Recipe of the week

Loretta Frazier's Cherry Torte

Loretta Frazier of Whitehall sent along today's recipe.
"I obtained this recipe 38 years ago from the photographer that we had to take pictures at our wedding," she writes. "She served this dessert at their home. We liked it so well I asked for the recipe.
"Anytime I have served this dessert to family or friends, they also want this recipe. It's so good."

Cherry Torte
      1 2/3 c. graham cracker crumbs (26 squares)
      3 T. sugar
      ¼ lb. margarine, melted
      2 envelopes Dream Whip
      1 c. cold milk
      1 t. almond extract
      8 oz. cream cheese, softened
      1 c. confectioners sugar
2 21-oz. cans of ready to use cherry pie filling
      Chopped walnuts

Mix graham cracker crumbs, sugar and margarine and press into a 13-by-9-inch pan. Bake at 375° for eight minutes.

Mix together Dream Whip, milk and almond extract. Set aside.

Mix together cream cheese and confectioners’ sugar. Combine with the Dream Whip mixture. Spread half of the cream mixture over the graham cracker crust. Place cherry pie filling over cream mixture. Cover with the second half of the cream mixture. Garnish with chopped walnuts. Chill before serving. Yields 12 servings.

Clearing the Record
Because of an editor’s error, a step that called for combining the Dream Whip and cream cheese mixtures was originally omitted from this recipe. The recipe above is now correct.
