BENZONIA - Frances Dean (VanSchaack) Amstutz, 95, died Tuesday, Aug. 31, 2004, at her home. Born May 1, 1909, in Sioux City, Iowa, she was raised in Highland Park with her twin brothers, Gordon and Raymond, in the loving care of William and Florence VanSchaack.
Frances attended Highland Park High School, Wooster College and Oberlin College, receiving a degree in Elementary Education.
She married Edward Delbert Amstutz in 1935, they moved to Schenectady, N.Y., and finally settled in Bethlehem, Pa., where they raised three children, Edward Allison, Jean Louise and William Platte.
She enjoyed teaching elementary age children and became a favorite substitute for the Bethlehem schools. Frances was active in various social groups, but especially enjoyed the activities of her church, The First Presbyterian of Bethlehem.
Her husband was a college professor at Lehigh University, which allowed for summer vacations traveling throughout the United States, Canada and Alaska, providing rich experiences for the whole family. The frequent trips always started and ended at the family cottage on Platte Lake. Summers were not complete without the swim in the lake.
After retiring in 1972, they moved to Leisure Hills, Ariz. for the winters, with summers always at Platte Lake. Subsequent moves took her to Garland, Texas, Ludington and finally to Benzonia with residence at The Homesteader, where she prepared for her final journey.
She enjoyed a good game of Bridge and Scrabble, church activities at Honor Congregational and many frequent drives sightseeing on the local roads. In her later years, her passion was knitting lap robes for the elderly and delivering them to nursing homes from Beulah to Ludington.
Frances is survived by her two sons and their families.
A family memorial service will be held to celebrate her life, death and eternal life in the family of God.
The Frankfort Chapel of McElduff Funeral Homes is serving the family.
