Arrangements are being handled by the Mancelona Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes. MARIE NICHOLS, 86, of Custer Township, died Friday, Feb. 11, 2005, at her home. Visitation will take place on Tuesday, Feb. 15, 2005, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m., at the Mancelona Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes, where a rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. A funeral Mass will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 16, 2005, at 11 a.m., at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Mancelona. MICHAEL PATTERSON O'CONNOR, 60, of Lake Leelanau, passed away Wednesday evening, Feb. 9, 2005, at Munson Medical Center. There will be a Celebration of Life service held on Saturday, Feb. 19, 2005, at 3 p.m., at the Leland Methodist Church, with Pastor Joseph Graybil officiating. Burial will be in the spring at Beechwood Cemetery in Leland. The family has entrusted Oak Grove Cremation Center of Manistee with arrangements. JAMES L. SPENCELEY, 79, of Traverse City, died Saturday, Feb. 12, 2005, at home. Per James' request, there will be no services at this time. Cremation will take place at Oak Grove Cemetery in Manistee. The family has entrusted funeral arrangements to Oak Grove Cremation Center. DALE EDWARD WILLIAMS, 69, of Edwardsburg, formerly of Antrim County, died Friday, Feb. 11, 2005, at his home. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held Tuesday, Feb. 15, 2005, at noon, at Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church. Arrangements are by the Paul E. Mayhew Funeral Home in Edwardsburg. GLADYS WOLF, 82, died Saturday, Feb. 12, 2005, at Munson Medical Center. A full obituary will follow in Monday's edition of the Record-Eagle. Arrangements are being handled by the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home. GENESEO - Floyd E. Hubbard Jr., 85, of Ripley, died Wednesday Feb. 9, 2005, at his daughter's home in Geneseo. He was born March 10, 1919, in Ripley, a son of the late Floyd D. and Zenn Hewitt Hubbard. He had attended Ripley Central School and was a World War II veteran, serving with the United States Navy from 1944 to 1946. He had owned and operated F. Hubbard Trucking in Ripley from 1936 until his retirement in 1977. He was a life member of the Ripley Hose Co., and former Fire Commissioner, a life member of the American Legion, former Town Councilman, and a member of the Moose Lodge #118. He enjoyed fishing, camping and golfing. He is survived by his second wife, Virginia Newkirk of Traverse City; two sons, Robert Lee (Betty) Hubbard of Mt. Vernon, Ohio, and Eugene (Debbie) Hubbard of Ripley; three daughters, Betty (Jack) Foster of Pasadena, Md., Eleanora "Shorty" Belson of Ripley and Charlene Gross of Geneseo; 13 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren; a stepson, Jack Wise of Traverse City; and four stepdaughters, Dianne Coffmen of Kalamazoo, Pat Raush, Sharon Newberry and Penny Wise, all of Traverse City. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Esther Abby Hubbard in 1985; a brother, Devillo Hubbard in 1997; a sister, Rowena Scott in 1996; and three grandchildren. Friends may call at the Mathews Funeral Home, Inc., 104 West Main Street, in Ripley, today, Feb. 13, 2005, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m., and are invited to attend the services there on Monday, Feb. 14, 2005, at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Les Drayer officiating. Interment will be held privately in the Quincy Cemetery. TRAVERSE CITY - Creighton Albert "Bud" Wagener, M.D., passed away peacefully at home Saturday, Feb. 12, 2005, in the company of his family. He was born July 29, 1924, in Detroit, the son of Sarah Catherine (Durbin) and Albert Mathias Wagener. On May 1, 1948, in Detroit, he married Lydia K. "Kit" Kennedy. A graduate of the University of Detroit and Wayne State University, Dr. Wagener received his degree as a medical doctor, specializing in obstetrics and gynecology. He served his residencies in the Detroit area and then became affiliated as an OB/GYN practitioner with Munson Medical Center in 1955, a career that would span 36 years when he retired in 1991. During his tenure at Munson, Dr. Wagener was one of the founding physicians/partners of the Beaumont Building. Dr. Wagener was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, served on the Munson Medical Center Board of Trustees from 1967-1978, serving as their president for one year, was a member of the Munson Healthcare Board, the Catholic Service Bureau Board, the Grand Traverse Area Catholic School Board from 1969 to 1974, serving as its president in 1970 and 1971, was a member of the Traverse City Golf and Country Club and served on their board, as well as serving as president in 1983. He particularly enjoyed playing golf, bowling and bridge. Survivors include his children, Donna (Tony) Brakel and Jim Wagener, all of Traverse City; grandchildren, Jennifer (John) Dobbins of Collegeville, Pa., Sandy Brakel of Traverse City and Melissa and Austin Wagener, also of Traverse City. Bud is survived by his brothers, Richard (Carol) Wagener of Pennsylvania and William (Phyllis) Wagener of Wisconsin. He was preceded in death by his wife, Kit, on Dec. 23, 1995; parents; and a brother, Francis. The funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 16, 2005, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Visitation will take place at the church beginning one hour prior to the service. At Bud's request, cremation has taken place and burial will take place in Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens. TRAVERSE CITY - Jack Leonard Wilkinson, 89, died Friday, Feb. 11, 2005, at Munson Medical Center. Jack was born on June 2, 1915, in Detroit, to Thomas and Cecelia (Schneider) Wilkinson. When he was 15, his mother and stepfather, George Harms, moved the family to Houston. Jack graduated from the John Reagon High School in Houston in 1932, and shortly thereafter he and his family moved back to Detroit. He attended the University of Michigan and Hillsdale College. In 1936 he became a partner with his stepfather in a carpet store in downtown Detroit. He married Ellen Hyner on Oct. 1, 1938, in Ferndale, and in 1954, they moved with their three children to Traverse City. Ellen preceded him in death on April 25, 1979. In 1980, Jack moved to Santa Rosa, Calif., to be near his elderly mother. In July of 1981, he married Alice Woodmanse, who died on Nov. 13, 2004. At that time, Jack decided to return to Traverse City, which he did on Dec. 1, 2004. Jack was ingenious, imaginative, and multi-talented. He was a championship swimmer and baseball player, a saxophonist, horseshoe player and gifted artist. He could solve jumble puzzles in less than two minutes, cook gourmet meals at a moments notice, and entertain large and small audiences for hours with his amazing magic tricks. He was a super salesman and a creative entrepreneur, having founded both Country Squire Men's Wear and Benjamin Twiggs Cherry products. A former member of Kiwanis and Optimists Clubs in California and Michigan, Jack was always involved in the service projects of the clubs. A lover of animals, Jack could instantly tame the angriest of dogs, having them wagging their tails within minutes, and in a short period of time have them doing tricks. But most of all, he was a loyal friend, a wonderful father, and a caring, loving husband. In addition to his wives, Jack was preceded in death by his parents and stepfather, two sisters and a brother. He is survived by his son, Thomas Wilkinson of Ann Arbor; his daughters, Suzy (Dean) Ringsmuth, and Jane (Norman) Fred of Traverse City; and his stepdaughter, Marian (Gregory) Brott of Sacramento, Calif.; his grandchildren, Blake (Yvette) Ringsmuth of Traverse City, David Fred of Traverse City, Ellen (Robert) Fred-Martel of Alameda, Calif., Zachary Wilkinson of Ann Arbor, Jacob Wilkinson of Olympia, Wash., and Nicholas Wilkinson of Huntington Beach, Calif.; his step-grandchildren, Heidi (Daniel) Larsen of Missoula, Mont., and Nathan (Alicia) Brott of Grass Valley, Calif.; his great-grandchildren, Sage and Tristan Ringsmuth; and his step great-grandchildren, Jacob, Jack and Sophie Larsen and Ryan, Ivy and Benjamin Brott; and many nieces and nephews. According to his wishes, Jack was cremated. A memorial service will be held Wednesday, Feb. 16, at 11 a.m., at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Traverse City. Visitation will be at the church beginning one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Endowment Fund of Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 1050 Peninsula Drive, Traverse City, MI 49686. We'll miss you, buddy. The family is being served by The Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home. WILLIAMSBURG - Rodney A. Windish, 52, of Williamsburg, died suddenly as a result of an industrial accident at work in Traverse City on Thursday, Feb. 10, 2005. He was employed as an electrician/mechanic, and was well liked by his co-workers. Rodney was born Sept. 8, 1952, in Bellaire, to Geraldine Windish and the late Paul Windish. He grew up close to Finch Creek near Alden. He loved his family dearly. Vicky, his wife of 32 years; his children, Rodney (Stephanie) Windish and Heather (Jamie) Cooley; and his grandchildren, Kayla, Paige, Kimber, Emme and Ava were the light of his life. Rodney was a loving and kind man, especially with his children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Rodney had a gentle soul with the gift of listening, and had an understanding of the way children think about the world. He had great patience with them and was rewarded with unwavering love and affection. He was a wonderful "Dad," Papa," "Grandpa" and "Uncle Rod." Rodney also loved the outdoors, especially boating, swimming, deer hunting and mushrooming. He loved watching sunsets over East Bay. Rodney loved the Lord, and we know he is with Him now. He is survived by a large family of brothers, brothers-in-law, sisters, sisters-in-law, mother, Gerry Windish; mother-in-law, Virginia Miller; and father-in-law, Donald Miller. He will be deeply missed. Visitation will be today, Feb. 13, 2005, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m., at the Mancelona Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes. Funeral services will be held Monday, Feb. 14, 2005, at 5 p.m., also at the funeral home. A meal will be provided for family and friends following the funeral services at the Antrim Church of Christ, south of Mancelona on US 131. FRANKFORT - Edith Zapf, 100, of Frankfort, died at the Maples on Sunday, Feb. 6, 2005. She was born Jan. 24, 1905, in Constantine, the daughter of the late Bert and Stella Comstock. Edith graduated from Michigan State College in 1927. She taught in the Detroit Public Schools until her marriage on Nov. 28, 1946, to William Zapf, who preceded her in death. She was a life-long member of the Congregational Church in Traverse City and Frankfort, as well as a member of Lakeside Literacy Club and the Eastern Star. Edith was a charter member of Kappa Alpha Theta Sorority at the Michigan State University. For many years, Edith and William spent winters in warmer climates, such as Hawaii, Charleston, S.C. and Las Vegas. Edith is survived by cousins. A graveside service will be held in the spring. The Frankfort Chapel of McElduff Funeral Home and Cremation Service is handling the arrangements.
