      TIM LEE BORGEN, 39, of Cedar, died Sunday, April 10, 2005, at home.
      Services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, April 15, at Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home, Friends may call from 11 a.m. until service time at the funeral home.

      MARGUERITE ELEANOR "PEG" KERWIN EMENS, 87, of Traverse City, formerly of Rochester, N.Y., peacefully entered into eternal rest April 9, 2005, while residing at Munson Hospice House.
      Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home is serving the family. A full obituary will follow in an upcoming edition of the Traverse City Record-Eagle.

      JANICE R. JOHNSON, 93, of Manistee and Traverse City, died Monday, April 11, 2005, at Munson Medical Center.
      Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, April 15, at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Manistee, with visitation one hour prior.
      Arrangements are being made by Johnson Funeral Home, Manistee.

      JOANNE SMART, 65, of Traverse City, died unexpectedly Wednesday, April 6, 2005.
      Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 16, at Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home, with Rev. Ellen Brubaker officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service.

Mildred L. Allen
Died April 8, 2005
      TRAVERSE CITY - Mildred Lucy Allen, 100, died Friday, April 8, 2005, in Northport.
      Mildred was born on Feb. 24, 1905, in Vernon, the daughter of Birney and Rhoda (Keyes) Hopkins. Following graduation from high school, she attended Ypsilanti State Normal School, majoring in art. She married Jesse C. Allen, known as J. C., on June 21, 1924, in Vernon. They would enjoy 60 years of marriage before J. C.'s death on Sept. 2, 1994.
      For many years, Mildred worked for Milliken's, and then as a sales associate for Union Office Supply, retiring in 1989. She wrote for the Detroit Free Press.
      Mildred organized the first Mother's Singers in Traverse City at Oak Park School, where she was involved and served on the council of the PTA. A very active member of Central United Methodist Church, Mildred also was a member of the Wesleyan Fellowship. She held membership in the Order of the Eastern Star.
      Mildred was a charter member of the Northwestern Michigan Artist and Craftsman Association, was a member of the civic choir and the Grand Traverse Pioneer and Historical Society and, along with Merlin Dumbrille, she produced the first school program on the radio in Traverse City.
      Mildred is survived by her children, David (Iva) Allen of Northport and Barbara (Edward) Atkinson of Elk Rapids; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
      In addition to her husband, Mildred was preceded in death by her parents and a granddaughter, Rosemarie Atkinson.
      Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, April 15, in the Chapel of Central United Methodist Church. The Rev. John Ellinger will officiate. Burial of her cremated remains will take place in Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens.
      The family asks that memorial contributions be directed to Central United Methodist Church or to the Grand Traverse Pioneer and Historical Society.
      The family is being served by the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home.

Arvid Arvidson
Died April 9, 2005
      SANFORD - Arvid Arvidson, 53, of Sanford, died unexpectedly from an apparent heart condition Saturday, April 9, 2005, at the MidMichigan Medical Center.
      He was born Nov. 27, 1951, in Grand Rapids, son of the late Leon and Phyllis (Nelson) Arvidson.
      Arvid had worked at the Dow Corning Semi-Conductor plant in Hemlock as Senior Research Scientist for more than 30 years. On April 11, 2003, Arvid married Sharon Knipe in Sanford.
      Arvid is survived by his wife, Sharon; one son, Eric Arvidson of Midland; two daughters, Amanda Arvidson of Midland and her fianc‚e Brian Fresonke, and Andrea Arvidson of Midland; three stepsons, Aaron (Shannon) Weinrick of Waterford, Armen Weinrick of Frisco, Texas, and Platt (Andrea) Weinrick of Owosso; two sisters, Yvonne (Ed) McDonald of Coopersville, Dawn (Buzz) Veldheer of Greenville, S. C.; and two grandchildren, Elissa and Savannah.
      Arvid's family will receive friends at the funeral home today, April 12, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Ware-Smith-Woolever Funeral Home, 1200 West Wheeler Street, Midland.
      Funeral services will take place at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 13, at the funeral home, with visitation one hour prior to the services.

Phyllis Berardi
Died April 7, 2005
      TRAVERSE CITY - Phyllis Berardi, 81, of Traverse City, died April 7, 2005, at the Grand Traverse Pavilions.
      Phyllis was born March 15, 1924, in Polestine, Italy, to Vincent and Maria (Milano) Mileto. She lived in the U.S. since 1927. On March 2, 1946, she married Leonard N. Berardi.
      Phyllis was a homemaker. She and Leonard lived in Traverse City since 1971. They enjoyed wintering in Las Vegas for many years.
      Besides her husband of almost 60 years, Phyllis, is survived by her sisters, Nancy (Andrew) Russo of Westland, Angelina (Quinto) Cariote of Taylor, Frances (Vito) Lazzezzari of Austin, Texas, Rosemary (Frank) Caccamo of Auburn Hills and Sue Ann Mileto of Jackson; two brothers, Dominic (Betty) Mileto of Southgate and Frank (Sandra) Mileto of Livonia.
      Visitation will take place today, April 12, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City.
      The Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Traverse City, with Fr. Edwin Thome officiating.
     
John Spaulding Both
Died April 10, 2005
      CEDAR - John Spaulding Both, 64, passed away at his home in Cedar on April 10, 2005.
      He was born Aug. 30, 1940, to Clifford and Myrtle Both in Harbor Beach, where he spent his childhood days golfing and fishing with his family. After graduating from Harbor Beach High School, John enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served four years on the U.S.S. Helena. He was the most important member of the ship - the baker.
      In 1963 he met his bride-to-be, Susan Lynne Lucksted, at the Susy-Q Restaurant in Roseville, where they both worked. They raised a family of five in Susan's childhood home in the Detroit area.
      John worked as a pipe fitter for 18 years before moving to Cedar in 1978. He taught electrical occupations at the T.B.A. Career Tech Center, and also worked as a ranger at Mistwood and Sugar Loaf golf courses. John loved to play, watch and teach the game of golf, and enjoyed the sport with many friends and family, including his children and grandchildren.
      John survived with a heart transplant performed 12 years ago at Cleveland Clinic, and overcame two bouts of cancer. His strength and courage in dealing with his health problems were inspirational to those around him.
      He is survived by his wife, Susan, and their five children, Cliff (Sherry) Both, Laura (Bill) O'Brien, Gary Both, Cindi Both and Tammy (Chris) Gushurst, and daughter-in-law Johanna Bruce. They all reside in the Traverse City/Cedar area. His grandchildren are Christopher Both, Jamisen Both, Devon Kelly, Taylor Dall, Hunter and Zachary Gushurst and Suzanna Both.
      John is also survived by brothers, Don of Cedar and Ken (Robyn) of Las Vegas; and sister, Gail Woody of Harbor Beach.
      He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Stuart.
      Following cremation, there will be a private ceremony for the immediate family. A memorial golf outing will be held at a later date.

      The family was assisted by the Reynolds-Jonhkoff Funeral Home.

Jack Michael Brief
Died April 6, 2005
      TRAVERSE CITY - Jack Michael Brief died Wednesday, April 6, 2005.
      He was the beloved son of Jon and Laurie Brief; loving brother of Ashley, Nicholas, Kimberly, Anne Marie and Maxwell Brief; and grandson of Larry and Tari Moore and the late Leonard and Marion Brief.
      Funeral Mass was held at St. Patrick Catholic Church in White Lake Saturday, April 9. Interment will be in Oakwood Cemetery, Traverse City.
      Memorial contributions may be made to the Huron Valley-Sinai Hospital Neonatal Unit.
      The family is being served by the Lynch & Sons Funeral Home, Walled Lake.

Harold R. Buddy
Died April 10, 2005
      KALKASKA - Mr. Harold R. Buddy, of Kalkaska, beloved father, grandfather and great-grandfather, passed away Sunday, April 10, 2005, at Hoyt Nursing and Rehab Centre. He was 91.
      Harold was born Nov. 16, 1913, in LeGrand. He married Edna Wiesner on April 1, 1933. She predeceased him July 1, 1997.
      Harold had been employed by Saginaw Steering Gear for 36 years, retiring in 1971. He enjoyed the outdoors at Bear Lake, especially with his family and friends.
      Surviving are two sons, three daughters and their spouses, Harold (Patricia) Buddy of Sanford, Randall (Jean) Buddy of Saginaw, Diane Hill of Hudsonville, Teri (Stephen) Nichols of Saginaw, and Sandra (Larry) VanSlembrouck of Saginaw; 10 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and his wonderful friends and neighbors.
      In addition to his wife, Harold was preceded in death by a daughter, Patricia L. Boettcher.
      Honoring Mr. Buddy's wishes, cremation has taken place. A private memorial service will take place, with burial of cremains in Roselawn Memorial Gardens, Saginaw.

Reinhold L. Hessler
Died April 10, 2005
      EASTPORT - Reinhold L. Hessler, 74, of Eastport, died Sunday, April 10, 2005, at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.
      Reinhold was born June 3, 1930, in Obernau, Germany, the son of Nikolaus and Frieda (Aulbach) Hessler.
      A renowned trainer of German wire-haired pointers, Reinhold owned and operated the Von Timberwolf Kennels of Eastport. He began breeding and training German wire-haired pointers in 1954 in Germany, and also worked for the German DNR.
      He moved to Eastport from Germany in 1978, where he founded the Von Timberwolf Kennels and also worked as a tool and die maker for the Lamina Bronze Corporation of Bellaire. He retired from Lamina in 1994. He was also a long-time driver for the former Torch Bay Ambulance.
      Reinhold was a member of the American Kennel Association and Michigan Outdoors.
      In Germany, he married Renate Rastatter, who survives. Also surviving is a daughter, Jeannette (Charles) Moffat of Central Lake; a sister, Rosa Mann of Clinton Twp.; a granddaughter, Nicole (Timothy) Wilson of Saranac; three nieces and one nephew.
      He was preceded in death by his parents.
      Graveside services will be held at noon Saturday, April 30, at Lakeview Cemetery in Torch Lake Twp., with Rev. Dale Scott officiating.
      Memorial contributions may be made to the Torch Lake Twp. Fire Department and Ambulance.
      Arrangements are being made by the Central Lake Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes.
     
Donald James 'Don' O'Rourke
      Died April 4, 2005
      DAVISON - Donald James "Don" O'Rourke, 87, of Davison, passed away Monday, April 4, 2005, at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.
      Mr. O'Rourke was born Dec. 14, 1917, in Flint, the son of Patrick and Grace (Clark) O'Rourke. He married Elizabeth C. "Beth" Hutchinson in 1940. She preceded him in death in 1998.
      Don served in the 448th Bomber Group in England during World War II as an upper turret gunner, flying more than 20 missions over Germany and Austria. He received "Certificates of Valor" with three Oak Leaf Clusters and a "Victory Medal."
      Mr. O'Rourke retired as a civilian employee of the Department of Defense, representing the U.S. and Ottawa, Canada, where he was awarded the Medal of "Meritorious Civil Service."
      He was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Davison.
      He is survived by his children, Mary Beth (Nick) Panchula of Davison, Don J. (Beth) O'Rourke of Morrow, Ohio, John M. (Judy) O'Rourke of Rockford, Thomas P. (Connie) O'Rourke of Traverse City and Anne Marie (Tim) Shepherd of Dunedin, Fla.; 13 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; his siblings, H. Patrick O'Rourke, Marian Snyder and Grace Meagher. He was loved by many cousins, nieces and nephews.
      In addition to his wife, Grace, he was preceded in death by his grandson, Ryan P. O'Rourke, and granddaughter, Christine S. Shepherd; two sisters and two brothers.
      A Funeral Mass was celebrated Friday, April 8, at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Davison, with Rev. Fr. Andrew Czajkowski, celebrant. Burial was in Old Calvary Catholic Cemetery.
      Memorial contributions may be made to Munson Hospice House or the Juvenile Diabetes Association.
      The Allen Funeral Home in Davison handled arrangements.
