David Mark Schmid
Born Oct 16, 1955 - Lost Aug. 21, 2005
LUDINGTON - David Mark Schmid was lost Sunday, August 21, the result of a tragic boating accident on Glen Lake, in Leelanau County. He was 49.
David is survived by his wife, Sandra, and his two daughters, Cassidy, 10, and Alyssa, 7. He is also survived by both of his parents, Allan and Virginia. He also leaves behind his siblings, Philip, Kathryn, Melanie and Greg and his wife, Jodi. Also surviving David is his nephew, Michael, and nieces, Stephanie, Carla and Sarah.
David was born and raised in Saginaw. He attended the University of Michigan, and served in the U.S. Navy before entering into a career in the energy business. At the time of his death, he was the plant manager of the Michigan Power cogeneration plant in Ludington, where he had settled his family.
His parents' family home is on the narrows at Glen Lake, where the accident took place under windy weather conditions. State and local law enforcement agencies searched diligently but without resolve for David's earthly remains until the following Saturday.
His family takes comfort in the fact that David gave himself to take his family out of harm's way. His heroic act of self-sacrifice surprised neither his family, nor the multitude of friends and co-workers who share their grief.
The family and friends will hold a memorial service at the Glen Lake Community Reformed Church, 4902 W. MacFarlane Road (C.R.616) on the southeast side of Big Glen Lake at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 31. The reception begins at noon.
The family has requested, in lieu of flowers, that well wishers make donations to, or volunteer for, the Leelanau County Sheriff Department Victims Response Team, a victim assistance volunteer program that provides Victims Advocates to families who suffer tragedy. Donations may be made in care of the Leelanau County Sheriff's Department, 201 Chandler Street, Leland, MI 49654; phone (231) 256-9872.
