The Edwards Oak Grove Home of Bear Lake is serving the family. DELILAH I. KOCH, 86, of Kalkaska, died Saturday, Jan. 1, 2005, at Kalkaska Memorial Health Center Long Term Care. Visitation will be Monday, Jan. 3, 2005, from 4 to 6 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m., at the Wolfe Funeral Home in Kalkaska. A funeral service will be held Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2005, at 1 p.m., also at the funeral home. Burial will be in Excelsior Township. Arrangements are by the Wolfe Funeral Home of Kalkaska. THOMAS HENRY STEVENSON, 21, of Frederic, died Friday, Dec. 31, 2004, in Grayling. Visitation will be today, Jan. 2, 2005, from 2 to 6 p.m., at the Sorenson-Lockwood Funeral Home in Grayling. Funeral services will be held Monday, Jan. 3, 2005, at 3 p.m., at the Michelson Memorial United Methodist Church, where visitation will be held from 1 p.m. until the time of service. Arrangements are by the Sorenson-Lockwood Funeral Home in Grayling. BUCKLEY - Jason Michael Ledford, 15, of Buckley, formerly of Bear Lake, died at his home on Thursday, Dec. 30, 2004. He was born on June 11, 1989, in Manistee, the son of Jack William and Joan Marie (Babcock) Ledford. Jason was a student at Buckley High School and worked at Glenwood Restaurant in Onekama. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Bear Lake. Jason enjoyed reading and music. He also enjoyed sports, including soccer, basketball, baseball and skiing, but his favorite sport was football. He is survived by his parents, Jack and Joan Ledford of Buckley; five brothers, John, James, Joshua, Joel and Jackson; and one sister, Jemima, all at home; maternal grandparents, Robert and Judy Babcock of Bear Lake; paternal grandparents, John "Bill" and Barb Ledford of Bear Lake; 10 aunts and uncles, Tim and Karen Babcock, Julie and Derek Bartlett, Joe and Connie Ledford, Debbie and Scott Sedlar, all of Bear Lake, and Steve and Tammy Ledford of Perkins, Okla.; 14 cousins, Rachel, Loretta, Bailey, Lee, Nicole, Lewis, Sara, Kelly, Ivy, Lindsey, Shania, Levi, Wade and Naysa. Jason was preceded in death by his sibling, Jordan Ledford. A celebration of Jason's life will be held on Monday, Jan. 3, 2005, at 10 a.m., from the Buckley High School gymnasium, with Pastor Al Decatur officiating. Inurnment will take place later in Pleasanton Township Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Jason's name to the First Baptist Church Youth Ministry or the Buckley Gospel Tabernacle Church Youth Ministry. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Covell-Smith Funeral Homes in Kingsley. TRAVERSE CITY - Helen Catherine Gould, 92, of Traverse City, formerly of Battle Creek, died Thursday, Dec. 30, 2004, at home in Traverse City. She was born Aug. 28, 1912, in Springfield, Ore., to Catherine (Heether) and Edward Zuber. She received her master's degree in social work from the University of Michigan and worked for a number of years as an intake worker at Burca of Social Aid. After completing her master's of arts degree she worked for many years as a school social worker, serving the Springfield and Lakeview school systems. A grass roots social worker, Helen was highly dedicated to her work. Helen was compassionate in her work and possessed a good sense of humor. Her life typified the saying, "May charity be the root and foundation of your life." She is survived by Virginia (Will) Willsey of Traverse City and five step grandchildren. In 1938 she married Raymond Gould, who preceded her in death, as did a sister, Rose Zuber. Friends may call Monday, Jan. 3, 2005, at the Shaw Funeral Home in Battle Creek, where family will be present from 4 to 6 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2005, at 10 a.m., at St. Philip Catholic Church in Battle Creek, with the Rev. Fr. Charles Fischer officiating. Interment will be in the Memorial Park Cemetery. Memorials may go to the Humane Society for the Calhoun Area. TRAVERSE CITY - Mortimer Campbell Smythe III, of Traverse City, passed away peacefully at Munson Medical Center on Friday, Dec. 31, 2004. Born Aug. 23, 1927, in Ann Arbor, he was the son of M. C. Smythe II and Rena Gee Smythe. A veteran of World War II, Mort served our country in the U.S. Navy. On October 3, 1947, he married Donna Madge Helsel in Flint. They had five children, Shaunne (Rob) Szostowski, Mort (Lucy) Smythe IV, Syndee (Bill) Borst, Scott (Tamara) Smythe and Kevin Smythe. Also surviving are his grandchildren, Kylee Orth, Anna, Dylan and Emma Smythe, Tony (Maryruth) Stubbs, Briar Rose (Todd) and Jacob Smythe; and great-grandchildren, Lexis and Nicholas Orth and Alec Harris. One foster brother, Larry Brooks, also survives. Mort was preceded in death by his wife, Donna, on March 13, 2003; his parents; brothers, James, John, Dohn and foster brother, Lorne Brooks. A private family Mass will be held. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Alzheimer's and Related Diseases Foundation or the American Kidney Foundation. The family was served by The Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home. KALAMAZOO - Mrs. Isabel L. Smith, 90, of Kalamazoo, formerly of Traverse City, died Thursday morning, Dec. 30, 2004. Isabel was born Nov. 3, 1914, in Petoskey, a daughter of Hiram and Margaretha (Brecheisen) Starmer. She had been a Kalamazoo area resident for two years, coming from Traverse City. She was employed with the Lansing Public Schools as a reading specialist for 30 years before retiring. She is survived by a son and his wife, Gary and Beth Smith of Portage; two grandchildren, Casey and Steven Smith, both of Portage; a sister, Gladys Baker of North Carolina; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Henry Smith on Jan. 18, 2003; and five sisters, Elsie, Maude, Dorothy, Geneva and Genevieve. In accordance with her wishes, cremation has taken place. There will be no visitation. Services in Traverse City will be announced at a later date. Inurnment of cremains will be in St. Joseph Catholic Church Cemetery, Traverse City. Memorials may be directed to the American Cancer Society or Hospice of Greater Kalamazoo.
