COMSTOCK PARK - Mrs. Pearl Haywood, 81, passed away Wednesday morning, Nov. 24, 2004.
She was born and grew up on a farm on M-72 near Traverse City. As a young child she dug potatoes and gathered berries, this being the beginning of her learning to bake. Bread, cinnamon rolls and pies, mostly apple, which her husband liked, were her specialties. She learned that only staples were bought from the store, and everything else was homemade. From the bountiful garden she canned 104 quarts each of vegetables and 200 quarts of tomatoes.
The work and toil of providing for the family was fun. Saturday night was special because time was set aside for square dancing with her husband, Bill. Mrs. Haywood's whole life was devoted to God and her family. To be sure her children went to a Catholic school she encouraged them to pick cherries, and the money earned was to be used for their education. After Bill died, she continued to provide for her family by working for H.H. Cutler.
Her family remembers her fond love for her vegetable and flower gardens and the fun times with the pepper card game and cribbage.
She is survived by her children, Mrs. Mary L. Davis of Comstock Park, Mrs. Patricia Brown of Kentwood, Percy "Bill" and Esther Haywood of Comstock Park, Helen P. and Jim Allen of Wayland, and Sheila and Rick Hall of Howard City; 12 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren and the most anticipated arrival of two more great-grandsons; brother and sisters, Mrs. Irene Skiver, Mrs. Beatrice Pickard, Leonard and Carol Lautner, and Arlene and Jack Hahnenberg, all of Traverse City; brother-in-law, Robert and Nancy Haywood; sister-in-law, Jane and Bob Boomer, all of Empire; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, William O. Haywood on Oct. 6, 1973; a son, Charles Gail Haywood on June 29, 2002; and sons-in-law, Emmett M. Davis on Jan. 29, 1985, and J.C. Brown on Jan. 24, 1991; her parents, Adolph and Louisa Lautner; brothers, Roy Lautner and Wilbert Lautner; and sister, Doris Kevwitch.
Friends may celebrate Mrs. Haywood's life with her family Friday, Nov. 26, 2004, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m., at the Pederson Funeral Home in Rockford, where the rosary will be prayed at 7 p.m. The Mass of Christian Burial for Mrs. Haywood will be offered on Saturday morning, Nov. 27, 2004, at 11 a.m., at Assumption B.V.M. Catholic Church (please gather at the church), with the Rev. Peter Vu presiding. Interment will be in the Assumption B.V.M. Cemetery.
Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider Hospice of Greater Grand Rapids or Consolata Missionary Sisters.
