Visitation will be Friday, Nov. 19, 2004, from 5 to 9 p.m., at the Wolfe Funeral Home in Kalkaska. Funeral services will be held Saturday, Nov. 20, 2004, at 11 a.m., also at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Lodi Cemetery. Arrangements are by the Wolfe Funeral Home in Kalkaska. DONALD STEWART DUNKLOW, 67, of Lake Leelanau, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 17, 2004, at his home. Arrangements are pending with the Martinson Funeral Home in Suttons Bay. LOUISE C. GREENAWAY, 94, of Manistee, died Tuesday, Nov. 16, 2004, at West Shore Medical Center in Manistee. A memorial Mass from the Order of Christian Funerals will be celebrated Saturday, Nov. 20, 2004, at 11 a.m., at Guardian Angels Catholic Church in Manistee, where the family will receive friends one hour prior to the Mass. The family is being served by the Johnson Funeral Home in Manistee. The funeral mass for MARIA G. KLUR will be held Friday, Nov. 19, 2004, at 11 a.m., at Christ the King Catholic Church in Acme. Visitation will take place today, Nov. 18, 2004, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m., at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home, with a wake service at 7:30 p.m. A memorial service for KYRIAKI MELONAS, a resident of Traverse City who died in Chania, Crete, Greece, on Oct. 12, 2004, will be held on Saturday, Nov. 20, 2004, at 11 a.m., at the Grace Episcopal Church, following regular Eastern Orthodox worship services. Memorials may be directed to the Father Fred Foundation or the Eastern Orthodox Church (Mission) of Traverse City. KENNETH MICHAEL POWERS, 47, of Kaleva, died Tuesday, Nov. 16, 2004. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, Nov. 20, 2004, at 2 p.m., at the Terwilliger Funeral Home in Kaleva, with visitation from 12 p.m. until the time of service. Fr. Richard Kosterman will officiate. Interment will be in the St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery in Onekama. TRAVERSE CITY - Geraldine L. Cowell died Sunday, Nov. 14, 2004, at her home, four days before her 97th birthday. She was born, in McBain, Nov. 18, 1907, the daughter of Glenn and Ethelyn (Paine) Porter. On June 15, 1929, she was married to Wayne Cowell of Coldwater. He preceded her in death in 1981. Geraldine attended the University of Michigan, where she studied interior design. Her art interest continued throughout her life. Geraldine was talented in several areas, including painting in oil, watercolor and pastels, construction of miniature rooms, and designing copper enamel and silver jewelry. Her most recognized piece is the "Indian's Michigan," a map of the original trails throughout the state. Geraldine was a loyal member of the Friendly Garden Club, and at her death, was the oldest living member, having served the club for over 45 years. In addition to her love of art and flower design, she enjoyed playing the organ and singing, never missing an opportunity to learn something new. She is survived by two daughters, Suzanne (Arthur) Schubert of Traverse City and Joan (Loren ) Bensley of Omena; eight grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren. Geraldine will be remembered by her family and friends as a gracious lady and a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Visitation will be Friday, Nov. 19, 2004, from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City. Services will be Saturday, Nov. 20, 2004, at 1 p.m., at Central Methodist Church, 222 Cass St., with visitation one hour prior to the service. The Rev. Tamara Williams will officiate. GRAND RAPIDS - Kenneth Emery Haverkate Sr. was born on July 18, 1931, in Muskegon, and died on Nov. 5, 2004, in Grand Rapids. Ken was a longtime resident of northern Michigan and Lake Placid, Fla. He was a veteran of the Korean War, and served the United States in the Navy aboard the aircraft carrier Lake Champlain. For over 25 years, Ken was a Teamster and drove a fuel tanker for Wagoner Transportation Company of Muskegon. Ken was active in the Mackinaw City Lions Club, and was a member of the American Legion of Lake Placid. Ken was preceded in death by his wife, Bonnie L. (Lyons) Haverkate; a sister, Betty Ann Fuller; and brothers-in-law, Victor Fuller and Frank Warrick. He is survived by his children, Debra Miesch of Sebastian, Fla., Lori Herbig of Kentwood, Karen of Redmond, Wash., Kenneth Jr. (Shelley) of Grandville, Kelly Buth (Eric) of Ada, and Kathryn of Grand Rapids; step-children, Roy and Mary (Minelli) Paitsel of Chester, Va., Tom and Nancy (Minelli) LaVeque of Cheboygan, John A. Minelli of Frankfort, Tom and Michelle (Minelli) Brege of Rogers City, Terry and Therese (Minelli) Mason of Suttons Bay, Thaddeus and Joanne (Minelli) Niedzwiecki of Traverse City, and Gary and Lori (Minelli) Florip of Lake Ann. Ken is also survived by 34 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Also surviving Ken are his siblings, Robert (Joan) Haverkate of Alva, Fla., Natalie Warrick of Crystal River, Fla., Alice (Richard) VanderLaan of Sebring, Fla., and Carol (Jack) Tikala of Sarasota, Fla.; special cousins, Mary Riemersma of Novi and Garry Riemersma of Apopaka, Fla.; and many nieces and nephews. At Ken's wishes, cremation has taken place. Friends may join the family for interment at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 20, at St. Francis Xavier Cemetery in Petoskey. GLEN ARBOR - Francis Elizabeth "Tan" Hawley, 91, of Empire, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Monday morning, Nov. 15, 2004, at her son's home. She was born on the family farm in North Gage, N.Y., on July 5, 1913. Tan was the daughter of Earl and Harriet (Bullock) Jones. She married Chester L. Hawley on Feb. 20, 1936, in Albany, N.Y. Tan graduated from New York State Teachers College in 1931, and taught 4th and 5th grade for the next 35 years. A master teacher, she was a mentor to countless student teachers. Francis was a devoted daughter, wife, mother and grandmother who will be remembered for her selfless devotion to others. Always thinking of others and never herself, she departs this world with an enormous store of love from all who were privileged to know her. Tan was a lifelong reader and passed her love of books on to her children and grandchildren. She loved anything that grew, especially spring wild flowers. Never without a feline companion, Tan was comforted over the last several years by her faithful friend, Little Lady. She is survived by her children, Bob and Joan of Glen Arbor, and Dick and Mary Ellen of Newport News, Va.; two sisters, Majorie Puckett and Ardith Thompson; five grandchildren, Lisa (Sam) Siddall of Empire, Darren (Meghan) Hawley of Cedar, Robert (Jennifer) Hawley of Traverse City, Chris Hawley of Atlanta, Ga. and Rich Hawley of Newport News, Va. She also leaves behind eight great-grandchildren and twelve special nieces and nephews. Tan was preceded in death by her parents; her beloved grandson, Jared Hawley in 1994; her husband, Chet on Jan. 2, 1995; and her sister, Wilna Hale in 2002. A service to celebrate Francis' life will be held in Walton, N.Y., where she will be interred in the family plot sometime in the spring. Expressions of sympathy may be directed to her two favorite charities, the Boys and Girls Town USA or St. Judes Childrens Hospital. Arrangements are entrusted to the Martinson Funeral Home of Suttons Bay. FT. MYERS BEACH, Fla. - Audrienne J. McLaren VanderPyl, of Ft. Myers Beach, Fla., formerly of the Grand Traverse area, passed away on Tuesday, Nov. 16, 2004, releasing her from the prison of Alzheimer's. Audrienne was a loving wife, mother and grandmother, a gracious hostess, a poet and pottery teacher. Working with the Red Cross during World War II, she was able to disassemble and reassemble a Ford truck, of which she was very proud. Audrienne is survived by her loving husband of 67 years, Robert A. VanderPyl of Ft. Myers Beach, Fla.; daughter, Judith A. Owen and husband, Robert F. Owen of Traverse City; son, Robert Adrian VanderPyl and his wife, Hanah Lorant VanderPyl of Naples, Fla.; two grandchildren, Susanne Lenore Owen of Seattle, Wash. and David Duncan Owen and his wife, Robin of San Francisco, Calif.; and two great-grandchildren, Samara Ann Owen and Kyle David Owen, both of Seattle, Wash. Our family grieves her death, but can now begin to celebrate her loving and productive life. Private services will be scheduled at a later date. TRAVERSE CITY - Aletha Louise Zenner, 79, of Traverse City, passed away Monday, Nov. 15, 2004, at Munson Medical Center. Aletha was born, in Pontiac, on Aug. 29, 1925, to Percy and Irene (Bunert) Smith. On Feb. 18, 1950, in Pontiac, she married Clarence T. Zenner, who preceded her death in 1996. Mrs. Zenner graduated from Pontiac Central High School in 1943. She had previously been employed by Michigan Bell Telephone and Active Mobile Homes. Althea is survived by her daughter, Pamela (Dan) Prevo of Traverse City and Sanibel, Fla.; son, Robert (Kathryn) Zenner of Naperville, Ill.; five grandchildren, Michael (Nicole) Prevo of Royal Oak, Aaron (Andra) Prevo of Layton, Utah, Aimee (John) Lintner of Cedar Springs, Megan Prevo of Lansing and Jeremiah (Jennifer) Wilson of Naperville, Ill.; five great-grandchildren, Emma, Alexander, Meredith, Elliot and Addison; and several nieces and cousins. Her husband, Clarence; parents, Percy and Irene; brother, Leon; and niece, Karen preceded her in death. Visitation will take place at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City on Friday, Nov. 19, 2004, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Memorial gifts may be sent to the Michigan Heart Association or Munson Medical Center.
