January 9, 2005ObituariesBERNARD T. CARROLL, 77, of Old Mission Peninsula, died Saturday morning, Jan. 8, 2005, at home. Arrangements are pending and will be announced by the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City. MARION E. HELMER, 88, of Traverse City, died Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2005, at Birchwood Nursing Center. Funeral services will be announced at a later date. Arrangements are by the Wolfe Funeral Home in Kalkaska. RICHARD E. PECK, 76, of Kalkaska, died Friday, Jan. 7, 2005, at Munson Medical Center. A memorial service will be scheduled at a later time. Arrangements are by the Wolfe Funeral Home in Kalkaska. TRAVERSE CITY - Steven Joseph Berak, 86, of Traverse City, formerly of Madison Heights, died Friday, Jan. 7, 2005, at Munson Hospice House. Born Dec. 7, 1918, in Czecho-Slovakia, Steve was the son of Joseph and Susanna (Novak) Berak. On Aug. 24, 1940, at Saint Stanislaus Catholic Church in Detroit, he married Stella Strus. He worked at General Motors Fisher Body Plant 21 for 33 years. Steve surrounded himself with his family and taught them how to love. He blessed everyone with his time and vibrant spirit, and as a family we loved and honored him. A resident of Traverse City since 1975, Steve was an active member of Saint Francis Catholic Church, where he had previously served as an usher. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus. Steve loved music, played the accordion and had his own band. Throughout his life, Steve enjoyed spending time in the out-of-doors mushrooming, hunting, and fishing and ice fishing at home in his back yard on the Boardman Pond or at the family cottage in Metz. He especially loved gardening vegetables and looking after his fruit trees. Steve spent much time with his wife canning their harvest of fruits, fish, vegetables and homemade sauerkraut. He is survived by his loving wife, Stella; three daughters, Virginia Kuhr of Traverse City, Lorraine (Vern Oxender) Berak of Traverse City and Patty Berak of Center Line; four grandchildren, Suzanne Kuhr of Kalamazoo, Pamela (Ronald) Haag of Clarkston, Brian (Kim) Kuhr of Traverse City and Kristy (Eric) Daigh of Elk Rapids; five great-grandchildren, Michael, Isabel, Nicholes, Kelly and Harper; sister, Ann Skoda of Long Island, N.Y. and Dominican Sister Virginia Berak Mother House Oxford, Michigan. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Joseph. Visitation will be Monday, Jan. 10, 2005, from 3 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m., with a rosary to be prayed at 7 p.m., at the Covell Funeral Home of Traverse City. During the evening visitation Steve will be surrounded by his fellow Knights. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Tuesday, Jan. 11, 2005, at 11 a.m., at Saint Francis Catholic Church, where visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. Interment will be in Resurrection Cemetery in Clinton Township, with burial to take place Wednesday, Jan. 12. For those wishing to give memorials, please remember the Berak family or Mass Intentions. COPEMISH - Lawrence Anthony Rybicki, 57, of Copemish, died Friday, Jan. 7, 2005, at Spectrum Health Reed City Campus. He was born Sept. 26, 1947, in Detroit, the son of Hilary and Margaret (Smith) Rybicki. Lawrence was a veteran of Vietnam, serving in the United States Marine Corps. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, but his passion was horses. Lawrence is survived by his parents, Hilary and Margaret Rybicki of Copemish; sister, Janette Hendrick of Traverse City; and three nieces and nephews, Jess, Jason and Jennifer Rybicki. A memorial Mass from the Order of Christian Funerals will be celebrated at 11 a.m., Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2005, at St. Raphael Catholic Church in Copemish, with Father Richard Kosterman serving as celebrant. The Terwilliger Funeral Home in Kaleva is in charge of arrangements. LANSING - Benita Core Smith died Monday, Jan. 3, 2005, in the presence of her family in Lansing. Born in Traverse City in December of 1916, to Oscar and Brida Core, Bennie spent her childhood in Lansing. She was a 1938 graduate of Michigan State College, and later that year married Lawrence John Smith of Lake Odessa. Bennie was an active and supportive wife while her husband fought on the European Front during the Second World War. After the war the Smiths settled in Lake Odessa, where Larry managed the Smith Brother's Elevator and Bennie raised their five children. The Smiths were members of St. Edwards Catholic Church in Lake Odessa. In 1984 Bennie retired to California, returning to Lansing again in 2002. She is survived by daughters, Terin of Santa Barbara, Calif. and Bonita Mott of Seattle; sons, Lawrence of Lake Odessa, David of Lansing, and Bill of New York; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Bennie was predeceased first by her husband, Lawrence, and then their lifetime friend, Thomas Reed of California. Both men were beloved by the Smith family. A commemoration of Bennie's life will be held later in January when the family gathers in Lake Odessa. Arrangements are being handled by the Koops Funeral Chapel in Lake Odessa, Michigan, (616) 374-8221. JACKSON - The Rev. Paul E. Randall, 79, died Friday, Jan. 7, 2005. He is survived by his wife, Ella, and seven children. He was pastor with the Harland Gospel Church and the Homestead Community Church for many years. Visitation will be Monday, Jan. 10, 2005, from 6 to 8 p.m., at the Lansing Avenue Baptist Church in Jackson. Services will be held Tuesday, Jan. 11, at 11 a.m., also at the church. Interment will be in Fort Custer National Cemetery. Contributions, in his memory, are directed to the Lansing Avenue Baptist Church or the Lake Ann Baptist Camp. Arrangements are by the Nichols-Arthur Funeral Home in Michigan Center. ALBA - Ray Miller, 66, of Ray's Guitar in Boyne City, our loving husband and father, passed away at his residence with his family by his side on Friday, Jan. 7, 2005. He is loved and survived by his wife, Peggy Miller; son, Dean Miller, granddaughter, Kristy, grandson, Jesse, and great-grandchildren, Skyler and Hayden; son, Thomas Ray (Joyce) Miller, grandson, Tyler (Dana), and granddaughter, Amanda; daughter, Vicki (Doug) Frolka, and grandchildren, Ray, Evan, and Branden; son, Harold Miller; daughter, Sarah (Eric) Pigg, and grandchildren, Trevor, Ian and Kyle. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Jan. 15, 2005, at 1 p.m., at the Alba School, with a Ray Miller Time jam session to follow. TRAVERSE CITY - Iris Joan Hayes, 82, of Traverse City, previously from Toledo, Ohio, died Friday, Dec. 24, 2004. Born June 5, 1922, in Tiptree, Essex County, England, she was the daughter of Clifford and Kate (Bell) Cottee. On July 19, 1944, in Tiptree, Essex County, England, she married Clyde Mack Hayes. Iris served in the Royal Air Force during World War II, during which time she met and married her husband, coming to America on the Queen Mary. Once married, Iris was a homemaker who enjoyed cooking, especially baking cookies. She also liked to knit and read. She was a member of the Traverse City Church of Christ, being active by helping out on several committees. Survivors include her husband, Clyde Mack; three children, Evelyn (Ray) Deselms of Lambertville, Richard Hayes of Grand Rapids and Jennifer Hayes of Traverse City; three grandchildren, Dorrie, Jessica and Asa; two great-grandchildren; four brothers, George (Betty) Cottee, Tip Cottee, Tony (Ann) Cottee and Robert (Kate) Cottee; and three sisters, Betty Ball, Chris (Pete) Frost and Janet Olley. A celebration of life service will be held Saturday, Jan. 15, 2005, at 1 p.m., at the Traverse City Church of Christ, with Harold Reddick officiating. The family asks those wishing to give memorials to please remember the Traverse City Church of Christ Ghana Ministry Fund. Envelopes will be available at the church.
