October 3, 2004ObituariesLEON J. BAILEY, 93, of Honor, died Friday, Oct. 1, 2004, at Paul Oliver Long Term Care in Frankfort. Visitation will be held Monday, Oct. 4, 2004, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m., at the Bennett-Barz Funeral Home in Beulah. Funeral services will be conducted on Tuesday, Oct. 5, 2004, at 1 p.m., also at the funeral home, with Fr. Ray Cotter officiating. Interment will follow in the Champion Hill Cemetery. A full obituary will be in Monday's edition of the Record-Eagle. ROBERT T. CLARK, 41, of Bear Lake, died Thursday, Sept. 30, 2004, at his home in Bear Lake. Memorial services will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 5, 2004, at 12 noon, at St. Mary's of Mt. Carmel Shrine Church in Manistee. Arrangements are by the Herbert Funeral Home P.C. in Manistee. DAVID PAUL LOWN, 50, of Grayling, died Friday, Oct. 1, 2004, at home. Visitation will be Monday, Oct. 4, 2004, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m., at the Sorenson Funeral Home, McEvers Chapel. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 5, 2004, at 1 p.m., also at the funeral home. Burial will be in St. Anthony's Cemetery in Hillsdale. Arrangements are by the Sorenson Funeral Home, McEvers Chapel, in Grayling. ROSE LYNETTE SIMSA, 90, of Monroe Center, died Saturday, Oct. 2, 2004, at Munson Hospice House. Arrangements are pending at the Covell-Smith Funeral Home in Kingsley. TRAVERSE CITY - Frances P. Kennison, 87, of Traverse City, died peacefully at home on Friday, Oct. 1, 2004. She was born Nov. 7, 1916, in Saginaw, and was the daughter of Alfred Smith and Ethel (Keene) Smith. On May 28, 1937, she married Howard J. Kennison, who preceded her in death on Jan. 24, 2004. She was also preceded in death by her son, Howard J. Kennison Jr. A recent resident to the Traverse City area, Frances resided in Gobles for 65 years prior to moving here. She was a licensed vocational nurse and worked at the Kalamazoo State Hospital Children Unit for approximately 32 years until she retired. She loved children, always seeking to meet their needs, with this love being reciprocated many times over with cards and letters form children who fondly addressed her as "my other mother." Frances was a devoted wife, dedicated mother to her children and a confidant to many, both young and old. Her major concern in life was the welfare of others, especially her children, and she would do anything to help. Frances was an excellent seamstress and loved to do needlework. Many members of her family and friends have been the recipient of her beautiful creations. She had a fondness for good literature, travel, camping and joining several of her friends for an evening out playing Bingo. She loved to garden, flowers being a specialty. Animals, birds and other forms of wildlife, especially cats, always had a special place in her heart. Survivors include her daughter, Sister Barbara Kennison, SSJ of Traverse City; son, Robert Louis Kennison and his wife, Linda, of Patriot, Ohio; sisters, Jane Rouse, Margaret Rouse and Christine and her husband, Earnest Ray, of Lansing; and brother, Frank Smith and his wife, Judy, of Ann Arbor. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, Oct. 4, 2004, at 11 a.m., at the Blessed Kateri Tekakwitha Catholic Church in Peshawbestown, with a viewing from 10 a.m. until the time of Mass. Memorials may be directed to Father Andrew Buvala for the Guatemala Educational Fund for Children. Arrangements are being handled by the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City. TRAVERSE CITY - Earl E. Gallagher, 94, of Traverse City, died Thursday, Sept. 30, 2004, at Highlander Assisted Living Home. He was born March 18, 1910, on Beaver Island, the son of James H. and Kitty (Allers) Gallagher. On Jan. 24, 1942, in Chicago, he married Mary E. Messenger, who preceded him in death on June 5, 2004. In 1996 they moved to Traverse City, where they were members of St. Francis Catholic Church and Holy Cross Catholic Church on Beaver Island. Mr. Gallagher earned a degree in civil engineering from the University of Detroit and served in the United States Army from 1941 to 1946, retiring as a captain, serving in England and France during World War II. Earl retired in 1990, from the Department of Housing and Urban Development, after 30 years of service as a civil engineer. He is survived by his son, Patrick (Eileen) Gallagher of Glenmont, N.Y.; daughter, Elizabeth (James) Whelan of Traverse City; grandchildren, Sean Whelan of Traverse City and Megan and James Gallagher of Glenmont, N.Y.; brother-in-law, John Coppens of Charlevoix; sister-in-law, Delores Gallagher of Chicago; and numerous nieces and nephews. Earl was the last survivor of his family of ten, which included: James W. Gallagher, Margaret McCann, Edith Burhans, Norbert Gallagher, Dorothy McCann, Msgr. Victor P. Gallagher, Leo Gallagher, Mae Coppens and Billy Gallagher. Friends may call on today, Oct. 3, 2004, from 6 to 8 p.m., at Holy Cross Catholic Church. A Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated Monday, Oct. 4, 2004, at 11 a.m., also at the church, with Fr. Patrick Cawley officiating. Interment will take place at Holy Cross Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Father Fred Foundation, PO Box 2260, Traverse City, MI 49685 or the Holy Cross Cemetery Fund, Beaver Island. Arrangements were provided by the Winchester Funeral Home of Charlevoix.
