October 6, 2004ObituariesMONTICELLO, Ill. - George Bruce Loucks, 71, of Monticello, Ill., died Saturday, Sept. 4, 2004, at Carie Foundation Hospital in Urbana, Ill.Born April 23, 1933, in Traverse City, he was the son of Bruce Davies and Edith Lucille (Bohrer) Loucks. On Sept. 11, 1954, in Traverse City, he married Florence A. Panek. Mr. Loucks was a retired major from the United Sates Air Force, receiving many medals which included the Distinguished Flying Cross, Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal with three Oak Leaf Clusters, Air Force Commendation Medal, Air Force Presidential Unit Citation, Air Force Outstanding Unit Award with two bronze Oak Leaf Clusters, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Republic Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Palm Device and Republic Vietnam Campaign Medal. He is survived by his wife, Florence Loucks of Monticello, Ill.; sons, Bruce Davies Loucks of Cape Coral, Fla., George Stewart Loucks of Ft. Sam in Houston, Texas; daughter, Lorene Mae Faulkner of Monticello, Ill; and grandchildren, Justin Davies Loucks, Erin Michelle Loucks, Danelle Loucks, Kayla Mae Faulkner, Paisley Loucks and George Elliott Loucks. Mr. Loucks was preceded in death by his parents. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Oct. 27, 2004, at Arlington National Cemetery in Washington, D.C., where he will also be buried. VERO BEACH, Fla. - Paul Nathaniel Gustafson, 96, passed away on Oct. 2, 2004, in Vero Beach, Fla. One of five children of Swedish immigrants, Anna and Axel Gustafson, he was born March 10, 1908, in Marlborough, Mass., grew up in Lynn, Mass., graduated from English High School and completed the apprenticeship program as a tool-and-die maker at General Electric. When laid off during The Great Depression, he and a friend pooled resources and traveled across the continent. This trip instilled an interest in the West that continued throughout his lifetime. In 1934, Paul married Ruth Augusta Noren in Lynn. They celebrated 52 years of marriage prior to her death. He is survived by their daughters, Elaine (Edwin) Labuz of Vero Beach, Fla., and Central Lake, Audrey (James) Erickson of Broken Arrow, Okla., and Vero Beach, Fla.; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. As a young man Paul caddied, unloaded freight cars, set up production and did estimating and purchasing. After leaving General Electric to sell machinery, he accepted a position with Michigan Tool company in Detroit, where he became superintendent of the gear division. Upon moving the plant to Traverse City, Paul was appointed vice president and general manager of Cone Drive Gear Division, Ex-Cell-O Corporation. Following retirement from the corporation in 1973, Paul and Ruth wintered in Vero Beach. They became residents in 1986. A lifelong member of the Evangelical Covenant Church, he was a founder and charter member of West Bay Covenant Church in Traverse City. He last held membership in the Vero Beach Covenant Church where he met and married Edith Ogren in 1987. She was a supportive partner during their marriage. His interest in travel and golf intensified following his retirement and although an eight handicap increased, he continued to play golf well into his 90s when he scored a seventh hole-in-one! Paul served on a variety of service boards which included vice president of American Gear Manufactures Association, director and president of Munson Medical Center, director and president of Asgard Sheltered Workshop and the Girl Scout Advisory Council. A memorial service will be held in Florida at a future date. The family suggests memorial donations be made in Paul's name to the VNA/Hospice of Indian River County, 1110 35th Lane, Vero Beach, FL 32960. MAPLE CITY - Michael Allen Galla, 37, of Maple City, passed away on Oct. 4, 2004, at his home after a brief illness. He was born on May 21, 1967, in Traverse City, the son of Leon and Loretta (Nemeskal) Galla. Mike was a member of the Cedar Hill Toppers Snowmobile Club for many years. He loved to hunt and was obsessed with getting that elusive "Big Buck." He also enjoyed his gun hobby, snowmobiling, playing cards and running his small engine repair business. Mike was always ready to help his family and friends out with whatever their needs were. He was especially fond of his nieces and nephews, whom he loved dearly. He is survived by his parents; three brothers, Gary (Trudy) Galla and Greg, both of Maple City, and Mark (Debra) Galla of Stevensville; six nieces; and two nephews. Preceding Mike in death were his grandparents. Visitation will be held on Thursday, Oct. 7, 2004, from 4 to 8 p.m., with a rosary at 7:30 p.m., at the Martinson Funeral Home. The funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday, Oct. 8, 2004, at 10 a.m., at Holy Rosary Church in Isadore. Burial will follow in the Mount Calvary Cemetery. The Rev. Garth Hilmer will officiate. Memorials may be given to the Leelanau County Chapter of the American Cancer Society or the Cedar Fire and Rescue Department, in memory of Mike. Arrangements were made by the Martinson Funeral Home of Suttons Bay. TRAVERSE CITY - Mary M. Egler, 76, died Tuesday, Sept. 28, 2004, in California. A lifelong resident of Traverse City, Mary retired from Michigan Bell after 35 years of service. Surviving Mary is her daughter, Linda L. (Richard) Tebay of Vacaville, Calif. She was preceded in death by her husband, Gerald R. Egler. A private burial will take place at Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Traverse City Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes. DEATHS       ELEANOR L. FAVORITE, 70, died Monday, Oct. 4, 2004, at Munson Medical Center. A full obituary will appear in a future edition of the Record-Eagle. Arrangements are being handled by the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City. BABY CECILIA ANNE PUPEL, daughter of Jim and Michele Pupel, was stillborn Monday, Oct. 4, 2004, at Munson Medical Center. Funeral arrangements will be announced by The Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home. KENNETH LEROY STEELE, 89, of Fife Lake, died Tuesday, Oct. 5, 2004, at Eden Long Care Facility in Kalkaska. Arrangements are pending and have been entrusted to the Covell-Smith Funeral Home in Kingsley. Sarah "Sally" Adams Died October 1, 2004 LELAND - Sarah "Sally" Adams, 57, of Leland, passed away accidentally at her home on Friday, Oct. 1, 2004. She was born on Oct. 25, 1946, in Fort Wayne, Ind., the daughter of Samuel Pickens and Kathryn (Koenig) Adams. Sally graduated from Ft. Wayne's South Side High School and attended Michigan State University. She was currently employed at Tom's Market in Northport. She truly had an undying love of animals and was well-known in Leland for walking her dogs. Sally is survived by her sister, Elizabeth "Betsy" (Bill) Van Westen of Suttons Bay; her dog, Ben; and her very loving friends. Preceding Sally in death were her parents and her dog, Heidi. No service is planned at this time. Memorials may be directed to the Cherryland Humane Society or the Immanuel Lutheran Church of Leland. Arrangements were made by the Martinson Funeral Home of Suttons Bay.
