November 13, 2004ObituariesARTHUR L. GREEN JR., 69, of Wellston, died Sunday, Nov. 7, 2004, at Paul Oliver Hospital Long Term Care.Services have been held. Arrangements were by the Benzonia Chapel of McElduff Funeral Home and Cremation Service. ROBERT G. JOHNSON, 79, of Traverse City, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 10, 2004, at Munson Medical Center. A complete obituary will appear in Sunday's edition of the Record-Eagle. The family is being served by the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City. TRAVERSE CITY - Graham J. Terry, 92, of Traverse City, formerly of Almont, passed away Thursday, Nov. 11, 2004, at Crittenton Hospital in Rochester Hills. He was born July 21, 1912, in Dryden, the son of Graham and Iva Rae (Lockwood) Terry. He graduated from Almont High School, where he played football, basketball, tennis and hockey, and held records in the high jump, pole vault and hurdles. He went on to graduate from Michigan State University with a degree in chemistry, and played in the MSU marching band. He married Martha Jean King, in Almont, on Sept. 9, 1934, and together they owned and operated Terry's Meat & Groceries in Almont for over 30 years. Mr. Terry served on the school board, was a member of the First Congregational Church in Almont, the Country Cuzzins of Romeo, the Masonic Order and the Audubon Society. He was a mentor to reading in the HOSTS program in Texas for over 30 years. In his later years, he enjoyed square dancing, wood carving, golf, and was an avid fisherman. He is survived by four children, Audrey (Bruce) Dodson of Calif., Thomas Terry of Boulder, Colo., Phyllis (Fred) Hartman of Kawkawlin and Beth (Larry) Flynn of Almont. He was a proud and loving grandfather of 14 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren. Also surviving are niece and nephew, Richard (Jean) Hart of Georgia and Donna Hart of California; and two cousins. Visitation will be held Sunday, Nov. 14, 2004, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 9 p.m., at the Muir Brothers Funeral Home in Almont. Funeral services will be Monday, Nov. 15, 2004, at 2 p.m., also at the funeral home, with Dean Hough officiating. Burial will be made in the Scotch Settlement Cemetery. Memorials may be made for books to the Almont Community Schools or The Henry Stephens Memorial Library. BEAR LAKE - Clare Eugene Putney Sr., 78, of Bear Lake, died Thursday, Nov. 11, 2004, in Lake Ann, surrounded by his family. He was born Sept. 2, 1926, in Pleasanton Township, the son of Ellis and Charlotte (Robbins) Putney. Clare was a veteran of World War II, serving in the US Navy on the USS Monterey. He had also served in the Merchant Marines. He was a member of the VFW and the American Legion Post #221 in Frankfort. Clare had worked on the Ann Arbor car ferry for 20 years. In his spare time, Clare enjoyed reading, hunting and traveling. Clare is survived by seven children, Clare Putney Jr. of Traverse City, Rosemary (Robert) Prance of Lake Ann, Christina Putney of Cathlamet, Wash., Fredrick (Gayle) Putney of Schoolcraft, George Putney of Grand Haven, Carol Bredbanner of Bear Lake and Barbara (Glen) Kibby of Elberta; 18 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; his aunt, Dorothy Herman of Elberta; and numerous nieces and nephews. Clare was preceded in death by his wife, Anna Lucille Putney in 1980; two children, Thomas Putney and John Putney; one sister, Arlene Smith; and two brothers, Curtis Putney and Leroy Putney. Visitation will be held Sunday, Nov. 14, 2004, from 6 to 8 p.m., at the Bennett-Barz Funeral Home in Beulah. Funeral services will be conducted Monday, Nov. 15, 2004, at 1 p.m., at Trinity Lutheran Church in Frankfort, with the Rev. Rick Stieve officiating. Interment will follow in Blaine Township Cemetery. HONOR - Joy Emily Bailey, 68, of Honor, died Thursday, Nov. 11, 2004, at Munson Medical Center. She was born Feb. 25, 1936, in Manistique, the daughter of James and Clara (Labadie) Moore. Joy had worked as a cook at area restaurants, and in her spare time, she enjoyed working in her flower gardens. She loved Elvis and recently made a trip to Graceland. Her greatest love was spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. On Jan. 16, 1971, in Bendon, Joy married Russell Bailey, who survives her. She is also survived by seven children, Debra (Robert) Reed of Benzonia, Sandra Kerby of Honor, Richard (Bobbi) Fast Jr. of Honor, Vicki (Robert Forrester) Fast of Midland, Jeanne (Buzz) Harris of Honor, Glenn Fast of Honor and Russell E. Bailey Jr. of Honor; her grandchildren, Tim, Denis, Jeanett, Bubby, Rob, Randy, Rachel, Ricky, Curty, Jenne, Jeanne, Danny, Chuck, Mandy, Scott, Bobbie and Meg; 22 great-grandchildren; her brother, Leo (Nellie) Moore of Alaska; two sisters, Shirley (Otto) Edinger of Beulah and Gail (Art) Hunt of Arcadia; and numerous nieces and nephews. Joy was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Randall J. Fast; a granddaughter, Kristen Marie Harris; three brothers, Niles, Don and Phillip Moore; and two sisters, Joyce Moore and Evelyn Smith. Visitation will be held today, Nov. 13, 2004, from 6 to 8 p.m., at the Bennett-Barz Funeral Home in Beulah. Funeral services will be conducted Sunday, Nov. 14, 2004, at 1 p.m., also at the funeral home, with Fr. Ray Cotter officiating. Interment will be in the Platte Township Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Joy Bailey Family Fund. Envelopes are available at the Bennett-Barz Funeral Home. WILLIAMSBURG - Elfrida B. Finch, 79, of Williamsburg, died Thursday, Nov. 11, 2004, at Bortz Health Care, surrounded by her loving family. She was born on Jan. 8, 1925, in Big Rapids, the daughter of Albert and Esther (Hollenbeck) Cole. On March 4, 1944, in Coffeyville, Kan., she married Bernard E. Finch, who preceded her in death on May 13, 2004. Elfrida retired from the Coloma Public Schools as a cook. She attended the Williamsburg United Methodist Church and was a member of the Coloma Ladies Lions Club. She enjoyed painting, playing the organ, sewing, knitting, crafts and arranging flowers. She truly loved her family, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Elfrida is survived by three sons, Bernard James (Mary) Finch of Coloma, Thomas (Linda) Finch of Williamsburg and Timothy (Rebecca) Finch of Mancelona; 10 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; seven brothers, three sisters; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; and her husband, Bernard in 2004. A memorial service will be held on Friday, Nov. 19, 2004, at the Williamsburg United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Doug Pedersen officiating. Burial will take place in the Conway Cemetery in Arcadia. Memorials may be given to the Williamsburg United Methodist Church. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Covell Funeral Home in Traverse City. TRAVERSE CITY - Dorothy Ann Campbell Piper, 77, of Traverse City died Thursday Nov. 11, 2004, at Munson Hospice House. Born March 3, 1927, in Baraboo, Wis., she was the daughter of Clifford W. and Ruth Ann (Miller) Campbell. Formerly of Baraboo, Wis., Frankenmuth and Madison, Wis., she had been a resident of Traverse City for the past year and a half. Dorothy Ann had a 42-year career in banking, and retired as assistant vice president. Survivors include daughter, Becky (Michael) Griffin of Traverse City; brother, Robert (Mary Louise) Vernon of Baraboo; and two granddaughters, Jennifer Ann and Kimberly Lynn Griffin, also of Traverse City. Services will be held Saturday, Nov. 20, 2004, at 12 p.m., at the Rago Funeral Home in Baraboo. Friends may call from 10 a.m. until the time of service. Burial will take place in the Walnut Hill Cemetery in Baraboo. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to either the Grand Traverse Pavilions Foundation, Munson Hospice House, or the Campbell Park Fund, c/o the city of Baraboo. Arrangements are being made by Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home. ELK RAPIDS - Edith Elizabeth Zagar, 81, of Elk Rapids, died Wednesday, Nov. 10, 2004, at Tendercare of Traverse City. She was born, in Hancock, Jan. 19, 1923, the daughter of Emil and Rose (Posti) Kemppainen. Edith graduated from Hancock High School, in 1941, as valedictorian. On March 20, 1948, in Hancock, she married George M. Zagar, who survives. She retired from Edwards Brothers Printing in Ann Arbor, where she worked in the lithograph department. Edith sang in the choir and was a strong member in the Lutheran Church. She enjoyed cooking, along with reading in her spare time. She is survived by her husband, George; two daughters, Mrs. Christine (Rodney) Hosman and Mrs. Marilyn (Jay) King; three grandchildren, Kristopher King, Carrie Hosman and Marcus Hosman. She was preceded in death by four brothers. Cremation has taken place. Memorial services will be held today, Nov. 13, 2004, at 1 p.m., at the Covell Funeral Home in Elk Rapids, with the Rev. David Mellor officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Covell Funeral Home in Elk Rapids. ENFIELD, Conn. - Dorothy M. Matus, 83, of Enfield, Conn., died Sunday, Oct. 17, 2004, at the Parkview Specialty Hospital in Springfield, Mass. She was born, in Michigan City, Ind., the daughter of the late Solomon and Gertrude Coppens of Empire. She was the beloved wife of the late Edmund Matus, residing in Enfield for 50 years. Dorothy attended the Empire schools until her senior year of high school. She graduated from Hillsdale High School in Illinois and the Mary Thompson Children's Hospital for Women and Children in Chicago. She was a nurse in the Army Air Corps, serving in the United States and England. She was a nurse for several doctors for many years. Dorothy was a loving, giving wife, mother, grandmother, friend and neighbor. She loved music, all creatures great and small, and was an avid fan of the UCONN women's basketball team. She will be greatly missed by all who benefited from her compassion, kindness and delightful sense of humor. Her courage in the face of failing health inspired all around her. She is survived by two sons, James Matus of Hartford, Conn. and Edward Matus of Enfield, Conn.; a grandson, Samuel Matus of Enfield, Conn.; two brothers, John Coppens of Charlevoix and James Coppens of Crystal River, Fla.; two sisters, Alice (Vance) Diggins of Empire and Barbara (George) Vogel of Suttons Bay. She was predeceased by a brother, Robert Coppens. A celebration of her life was celebrated at St. Bernard's Church. She was buried with military honors in St. Bernard's Cemetery.
