      TRAVERSE CITY - Lester Sidney Crain, 83, of Traverse City, died Friday, Feb. 4, 2005, at Bortz Healthcare.
      Lester was a 1939 graduate of Traverse City High School, and served with the United States Army during World War II.
      He was a painter and decorator for sixty-five years in Traverse City, working in many homes, especially on Sixth St. He was also an excellent woodworker.
      He was a life-long member of the Emmanuel United Methodist Church, where he was always very active and enjoyed singing with the male Quartet as well as in the choir.
      Born Feb. 11, 1921, in Traverse City, he was the son of Clarence and Sylvia (Groesser) Crain. On June 17, 1941, in Traverse City, he married Ella L. Williams who survives. Also surviving is his daughter, Linda (Sheldon) Penney of Saginaw; son, Art Crain of Kingsley; two sisters, Wanda Gray and Wava Ronk, both of Traverse City; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
      He was preceded in death by a son, Stephen, in 1995; sister, Leona Buck; and brother, Donald.
      Friends may call today, Feb. 6, 2005, from 4 to 6 p.m., at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home. Services will be Monday, Feb. 7, 2005, at 12 p.m., at Emmanuel United Methodist Church, with visitation one hour prior to the service. The Rev. Doug Pedersen will officiate. Burial will take place at the Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens.
      Memorials may be directed to either the Activity Department at Bortz Healthcare or to the Traverse Bay United Methodist Church Building Program.
     
      WOODLAND PARK, Colo. - Harlan D. Yeager, 92, of Woodland Park, Colo., formerly of the Sun City West, Ariz., Traverse City and Ann Arbor passed away on Jan. 1, 2005, in the company of family members and caregivers. His Heavenly Father blessed him with good health and a sharp mind to the very end of his life. United with his Lord and beloved wife of 62 years, Lucy, may Harlan's eternal life abundantly exceed his earthly life.
      He was born on April 1, 1912, in Legonier, Ind., to Albert E. and Cannie C. (Ford) Yeager. He married Lucille A. Sondern on July 11, 1936, in Evansville, Ind. Together they leave a legacy with three children, John A. Yeager of Traverse City, Richard L. Yeager of La Porte, Minn. and Carol S. Warren of Woodland Park, Colo.; plus seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
      He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, three sisters and his loving wife.
      Harlan helped to form and eventually owned Auto Parts Company, Inc. of Ann Arbor. After selling the business and retiring in 1967, he and Lucille moved to Scottsdale, Ariz., and then to the Sun City area, where they resided during the winter months, while enjoying their summers on beautiful Lake Leelanau near Cedar. Eventual full time residency in Sun City West, Ariz., in 1997 was followed by their 2003 relocation to Colorado.
      A man who shared his good fortune with the communities and institutions that touched his life; he will also be remembered for his affiliations and contributions to the Ann Arbor Exchange Club, BPO Elks, the Masons and the Shriners.
      Internment will be at Forest Home Cemetery in Milwaukee, Wis. A summer memorial service at Omena Presbyterian Church is planned and notice will be given.

      TRAVERSE CITY - Ethel Suzanne Sarya, 91, passed away Friday, Feb. 4, 2005, at Indian Trail Adult Foster Care.
      Ethel was born in Ahmeek on July 21, 1913, to John Petaja and Sanna Edla (Savunen) Petaja.
      Ethel worked for several years in Detroit at Burrough's Adding Machine Company, and was an avid gardener. She was an active member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Detroit and Traverse City. Ethel was the first ice skate rental person, along with her husband, Arne, at the Glacier Dome in Traverse City, and also helped out at the Sarya Orthodontic practice.
      Ethel loved her family very much. She is survived by her son, Arnold (Connie) Sarya; grandchildren, Rebecca (Paul) Saleh, Arne (Caroline) Sarya, Ann (John) Hern, John (Lori) Sarya, and David (Gwen) Sarya and Daniel (Julie) Sarya. She was known as GiGi by her great-grandchildren, Laura, Eric, Anna and Justin Saleh, Michael, Margaret, Jack and Patrick Hern, Cullen Jamieson, and Matthew Sarya and Luke Sarya. She is also survived by her sister, Ann (Ray) Hupfer; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
      Ethel was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Arne Edwin Sarya in 1978; parents; brothers, Uno and John Petaja; and sisters, Helen Warner and Pearl Radtke.
      Ethel loved to dance the polka and was an avid hockey fan. She was known for her endless energy. She truly enjoyed and was thankful for her many friends, neighbors and family times together.
      To all she knew, she was everybody's "Gramma" and always had her door open for anyone to stop by and have a cookie and coffee. She will be missed greatly by many, especially her family.
      Her family wishes to thank all those who assisted her in her later years.
      Friends may call Monday, Feb. 7, 2005, from 6 to 8 p.m., at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home. Services will be held Tuesday, Feb. 8, 2005, at 11 a.m., at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Paul Kuhlman officiating. Burial will be in Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens.
      In remembrance of Ethel, memorials may be considered to Bethlehem Lutheran Church or Gideons International.
     
      TRAVERSE CITY - Loyeda "Loy" Krause, 70, of Traverse City, died Friday, Feb. 4, 2005, at Grand Traverse Pavilions. She was born in Allen Park on June 10, 1934, the daughter of Edward A. and Alice C. (Light) Krause.
      Loyeda spent over 30 years in the banking business, starting at the Traverse City State Bank, and retiring from the Troy Security National Bank.
      She was an avid reader and enjoyed watching TV. She also was very fond of her dogs.
      Loy is survived by her sister Vivian (James) Ockert; sister-in-law, Sandra Krause, both of Traverse City; and numerous nieces and nephews.
      She was preceded in death by her parents; three sisters, Betty Carr, Evelyn Witt and Alma Kemp; and her brother, Edward Krause.
      Visitation will be held on Monday, Feb. 7, 2005, from 2 to 4 p .m. and 6 to 8 p.m., from the Covell Funeral Homes. A funeral service will be held Tuesday, Feb. 8, 2005, at noon, also at the funeral home, with additional visitation from 10 am. until the time of service. Pastor Timothy J. Brand will officiate. Burial will take place in Oakwood Cemetery in Traverse City.
      Arrangements have been entrusted to the Covell Funeral Homes in Traverse City.
     
      TRAVERSE CITY - Ella E. Rosengren, 88, of Traverse City, died Friday, Feb. 4, 2005, at Grand Traverse Pavilions. Formerly of Muskegon and Saginaw, Ella retired from General Motors in 1981.
      She was a member of the Eagles Club in Muskegon, where she was active and held several offices.
      Ella enjoyed traveling and was proud that she had visited 48 of our 50 states. She also was proud that she completed high school in Muskegon at the age of 65. After retirement, she became an accomplished painter and wood carver.
      Born Dec. 26, 1916, in Gilcrest, she was the daughter of John and Laurel (Wallington) Grover.
      Survivors include two sons, Frank (Joanne) Rosengren of Elk Rapids and Riddell (Karla) Rosengren of St. Marys, Ga.; sister, Lottie Spikerman of Birch Run; eight grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
      She was preceded in death by her brother, Arthur Grover.
      Memorial services will be held Saturday, Feb. 12, 2005, at noon, at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home. Burial will take place in the spring at the Lake City Cemetery.
      Memorials may be directed to the Women's Resource Center.
     
      TRAVERSE CITY - Gerard Thomas Schwartz, 39, of Traverse City, died Wednesday, Feb. 02, 2005. Born Oct. 7, 1965, in Detroit, he was the son of Thomas Gerard and Linda (Bell) Schwartz. On Sept. 4, 1993, in Honor, he married Vicki Derusha.
      Gerard was employed as a certified public accountant for Jarvis, Kindlinger, Shumsky and Quigley, P.C., in Traverse City.
      He enjoyed bowling and was an avid Red Wing and NASCAR spectator. He was a bowling coach for Traverse City West Senior High School and a pit crew member for his brother, Matt Schwartz, in the Michigan Modifieds.
      Gerard is survived by his wife, Vicki; daughter, Kaitlin; parents, Thomas and Linda Schwartz; sister, Teresa Schwartz; brother, Matthew (Mary) Schwartz; nephew, Nathan McKenzie; grandmother, Elizabeth Bell; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.
      Gerard was preceded in death by his brother, Timothy Martin Schwartz; grandfather, Robert Bell; and grandparents, Henrietta and William Schwartz.
      Visitation will take place Wednesday, Feb. 9, 2005, from noon until 1 p.m., at the Woodside Wesleyan Church, 6789 Ole White Dr. (County Road 610), Lake Ann, where a memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Pastor Daniel Shipton will officiate.
      In lieu of floral arrangements, a college fund has been set up, payable to Kaitlin Schwartz College Fund, c/o Jarvis, Kindlinger, Shumsky and Quigley, P.C., 3399 Veterans. Drive, Traverse City, MI 49684.

      MIDLAND - Franklin J. Riggle, 88, of Midland, celebrated life from Oct. 5, 1916, until Feb. 1, 2005. He was born in Green Bay, Wis., the only child of Frank C. and Bertha Riggle.
      Franklin grew up in the Mt. Pleasant area, moved to Midland with his wife, Virginia Dowling in 1949, and continued there, working at Dow Corning Corporation until his retirement.
      He and Virginia moved to Traverse City in 1979. Following Virginia's death in 2001, Franklin returned to Midland and enjoyed his time at Riverside Place Apartments.
      Franklin was very proud of his service in the Army Corps of Engineers during World War II. He spent several years in Alaska and then went into battle in Normandy.
      He enjoyed debating politics and was an active participant and local leader in the United Steelworkers of America Labor Union. Franklin was also an avid gardener and reader. He was active in sports his entire life, first participating, and later attending all of his children's and grandchildren's events.
      Franklin is survived by his children, Mimi Bruder of Traverse City and Frank W. (Ellen) Riggle of Midland; his grandchildren, Matthew Bruder of Traverse City, Anne Bruder of Chapel Hill, N.C., Molly Bruder of Minneapolis, Minn.; Jason (Karin) Surratt of Traverse City, Sarah (Jr.) Saluta of Traverse City, Adrienne (Scott) Oakley of Roswell, Ga., Alyssia Riggle of Atlanta, Ga.; Zachary Riggle and Shelby Riggle, Midland; great-grandchildren, Felicity Hector-Bruder, Jake and Taylor Oakley, Nathan Surratt and Clara Salutta, all survive him. Franklin's special friend, Evelyn Cook of Midland also survives him.
      A memorial in Franklin's name will be established with the Midland Public Schools at H.H. Dow High School for the Boys' and Girls' Tennis Teams. Memorials may be sent to: Riggle Memorial Fund, Midland Public Schools, Business Office, 600 E. Carpenter Street, Midland, MI 48640.       TRAVERSE CITY - Esther Lucille Whiteford, 80, of Acme, died peacefully at her home Friday, Feb. 4, 2005. She was born April 4, 1924, in Traverse City.
      A life-long resident of Traverse City, Esther worked at Woolworths and Ben Franklin in downtown Traverse City for 25 years, and was a member of East Bay Calvary Church. She loved to cook and sew
      Surviving is her son, Donald Whiteford of Acme; a cousin, Iris (Roger) Smith of Lansing; and special friends, Mary Pollard, Diane Vertican and Lynda Dennis.
      She was preceded in death by her husband, William in 1977; father, Charles Dutton Sr.; sister, Maybelle Round; and a brother, Charles Dutton Jr.
      Visitation will be on Monday, Feb. 7, 2005, from 6 to 8 p.m., at Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City. Funeral Services will be held at East Bay Calvary Church in Traverse City at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 8, with Pastor Kendall Dennis officiating.

      INTERLOCHEN - Sylvernis "Bernie" Leslie Wilson, 83, of Interlochen, died Friday, Feb. 4, 2005, at his residence.
      He was born Oct. 12, 1921, in Oviatt, the son of Frank and Sarah (Peck) Wilson. When he was seventeen, he served in the Civilian Conservation Corps.
      Bernie had co-owned and operated Wilson's Garage and Body Shop from 1958 until his retirement in 1995.
      He attended Woodside Wesleyan Church in Lake Ann, and he enjoyed working on and painting automobiles, especially jeeps. Bernie also loved hunting and fishing.
      On Aug. 8, 1942, in Traverse City, Bernie married Gladys Violet Clark, who survives him. He is also survived by his son, Loren (Rita) Wilson of Maple City; daughter, Noreen (Richard) Henry of Benzonia; daughter-in-law, Linda Wilson of Interlochen; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; sister, Elsie Starkey of Traverse City; two brothers, Arvid (Gladys) Wilson of Traverse City and George (Hazel) Wilson of Farwell; and numerous nieces and nephews.
      Bernie was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Wesley Wilson; one great-grandson, Joshua Robotham; and three brothers, Edward, Dennis and Elmer Wilson.
      Visitation will be held Monday, Feb. 7, 2005, from 6 to 8 p.m., at the Bennett-Barz Funeral Home in Beulah. Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday, Feb. 8, 2005, at 2 p.m., also at the funeral home, with the Reverend Daniel Shipton officiating. Interment will be in the Inland Township Cemetery in the spring.
      Memorial contributions may be made to Woodside Wesleyan Church or to Munson Hospice.
