INTERLOCHEN - Angeline Catherine Reid, 98, a resident of Royal Oak for 60 years, died Monday, Nov. 8, 2004, in Interlochen, at the home of her daughter, Beverly McCann, after living there for the past two years.
Born March 28, 1906, in Manistique, Angie was a determined and vibrant young woman who loved the outdoors and dancing. Due to the deaths of her mother when she was 6, and her older sister two years later, when her grandmother died, Angie, at age 14, took charge of the household of her father and five brothers.
In 1926, Angie married Stanley Reid, also of Manistique, in Detroit. The couple returned to their home town during the Great Depression. During the early 1930s, as she cared for her young sons, Jack and Bob, and her baby daughter, Beverly, in primitive quarters, Angie presided over the first concession stand beside the deep, emerald waters of the "Big Spring," Kitch-iti-kipi, one of the Upper Peninsula's outstanding natural attractions.
As a volunteer during World War II, she stood by the Manistique post office, sharing in shifts of watchers that scanned the sky for possible aerial attack on the Soo Locks.
Moving near Detroit, in 1942, she did factory war work. Later, she set diamonds in tools for the Service Diamond Tool Company in Ferndale. In her late 60s, she retired from the Sydney Crandle Company in Royal Oak. Finally, Angie was free to read, watch the Tigers and U of M games on TV, crochet colorful afghans, and play royal rummy at her kitchen table with a steady stream of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Angie is remembered for her self-reliance, indomitable spirit, humor and generosity. During the Depression, no hobo was ever turned away, but was offered a place with the family at dinner; throughout her life, no child lacked for attention or respect in her presence. A formidable opponent at cards, a font of family stories, Angie inspired friendship and cheer wherever she went. Her character and her care made her a role model for five generations. She never ran out of hope, and her cookie jar never ran out of gingersnaps.
Surviving are sons, Roger John Reid and his wife, Mary Morrison Reid, and Dr. Robert Edwin Reid and his wife, Nancy Pitkin Reid; daughter, Beverly McCann and husband, Hugh Wray McCann; 11 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
Angie was preceded in death by her husband, Stanley Reid; her father and mother, Stephen and Catherine Torbik Barnes; her sister, Mary; and brothers, Steve, Emery, Jacob, Alexander and John Barnes.
All the generations of Angie's family are grateful for her many and well-lived days, and will carry her memory with love and pride.
A memorial service and burial in Fairview Cemetery in Manistique will be held at a future date.
Donations may be made to the Beaumont Foundation, 3601 W. 13 Mile Road, Royal Oak, MI 48073; Saint Frances School, 210 Lake St., Manistique, MI, 49854; or Munson Hospice, 550 Munson Ave., Traverse City, MI 49684.
