November 29, 2004ObituariesELIZABETH ANN 'BETTY' ACKERMAN, 69, of Traverse City, died after a long illness Friday, Nov. 26, 2004, at Munson Medical Center.Visitation will take place Tuesday evening, Nov. 30, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home, Traverse City. Funeral services are tentatively scheduled for 4 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 1, at the funeral home. A full obituary will appear in the Tuesday edition of the Traverse City Record-Eagle. DEAN OLIVER KOLK, 74, of Manistee, died Saturday, Nov. 27, 2004, at West Shore Medical Center in Manistee. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 1, at Herbert Funeral Home in Manistee, where visitation will take place two hours prior to the funeral services. Cremation will follow the service. CARELTON VOLTZ, 67, of Beulah, died Saturday, Nov. 27, 2004, at Paul Oliver Memorial Hospital Long Term Care. A complete obituary will appear in an upcoming edition of the Traverse City Record-Eagle. Arrangements are pending at the Benzonia Chapel of McElduff Funeral Homes. James C. Brown Died November 27, 2004 TRAVERSE CITY - James C. Brown, 81, of Traverse City, formerly of Brighton, passed away Saturday, Nov. 27, 2004. James was born in Texas on Oct. 3, 1923. After serving in the U.S. Army as a young man, he moved to the Detroit area, where he married Elverta Grace Scherf Aug. 16, 1949. He retired from General Motors Hydra-matic in Ypsilanti in 1980, after 30 years of service. James is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Elverta Grace Brown; two daughters, Arlene G. (William) Robertson of Elk Rapids and Norma J. (David) Garbula of Brighton; four grandsons, William J. (Linda) Robertson of Chesterfield Twps., Robert A. Robertson of Royal Oak, Jeremiah J. French of Brighton and David J. Garbula of Brighton; and one great-grandson, Ajay W. Robertson of Chesterfield Twps. Also surviving is a brother, Gerald E. Brown of Temple Texas; a sister, Norma Lee Hendrickson of Austin, Texas; and two half-brothers, C. M. Brown and Willy Brown, both of Texas. Funeral services will be held at noon Wednesday, Dec. 1, at the Dillingham-Liverance Niblack Funeral Home in Fowlerville. Visitation will take place one hour prior to the service. Jim W. Harkins Died November 25, 2004 TRAVERSE CITY - Jim W. Harkins, 79, of Traverse City, died Thursday, Nov. 25, 2004, at Munson Hospice House. He was born in Buckley on March 3, 1925, the son of Daniel J. and Carrie Adiline (Dixon) Harkins. He married Beverly Dawn Dekker, who preceded him in death. Jim retired from the United States Marine Corps after 25 years of service. He enjoyed outdoor activities such as hunting, fishing and mushrooming. He also enjoyed playing cards and bowling. Jim is survived by his son, James David Harkins; daughter, Susee D. Harkins; grandson, Douglas James McNabb; sister, Alva Lou Pearson; and seven nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his ex-wife, Beverly; and his parents; brother; and infant sister. Visitation will take place today, Nov. 29, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Covell-Smith Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 30, at 11 a.m., at the funeral home, with visitation one hour prior to the service. Burial will be in the Grant Township Cemetery. Memorials may be given to Munson Hospice House. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Covell-Smith Funeral Home in Kingsley. Marian (Bell) Morrow Died November 28, 2004 NAPLES, Fla. - Marian (Bell) Morrow was born in Detroit in 1917 and died Nov. 28, 2004, after an extended illness. A Bentley Village resident in Naples, Fla., she formerly lived in Traverse City. Marian attended the University of Michigan, where she met and married Earl Morrow, the love of her life. Recently they celebrated 67 wonderful years of marriage. Marian made family and friends her focus. Always cheerful, loving, kind and generous, she lived a full and vibrant life, warmly touching those around her. Her zest for travel, her phenomenal memory and prolific letter-writing were legendary. She is survived by her husband, Earl Morrow; sons, Tom (Merilyn) and Rick (Ann); daughter, Pat (Brad) Mack; six grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. She was an angel in their lives, and is now an angel in God's arms. Per Marian's request, a memorial service to celebrate her life will be held at a later date at the family's summer home in Traverse City. In lieu of flowers, the family wishes memorial gifts be made to Hospice of Naples, 1095 Whippoorwill Lane, Naples, FL 34105. Charles Edmond VanAlstine Died November 27, 2004 ARCADIA - Charles Edmond VanAlstine, 77, of Arcadia, died Saturday, Nov. 27, 2004, at Munson Medical Center. Charles was born Sept. 23, 1927, in Ashley, the son of James and Mary VanAlstine. He married Jean Irene Daggett on July 14, 1951, in Lansing. After Charles' retirement from the Montcalm County Road Commission in 1986, he spent his summers in Arcadia and winters in Foley, Ala. He was a devoted member of the Shriners and he visited 141 hospitals in various states. He was also a life member of the Masonic Lodge Stanton #250 and the Eastern Star Chapter # 47. All of his family and numerous friends will sadly and lovingly miss Charles. His wife, Jean VanAlstine, survives, along with their children, Mr. James VanAlstine of Vestaburg, Mr. and Mrs. Pauline (John) Talkowski of Vestaburg, Mr. and Mrs. Mike (Pat) VanAlstine of Lakeview, Mr. and Mrs. Betty (Ron) Hadley of Wyoming, Mich., Mr. and Mrs. Gordon (Barb) Howe of Stanton, Mr. and Mrs. Pat (Ron) Pence of Six Lakes, and Mrs. and Mrs. Joyce (Rene) Perez of Lakeview; 19 grandchildren and 34 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and a granddaughter, Mary Martha Talkowski. A memorial service will be held at 9 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 30, at the Benzonia Chapel of McElduff Funeral Homes. The family will receive friends from 8:30 a.m. until the time of the service in Benzonia. There is also a memorial service scheduled for 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Masonic Temple in Stanton. Memorials may be directed to the Forest Shrine Club in Arcadia or the Masonic Temple in Stanton. The Benzonia Chapel of McElduff Funeral Homes and Cremation Service is handling the arrangements.
