Obituaries

      ELLEN E. BLANSHAN, 84, of Mancelona, died Tuesday, Aug. 16, 2005, at Tender Care Nursing Home in Gaylord.
      Visitation will be Friday, Aug. 19, 2005, from 7 to 9 p.m., at the Wolfe Funeral Home in Kalkaska. Funeral services will be held Saturday, Aug. 20, at 11 a.m., also at the funeral home, with visitation from 9 a.m. until the time of services. There will be a graveside service at the Evergreen Cemetery in Kalkaska.
      Arrangements are by the Wolfe Funeral Home.

      RICHARD LEE JOHNSTON, 72, of Traverse City, died Tuesday, Aug. 16, 2005, at Munson Hospice House.
      Graveside services will be held Saturday, Aug. 20, 2005, at 3 p.m., at Maple Grove Cemetery in Grawn. A complete obituary will be published in Friday's edition of the Record-Eagle.
      The family has entrusted funeral arrangements to Oak Grove Cremation Center.

      WAVER GLENDOLA "MO" LOVELY, 87, of Grayling, died Tuesday, Aug. 16, 2005.
      Visitation will be Friday, Aug. 19, 2005, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m., at the Sorenson-Lockwood Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, Aug. 20, at 11 a.m., at St. Marys Catholic Church.
      Arrangements are by the Sorenson-Lockwood Funeral Home in Grayling.

      JERROLD MOSS, 52, of Lathrup Village, formerly of Traverse City, died Wednesday, Aug. 17, 2005, in Madison Heights.
      Visitation will be Friday, Aug. 19, 2005, from 2 to 9 p.m., at the Hopcroft Funeral Home in Madison Heights. Funeral services will be Saturday, Aug. 20, at 2 p.m., also at the funeral home, with the Rev. William C. Lawrence officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Traverse City.
      Arrangements are by the William Sullivan and Son Funeral Home in Royal Oak.

      ANN B. PERSIG, 94, of Onekama, died Wednesday, Aug. 17, 2005, at the Manistee County Medical Care Facility.
      Visitation will be Friday, Aug. 19, 2005, from 7 to 9 p.m., at the Herbert Funeral Home in Manistee. A Mass from the Order of Christian Funerals will be celebrated Saturday, Aug. 20, 2005, at 10 a.m., at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Onekama, where visitation will take place one hour prior to the Mass. Burial will immediately follow in the St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery in Onekama.
      Arrangements are by the Herbert Funeral Home.

      VIRGINIA M. PFEIFFER, 82, of Elk Rapids, died Monday, Aug. 15, 2005, at the Grand Traverse Pavilions.
      Visitation will take place today, Aug. 18, from 3 to 8 p.m. at the Elk Rapids Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes.
      Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 19, with visitation one hour to prior to the services, at the First Presbyterian Church of Elk Rapids. Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery.
      Arrangements have been entrusted to the Elk Rapids Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes.
     
George Allen Chew
Died August 15, 2005
      NILES - George Allen Chew, 79, of Niles, died Monday, Aug. 15, 2005, at his home after an illness.
      He was born June 3, 1926, in South Bend, Ind., the son of Wiley R. and Dora B. (Lamb) Chew. On June 20, 1951, he married Norma Jean Helmlinger, who preceded him in death on Feb. 1, 1998.
      Working at Kawneer Company of Niles and United Technology of Traverse City, he lived in Edwardsburg and Niles until 1977, moved to Traverse City until 2001, then moved back to Niles.
      George is survived by his sons, George A. Chew Jr. of Muskegon and Troy A. Chew of Traverse City; daughters, Charlene Chew of Niles, Donna Curtis of Bonita Springs, Fla., Linda (Jeff) Eggeman of Muskegon and Jeannie (Van) Smith of Freeport, Maine; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and sisters, Rose Kantz of Traverse City and Mary Carpenter of Niles.
      Along with his wife, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Virginia M. Chew in 1977.
      Friends may call Friday, Aug. 19, 2005, from 5 to 8 p.m., at the Paul E. Mayhew Funeral Home in Edwardsburg. Funeral services will be held Saturday, Aug. 20, at 1 p.m., also at the funeral home, where friends may call one hour prior to the services. The Rev. Clearence Dycus, retired Baptist Minister, will officiate. Burial will take place in the Edwardsburg Cemetery.

Virginia M. Pfeiffer
Died August 15, 2005
      ELK RAPIDS - Virginia M. Pfeiffer, 82, of Elk Rapids, died Monday, Aug. 15, 2005, at Grand Traverse Pavilions.
      She was born Sept. 20, 1922, in Detroit, the daughter of Paul W. and Anna M. (Centala) Strobeck. Virginia married Samuel F. Pfeiffer on Oct. 17, 1942, in Detroit.
      She was employed at Milliken's Department Store in Traverse City, was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Elk Rapids and was the past president of the Elk Rapids Garden Club.
      Virginia enjoyed reading and watching movies. She truly loved her family, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
      She is survived by her husband of 62 years, Samuel F. Pfeiffer of Elk Rapids; two sons, Samuel Jr. (Martha) Pfeiffer of Farmington Hills and James Pfeiffer of Creston, Colo.; four grandchildren, Samuel III "Trey" (Mackenzie) Pfeiffer of Chelsea, Jennifer Jean (Richard) Henderson of Tucson, Ariz., Grace (Tim) Johnson of Eustis, Fla., and Zeb Pfeiffer of Taos, N.M.; six great-grandchildren, Ethan Pfeiffer and Colby Pfeiffer, both of Chelsea, Christopher Bostick, Cassandra Henderson, Garrett Henderson and Colton Henderson, all of Tucson, Ariz.; and one sister, Marvella Strobeck of Ellsworth.
      Visitation will be held today, Aug. 18, 2005, from 3 to 8 p.m., at the Covell Funeral Home in Elk Rapids. Funeral services will be held on Friday, Aug. 19, 2005, at 11 a.m., from the First Presbyterian Church in Elk Rapids, where visitation will take place one hour prior to the service. The Rev. Dr. Daniel Herlein will officiate. Burial will take place in Maple Grove Cemetery in Elk Rapids.
      Memorials may be directed to the First Presbyterian Church.
      Arrangements have been entrusted to the Covell Funeral Home of Elk Rapids.
     
George J. Shink Sr.
Died August 17, 2005
      TRAVERSE CITY - George John Shink Sr., 96, of Traverse City, died Wednesday, Aug. 17, 2005, at Munson Medical Center.
      George was born in Detroit on Dec. 7, 1907, the son of George and Theresa (Berkowitz) Shink.
      Survivors include his son, George W. (Sharon) of Traverse City; and daughters, Jacqueline Hayes of Detroit, Arline (Tony) Mancini of Sterling Heights and Christine (Jim) Buckley of Romeo. Many grandchildren and great-grandchildren also survive.
      George was preceded in death by his wife, Sylvia on Dec. 19, 1999.
      Private family services are being planned.
      Memorial contributions may be directed to the Father Fred Foundation.
      The family is being served by the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home.
