November 7, 2004ObituariesMARGARET MARTLOCK FISTLER EARNEST, 91, of Traverse City, passed away Thursday, Nov. 4, 2004, at the Pavilions in Traverse City. Private family services will be held at a later date. The family is being served by the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City. ANNE MILDRED PATCHEN, 100, of Acme, died Friday, Nov. 5, 2004, at Grand Traverse Pavilions. Funeral services will be held next week at the Elmwood Funeral Chapel in Chicago, Ill. Local arrangements were handled by the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City. HENRY CHARLES SCHNEIDWIND, 90, of Omena, passed away at his residence on Friday, Nov. 5, 2004. Arrangements are pending with the Martinson Funeral Home of Suttons Bay. EAST JORDAN - Clare Louise Wade Brown, of East Jordan and Florence, Ariz., passed on to be with the Lord on Friday, Nov. 5, 2004. She passed over at Munson Hospice House while holding the hand of her loved one . Born Nov. 3, 1920, on the first Election Day that women had the right to vote, Clare grew to be a pioneer for women's education and rights throughout her life. She graduated from East Jordan High School, where her father was superintendent of schools. She completed her studies at Michigan State University, with a teaching degree in home economics and a master's degree in nutrition. Her first teaching assignment was in Gila Bend, Ariz. She returned to East Jordan and taught high school from 1948 to 1953, when she received a Ford Foundation fellowship and studied fine art at Cranbrooke Institute of Art, completing her master's in weaving. Before becoming Charlevoix County's Home Extension Agent, 1956 to 1965, she taught home economics at Central Michigan University. Many people benefited from the knowledge she so freely shared in extension classes, 4-H Clubs, radio, television programs and newsletters throughout her career. In 1965, she became the home extension agent for Clare-Gladwin County, and eventually for Isabella County, until her retirement when she became a "snowbird," spending winters in Florence Gardens, Ariz. Among her many professional honors, she was listed three times in Who's Who of American Women for her home economics work with Native American women. She sat on the national board of the Alzheimer's Association, and most recently held office in the National Association of Retired Federal Employees in Coolidge, Ariz. Clare was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in East Jordan, and was affiliated with Church of the Master, Presbyterian in Mesa, Ariz. and the Crystal Cathedral in Garden Grove, Calif. Clare leaves behind her dearest friend and companion, Douglas Bennett and his wonderful family; children, Marcella (Ralph W.) Brown Sweet of Taos, N.M. and Thomas (Kathie Majors) Wade Brown of Charlevoix; stepson, Robert (Sue) Lyle Jr. of Westlake Village, Calif.; grandchildren, Dustin and Alena Sweet and Carrie and Rob Lyle; sister, Barbara Crick Wade of Waterford; cousin, Alice McCutchan Beeker of Traverse City; beloved nieces and nephews, Diana (Rick) Wade Morgan, Lynda (Randy) Wade Smith, David Dean (Debbie) Wade, Kenneth Scott (Sharon) Wade, and all their beautiful children who brought such joy to her life. She was preceded in death by her parents, Lorene Pass Wade and Ernest E. Wade; brother, David Scott Wade; and second husband, Robert Lyle Sr. Clare is lovingly remembered for her courage, humor, kindness and generous spirit. She will be deeply missed by all of us. Funeral services will be held Monday, Nov. 8, 2004, at 12 noon, at the First Presbyterian Church in East Jordan, where friends may begin to call at 10 a.m. Internment will follow, at 2 p.m., in the Sunset Hill Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the National Alzheimer's Association, Munson Hospice or the charity of one's choice. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to the Covell Funeral Home in Traverse City. TRAVERSE CITY - Anna Lynn Maas, 10, of Traverse City, died Thursday, Nov. 4, 2004, at DeVos Children's Hospital in Grand Rapids, as the result of an auto accident in Traverse City on Wednesday. Anna was born, in Traverse City, on Dec. 14, 1993, the daughter of Karen Lynn and Stephen Joseph Maas. She was a fifth grade student at the Montessori Children's House and Elementary School. A very creative person, Anna loved to draw and paint. She also loved to dance, play softball and run cross country, and will always be remembered for her very independent spirit. She was her sister's best friend and her brother's number one fan. Through the Gift of Life program, Anna's zest for life will continue through others. Anna is survived by her parents, Karen and Steve; brother, Jacob Allen McCall; sister, Kate Isabel Maas; grandparents, Jane Maas of Traverse City and Carolyn and Kenneth Jeffery of Cedar; great-grandparents, Martha Green of Maple City, Amelia Jeffery of Northport and Lillian Maas of St. Clair; aunts, uncles and cousins, Aunt Laura and Uncle Tim Chipman and cousins, Benjamin, Harrison, Nicole, Rachel, Jessie and Justine Chipman; Aunt Amy and Uncle Marty Mack; Uncle Jim Jeffery and very special friend, Becky Saxton; Uncle Mike and Aunt Jodi Maas and cousins, Jordan and Tyler Maas; and a very special cousin, Thea Rose Senger; along with many, many more loving relatives and friends. Anna was preceded in death by her grandpa, Joseph Maas; great-grandparents, Millard Green, John Ronald Jeffery and Verma and Clifford Swartz. Visitation will take place at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home today, Nov. 7, 2004, from 1 to 3 p.m. and 5 to 7 p.m. Services celebrating Anna's life will be held at 4 p.m., Monday, Nov. 8, 2004, also at the funeral home, with the Rev. Dr. Gary Hogue officiating. The family suggests that Anna be remembered through a memorial contribution to a scholarship fund in Anna's name at the Montessori Children's House and Elementary School or through a fund established at the Traverse City State Bank, PO Box 192, Traverse City, MI 49685. FIFE LAKE - On Friday, Nov. 5, 2004, Pauline Rose Stettler passed away peacefully at her home. A Fife Lake resident since 1946, she retired from Kroupa's Inc. of Traverse City, following 30 years of service. Pauline was a headstrong woman who freely shared of herself with others. She enjoyed traveling, and her hobby was making rag loomed rugs. Her greatest joy came from her many grandchildren, each one having a special place in her heart. She is survived by her nine children, Geraldine (David) See of Grand Rapids, Delbert (Marilee) Buchner of South Bend, Ind., Michael (Loretta) Buchner of Rapid City, Beth Ann (Bob) Cummer of Fife Lake, Delores Buchner of Grand Rapids, Rose (Dan) Burwell of Fife Lake, Kathy (Doug) Buchner of Manton, Christine (Dan) Walsworth of Muskegon and Janet (Jim) Lydick of Lake City; 30 grandchildren; 49 great-grandchildren; siblings, Wenona Cummer of Fife Lake, Grace Potter of Hasting, Harold Symonds of Fife Lake, Edna VanSplinter of Charlotte, Harry Symonds of Grand Rapids and Donna Pearson of Fife Lake; and many nieces and nephews. Pauline was preceded in death by Delbert Buchner, her first husband; Thomas Stettler, her second husband; grandchildren, Jeremy Lydick, Michael Penny, Tamara See, Amanda Hine and Michael Finch; and her sister, Hellen Leatherwood. A memorial service will be held on Monday, Nov. 8, 2004, at 1 p.m., at the Wolfe Funeral Home in Kalkaska, with visitation one hour prior to the service. The Rev. Robert Stark of the Kalkaska United Methodist Church will officiate. Inurnment will be at the Clark Cemetery. Memorials may be given, on behalf of Pauline, to the American Diabetes Association. Arrangements were made by the Wolfe Funeral Home.
