TRAVERSE CITY - Marshall Ray Houchin, 59, of Traverse City, died Monday, Jan. 31, 2005, at his home following a sudden illness. The son of the late Leonard and Nola (Jagger) Houchin, he was born Nov. 13, 1945, in Kokomo, Ind., and was later raised on a farm in Greenville, Ind. On Dec. 4, 1976, in Louisville, Ky., he married the former Dixie Y. Lewis. At the age of twenty one, Marshall lost his eyesight but never lost his ability to maintain a quality lifestyle. He gained much independence after he received his first leader dog, which definitely enabled him to broaden his horizons. He was a very dedicated husband and father, and took great pride in the fact that he was always gainfully employed. For eleven years he was employed by the Grand Traverse Resort as a stewarding supervisor. At the resort, Marshall was extremely well liked and had the philosophy that he didn't require anything from his coworkers that he wasn't willing to do himself. He later was employed at Chili's Bar and Grill, and most recently at the Cracker Barrel Old Country Store. Marshall, along with his wife, Dixie, were longtime members of the Greater Life Apostolic Church, where he was baptized in Jesus' name in 1986. Marshall enjoyed talking on the phone and his frequent rides on the Bata Bus. He was affectionately known as the man with few limitations. Survivors include his wife, Dixie of Traverse City; daughter, Jeanie Marie (John) Chandler of Traverse City; son, Jesse Houchin of Traverse City; and his precious granddaughter, Olivia Rose. He is also survived by their Jamaican daughter, Jennifer; brother, Steven (Veronica) Dishman of Corydon, Ind.; several nieces and nephews; as well as his best friend, Carl (Gloria) Onstott of Marengo, Ind., who was like a brother to him. Friends may call at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home today, Feb. 3, 2005, from 5 to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held at the funeral home on Friday, Feb. 4, 2005, at 1 p.m., with the Rev. D. Kevin Willis and the Rev. Earl Carrier officiating. Private burial services will be held at a later date in Indiana. In remembrance of Marshall, memorials may be directed to the Greater Life Apostolic Church, 4288 US 31 South, Traverse City, MI 49684. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home
