren, Jared and Michael Gills and Megan and Dylan Puroll; his sister, Marie McGill; and a sister-in-law, Donna Silvia. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Chris; and a grandson, Gregg. Visitation will take place from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 3, at the Reitz-Herzberg Funeral Home, 1550 Midland Rd., in Saginaw. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 4, at the funeral home, with visitation one hour prior to the service. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association. KINGSLEY - Erma Hurley, 46, of Mesick, passed away Saturday, Oct. 30, 2004, at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City. Erma was born Feb. 24, 1958, at Bolling Air Force Base in Washington, D.C., to Larry and Sharon (Baldwin) Satterlee. She married Robert Hurley on June 15, 1984, in Mesick. Erma was an active member of AMVETS Post #120. She enjoyed crocheting and travel. Erma is survived by her mother and her husband; two daughters, Audrey Lynn (Nick) Ensley and Bobbie Sue Hurley, both of Grand Rapids; three grandchildren, Alex, Alyssa and Ethan Ensley; a sister, Ruth Case of Springport; and three brothers, Scott Satterlee of Carleton, Brian Satterlee of Mason and Steve Satterlee of Eaton Rapids. Erma was preceded in death by her father, Larry Satterlee; and a son, Richard Dean. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 3, at the Covell-Smith Funeral Home in Kingsley. Memorial contributions may be directed to the American Lung Association. CEDAR - Theodore H. Schlueter, 94, of Cedar, passed away Monday, Nov. 1, 2004. He was born Sept. 30, 1910, in Centerville Township, Leelanau County. Theodore married Pearle I. Gilbert on Dec. 25, 1936, in Arcadia. As a young man, Theodore worked on the Ann Arbor car ferry out of Frankfort. He attended high school in Leland, and graduated from Ferris State University. He received his master's degree from the University of Michigan. Theodore taught high school for 37 years, retiring from the Kaleva-Norman-Dickson school district. He also owned and operated Schlueter Fruit Farms with his son, John. Theodore is survived by his wife of 68 years, Pearle Schlueter; daughters, Teddy (Larry) Page and Deborah (Dr. Fred) Lawrence; son, John (Denise) Schlueter; grandchildren, Michael (Toni) Page, Kathy, Debbie, and Freddy Lawrence, and Johanna and Jason Schlueter; and two sisters, Millie Martinson and Ida Dempsey. He was preceded in death by his parents, John Henry and Rose Schlueter; a sister, Tillie Snohr; and a grandson, Lon Page. Visitation will take place this evening, Nov. 2, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Martinson Funeral Home in Suttons Bay. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 3, at St. Paul Lutheran Church of Good Harbor, with visitation one hour prior to the service. Rev. Robert Wurst will officiate. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Paul Lutheran Church of Good Harbor. TRAVERSE CITY - Curtis L. Snider, 84, of Traverse City, who was born Sept. 7, 1920, passed away Sunday, Oct. 31, 2004, in Traverse City. Curtis served his country during World War II with the 8th Air Force, 379th Bomb Group, and successfully flew 32 missions. Curtis retired from Sears Roebuck and Company following 31 years of service in various managerial roles. He was highly involved in the formation of the United Church of Christ and had been an active member at the First Congregational Church in Traverse City. Curtis was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 59 years, Elaine D. Snider. Survivors include sons, Gregory K. (Carolyn) and Christopher J. (Jean); grand-children, Jaime (Tammy) and Kimberly; and great-grandchildren, Sean, Joshua and Ethan. Curt loved fly-fishing, music, nature, golf, his family, and his wide circle of friends. Memorial services are being planned and will be held at a later date at the First Congregational Church in Traverse City. Arrangements are being made by Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home. NORTHPORT - Victor "Poppy" Vincent Stillin, 84, of Northport, died Sunday, Oct. 31, 2004. He was born May 16, 1920, in Ahmeek. Poppy was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He was extremely devoted to his family and truly loved his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He enjoyed watching NASCAR (#6!) and gardening. Poppy was a truly loyal Ford employee where he retired as an experimental technician. Victor is survived by his wife of 60 years, Maureen (O'Kelly); three children, Daniel of Clarkston, Denis (Debi) and Terry (Patti) Stillin, both of Northport; three sisters, Sarah Casteluzzo, Anna Kempal and Agnes Harry; a brother, Alex Stillin; 11 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his son, Robert; two sisters, Mary Stillin and Stephanie Justin; and a brother, William. Visitation will take place this evening, Nov. 2, from 4 to 9 p.m., with a vigil service at 7:30 p.m., at the Martinson Funeral Home. A Mass will be held at the Kateri Tekakwitha Catholic Church in Peshawbestown on Wednesday, Nov. 3, at 11 a.m., with burial following in the Leelanau Township Cemetery in Northport. The Reverend Andrew G. Buvala with officiate. Memorials may be given to the St. Mary's Catholic School, the Father Fred Foundation or Mass Intentions. Tobin Sr., 84, of Maple City, died surrounded by his loving family on Sunday, Oct. 31, 2004, at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City. He was born Sept. 17, 1920, in Maple City, the son of Phillip and Nellie Mae (Westcott) Tobin. On May 26, 1962, in Grand Rapids, he married the former Beverly Jean Harig. Frank retired from Pridgeon and Clay Machine Shop in 1975. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and shuffleboard. Frank was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army; he received a Purple Heart and a Silver Star. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Empire. Frank is survived by his wife of 42 years, Beverly Tobin of Maple City; three daughters, Dayia Tobin of Colorado, Cynthia (Mark) Empire of Grand Rapids and Linda (John) Biek of Wyoming, Mich.; six sons, Frank (Gayle Egeler) Tobin Jr. of Maple City, Tim (Becky Crowley) Tobin of Wyoming, Mich., Brian (Charlene) Tobin of Maple City, Shannon (Cyndi Schopieray) Tobin of Hesperia, Allen (Donna) Workman of Grandville and Don Heinrich of Michigan; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; a brother, Phillip (Isabelle) Tobin of Grand Rapids; a sister, Marge Yararis of New York; his mother-in-law, Marion Harig of Freeport; a brother-in-law, Earl (Sharon) Harig of Freeport; and two sisters-in-law, Joan (John) Hoelsema of Grandville and Carol (Ed) Smith of Florida. He was preceded in death by his parents and three sisters, Ethel Whitten, Nellie Drew and Jessie Wepking. Visitation will take place today, Nov. 2, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Traverse City Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 3, at the funeral home, with additional visitation from 11 a.m. until service time. Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery in Empire.
