February 2, 2005Numerous cases of the flu force school to closeByRecord-Eagle staff writer ELLSWORTH - The village's public schools shut down after a nasty flu bug kept 20 percent of the students home. "I can't remember the last time we had to do this," school board president Chester Drenth said Tuesday. The school is closed today and a boys basketball game in Ellsworth with Central Lake was canceled Tuesday night and rescheduled for Monday, Superintendent James Emery said. Custodial workers, along with teacher and staff volunteers, were to spend today disinfecting the school building, he said. The 235-student district had 37 children out Monday, or about 16 percent of students. On Tuesday the number had jumped to 52 students, or about 22 percent of the student body, Emery said. "We had some students who came to school sick, trying to be troopers and stick it out, but it just wasn't really worth it," he said. Emery said he consulted with Dr. Joshua Meyerson of the Northwest Michigan Community Health Agency before making the call to cancel today's classes. Said Drenth: "We're going to try it again Thursday. It's a day-to-day thing right now."
