      BETTY J. HAYES, 78, of Bellaire, died Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2005, at Meadow Brook Medical Care Facility in Bellaire.
      Funeral services will be held in Livonia.
      Local arrangements were handled by the Bellaire Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes.
     
      VERA M. NEMESKAL of Maple City died Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2005, at Munson Medical Center.
      Arrangements are pending with the Martinson Funeral Home of Suttons Bay.
     
      WESTMINSTER, Colo. - Benny J. Lautner, a loving husband and father, Benny was born in Traverse City on Nov. 29, 1958. Ben passed away on Dec. 16, 2004, in his home in Westminster, Colo., after a long struggle with cancer.
      He is survived by his wife, Linda; daughters, Rebecca and Kathryn; parents, Cletus and Marie Lautner; siblings, Bernie (Barb) Lautner, (Wanda Lautner), Bonnie (Dennis) Ackerman, Donna (Ricky) Pringle and Doug (Kris) Lautner; and numerous nieces and nephews.
      He was preceded in death by his brother, David.
      A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Jan. 8, 2005, at 10 a.m., at Spirit of Christ Catholic Community Church, 7400 W. 80th Ave., Arvada, CO 80003. A memorial service is also planned for the spring in Traverse City.
      In lieu of flowers, Ben's wishes were to have a college fund for Becky and Kathy. Donations may be sent to Spirit of Christ Catholic Community Church.
     
      TRAVERSE CITY - Charlotte Alice Mapes, 95, of Traverse City, went home to be with her Lord and her husband, Kenneth, on Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2005, after a long and patient wait.
      Born July 11, 1909, in Detroit, she was the daughter of Christian and Anna (Yergensen) Nelson. On May 7, 1931, in Detroit, she married Kenneth Mapes.
      A retired receptionist, Charlotte had been a resident of Traverse City since 1968. She was member of the First Presbyterian Church of Elk Rapids, and was previously active with the Munson Medical Center Auxiliary.
      Throughout her life, Charlotte enjoyed flower gardening, handicrafts and spending time with her husband. She always desired to make people happy and their lives easier.
      She is survived by her daughter, Ann Mapes of Traverse City.
      Charlotte was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Kenneth; and sister, Katherin Smith.
      Funeral services will be held Saturday, Jan. 8, 2005, at 2 p.m., at the Covell Funeral Home in Traverse City, with visitation one hour prior to the service. The Rev. Daniel Herlein will officiate. Interment will be in Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens.
      Memorial contributions may be directed to the First Presbyterian Church of Elk Rapids. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
      Arrangements have been entrusted to the Traverse City Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes.
     
      INTERLOCHEN - Lauren E. McDowell, 19, of Interlochen, died Saturday, Jan. 1, 2005, at her home. She was born Dec. 24, 1985, in Traverse City, the daughter of Scott and Sandra (Chavalia) McDowell.
      A volunteer at the Cherryland Humane Society in Traverse City, Lauren was previously employed at Skilled Manufacturing in Traverse City.
      Lauren is survived by her parents, Scott McDowell of Interlochen and Sandra Chavalia of Kingsley; two brothers, Sgt. Tony (Emily) Chavalia of Kingsley, who serves in Iraq, and Pvt. Chuck McDowell, who serves at Fort Lewis Army Base in Washington; niece, Abigail Chavalia of Kingsley; and many aunts and uncles.
      She was preceded in death by her maternal and paternal grandparents.
      Visitation will be held Friday, Jan. 7, 2005, from 11 to 1 p.m., from the Covell-Smith Funeral Home, where the funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. The Rev. Justin Amenson will officiate.
      Memorials may be directed to the Father Fred Foundation or the Cherryland Humane Society.
      Arrangements have been entrusted to the Covell-Smith Funeral Home in Kingsley.
     
      TRAVERSE CITY - Norman D. Britten of Traverse City died on Saturday, Jan. 1, 2005, at his home.
      Born on Sept. 10, 1930, in Groom, Texas, he was the son of John M. and Louise Britten. He graduated from Groom High School and served four years in the military during the Korean War. He then earned his bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of Detroit and Wayne State University in Detroit.
      On Aug. 17, 1957, at Duns Scotus College in Detroit, he married Jean Ellen Ward, who survives.
      For 25 years he worked for the Michigan Department of Education, in the field of vocational rehabilitation, helping the disabled find employment. Norman was active in the Civil Rights Movement and marched with the Rev. Martin Luther King in Selma, Ala. After retirement from state service he worked for Britten Inc., until recently.
      He wrote numerous letters to the Traverse City Record-Eagle, most having to do with his strong convictions relative to the Right to Life.
      Along with his wife, Jean, Norm is survived by four sons, Charles (Deb), John (Cordie), Paul (Darcy) and Thomas (Connie); two daughters, Therese (Bob) Rhein and Susan (Jim) McManus; 32 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Also surviving are two brothers, Art and Bill; and two sisters, DoraJean Homen and Sr. Mary Louise of Amarillo, Texas.
      He was preceded in death by a son, Stephen; six brothers; and two sisters.
      Visitation for family and friends will be held at Immaculate Conception Church on Friday, Jan. 7, 2005, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m., with a rosary to be prayed at 7:30 p.m. A funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, Jan. 8, 2005, at 11 a.m., at Immaculate Conception Church in Traverse City. Fr. James Hayden and Fr. Michael Janowski will concelebrate. Burial will follow in the Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens.
