October 28, 2004ObituariesJAMES J. ALLEN, 75, of Gaylord, died Sunday, Oct. 24, 2004, in Kalkaska. A graveside service will be held on Friday, Oct. 29, 2004, at 2 p.m., at the Westwood Cemetery in Kalkaska. Arrangements are by the Wolfe Funeral Home in Kalkaska. ROGER K. SMITH, 86, of Frankfort, passed away on Thursday, Oct. 21, 2004, at Munson Medical Center. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Oct. 30, 2004, at the A.H. Peters Funeral Home in Grosse Pointe Woods, at 10:30 a.m. The family is being locally served by the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City. ELK RAPIDS - Diane Yoder Cran, of Elk Rapids, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 26, 2004, at her home. Diane was born, in Detroit, to Harry and Juanita (Gafford) Yoder. She married William Alexander Cran on May 27, 2000, at the New Hope Community Church in Williamsburg. Diane lived, for many years, on Sanibel Island, Fla., where she owned and operated several restaurants, including the Button Wood BBQ. Before moving to Elk Rapids, she lived in Fort Myers, Fla. Diane was an active member of New Hope Community Church. She was a member of the Women of Hope and the church choir, and helped in coordinating luncheons and events for the church. She enjoyed assisting family and friends in the planning of weddings and special events in their lives. Diane also enjoyed cooking, reading and gardening. She is survived by her husband, William (Bill) Cran of Elk Rapids; son, Scott Robert Steger; parents, Harry and Juanita Yoder of Fort Myers, Fla.; sisters, Judith Chaisson and Susan Green of Elk Rapids; nieces and nephews, Kimberley (Ron Getz) Chaisson, Carrie (Louis) Nelson, Matthew (Stephanie) Quint, Charles (Nicki) Chaisson, Marc Quint and Lindsey Green; and many great-nieces and great-nephews. Diane was preceded in death by her grandparents, Harry and Carrie Yoder and Morris and Geneva Gafford. Visitation will take place today, Oct. 28, 2004, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m., at the New Hope Community Church in Williamsburg. A Celebration of Life Service will be held Friday, Oct. 29, 2004, at 11 a.m., also at the church. Arrangements were entrusted to the Covell Funeral Home of Elk Rapids. BAY CITY - Mrs. Elzinga, 81, of Bay City and Atwood, passed away early Wednesday morning, Oct. 27, 2004, at Bay Regional Medical Center. The former Jeanne Jeannotte was born on July 30, 1923, to the late J.A. Garfield and Blanche (Gunter) Jeannotte in Boston, Mass. On Sept. 16, 1943, she married Howard Elzinga in Brunswick, Maine. They made their home in Bay City from 1949 to 1976. At that time, they retired to a home on Antrim Dells Golf Course in Atwood. She was a former member of Westminster Presbyterian Church. Jeanne was an avid golfer and bridge player and a true family Matriarch. Besides her husband of 61 years, Jeanne is survived by five sons and their families, H. Kent (Joell Lovelace) of Traverse City; Christopher and wife, Kathy, and their sons, Jason, Jared and Joshua, of Bay City; Russell and wife, Gayle, and their children, Brandon and Ashley, of St. Louis, Mo.; Mark (Cindy Thompson) of Ann Arbor, and Mark's daughter, Nicole, who resides in Bellingham, Wash.; Duncan "Beau" and wife, Cindy, and their children, Alexandra and Ian, of Long Grove, Ill. She is also survived by a sister-in-law, Betty Jeannotte and her daughter, Jeanne, and son, Jim, all of Florida; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Edward and Milicent Elzinga, of Kalkaska, and their children, Greg, Chip and Beth. The family would like to thank the staff of 3 East at Bay Regional Medical Center and Bay Visiting Nurse and Hospice for their kindness during Jeanne's short illness. A celebration of Jeanne's life will take place Saturday, Oct. 30, 2004, at 2:30 p.m., at the Gephart Funeral Home, where the family will greet friends from 12 p.m. until the time of service. The Rev. William T. Hennessy will officiate. Memorial contributions may be made to the Upper Torch Lake Association, Banks Township, in Eastport, MI. FRANKFORT - Elizabeth A. (Ferrin) Starkey, 96, of Frankfort, died Monday, Oct. 25, 2004, at The Maples. She was born on Aug. 24, 1908, in Lapeer County, the third of five children, to Albert and Mable (Palmer) Ferrin. Elizabeth married Glenn G. Starkey, of Mt. Clemens, on Sept. 4, 1926. To this union four daughters, Barbara, Virginia, Mildred and Laurel, were born. She was a member of the Frankfort Wesleyan Church and served as adult Sunday School teacher and Missionary president for many years. She was a cook at Paul Oliver Memorial Hospital until she retired in 1973. Elizabeth is survived by daughters, Virginia (Dale) Cooper of Walkerville, Mildred (Ming) Hawkins of Lapeer and Laurel "Lori" (Ken) Rose of North Branch; fifteen grandchildren, Dennis (Kathy) Cooper, Keith (Deb) Cooper, Craig (Linda) Cooper, Dawn (Bill) Ross, Mark(Rosemary) Cooper, Gary (Jody) Cooper, Rachel (Jeff) Iteen, Peter Cooper, Donald (Deb) Hawkins, Yvonne (Ed) Kalbfleisch, James (Lynne) Hawkins, Ray (Lavonya) Hawkins, Susan (Jon) Kirback, Kathe (Bryan) Shaw and Todd (Kerry) Rose; 42 great-grandchildren; 11 great-great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; and special friends, Joyce and George Kirback. She was preceded in death by daughter, Barbara; granddaughter, Cherri Hawkins-Wilson; great-granddaughter, Joy Wilson; great-grandson, Matthew Shaw; and son-in-law, James Hawkins. Friends may visit today, Oct. 28, 2004, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m., at the Benzonia Chapel of McElduff Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held Friday, Oct. 29, 2004, at 11 a.m., at the Frankfort Family Faith Nazarene Church, with the Rev. Tom Shelder officiating. Interment will be in Benzonia Township Cemetery. GRAWN - Fred Louis Birdsey, 104, of Grawn, died early Wednesday morning, Oct. 27, 2004, in Empire. Fred was born in Leelanau County on December 26, 1899, one of 10 children born to Emma (Favreau) and Erastus McEwen Birdsey. He married Bernice Warn in 1919, and she preceded him in death. He then married Gertrude Welch, who died in 1998. Fred was a barber all of his life, owning Fred's Barber Shop on Union Street until 1944, at which time he was also a gunsmith, buying and repairing guns. He moved to Grawn and continued to cut hair for the next 60 years, along with raising and riding horses, which he thoroughly enjoyed. Fred is survived by a son, Dwight Ellery "Al" (Helen) Birdsey of Traverse City; a daughter, Dorothy Jane Manning of Empire; six grandchildren, Jon and Thomas Birdsey, Robert, Douglas and Cheryl Manning and Victoria Brunjes; seven great-grandchildren; three step great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Fred was preceded in death by a son, Roland; his parents; and siblings, Myrtle, George and Mary Birdsey, Katherine Aldrich, Irene Kumbalek and Byron, Ivan and Ellery Birdsey. Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 30, 2004, at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City, with the Rev. William Dye of the Empire United Methodist Church officiating. OLD MISSION - Barbara Shambaugh Rosi, 93, of Old Mission, died Monday morning, Oct. 25, 2004, at Southridge Assisted Senior Living. Formerly of Chicago, she resided at her home on West Bay since 1980. Daughter of Dr. George E. Shambaugh Sr. and Edith Capps Shambaugh, "Bobbie" was born Jan. 12, 1911, the fourth of six children. Educated at the University of Chicago Lab School, Dana Hall, Vassar College, the Boston Academy of Fine Arts and the Art Institute of Chicago, she was an accomplished sculptor and avid student of history and the arts. She married A. Louis Rosi, a general surgeon of Chicago, on Feb. 14, 1936, and they raised four boys: two doctors and two lawyers, one with the FBI. She was widowed in 1967. A Democrat in her youth, she became conservative in her late 20s, was active in the League of Women Voters, the Republican Party, the Mothers Club of Morgan Park Military Academy, Chicago, the Old Mission Women's Club, a founding member of the Old Mission Conservancy, now Grand Traverse Regional Land Conservancy, and the Old Mission Historical Society. Second only to her husband, her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren were the joy of her life. Her Old Mission home has been a center of extended family life. Prior to moving to Southridge, Bobbie would work busily in her woods, play with her dogs, read avidly and engage socially and politically in the community. She is survived by brother, Benjamin (Adele) of Cambridge, Mass.; four sons, Peter (Marilyn) of Prospect Heights, Ill., Philip (Joann) of Traverse City, Tomlin (Marilyn) of Grayling and Robert (Penelope) of Old Mission; 19 grandchildren; 23 of her 24 great-grandchildren; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her father and mother; two brothers, George II and Philip; and two sisters, Stephanie (Kramer) and Jeannette (Stein-Elliott). She will be remembered fondly for her enthusiasm for all aspects of life. Her joy of food and conversation were legendary, as was her ready willingness to share her opinions and advice on almost any subject. With her exceptional memory, she regularly shared stories from her childhood predating the first World War and continuing to the present. Services are planned for Saturday, Oct. 30, 2004, at 2 p.m., at the Old Mission Congregational Church, where friends may begin to call at 1 p.m. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Grand Traverse Regional Community Foundation for preserving the Dougherty House. Hamilton of Thompsonville, 39, died unexpectedly Friday, Oct. 22, 2004, at Paul Oliver Memorial Hospital. Russell was born in Goodrich on Aug. 20, 1965. He married Roxie A. Sauer on Aug. 4, 1998, in Beulah. Russell was a handyman who could fix anything. He was always there to help and was a friend to all. Russell was an avid fisherman and hunter. He loved work, and it was his life. Russell is survived by his wife, Roxie; and his children, Dakota, Christina, Rebecca and Jason. He is also survived by grandchildren, Drew, Storm and Cloud; his mother, Ruthann Henke; brothers, Kirt Henke and Mark Hamilton; sister, Cindy Miller; and a niece and several nephews. A celebration of Russell's life will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 30, at the Fire Hall in Thompsonville. Memorial contributions may be directed to the family. The arrangements have been entrusted to the Benzonia Chapel, McElduff Funeral Homes & Cremation Service.
