Funeral services for RUBY GILMORE, 94, who died Wednesday, Jan 12, 2005, in Bradenton, Fla., will be held Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2005, at 11 a.m., at Old Mission Peninsula United Methodist Church. Visitation will begin one hour prior to the service. Arrangements are by the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home. FREDERICK D. THIEL, 83, of Traverse City, passed away Friday, Jan. 14, 2005. A full obituary will be in Monday's edition of the Record-Eagle. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Covell Funeral Home in Traverse City. THELMA M. THOMPSON, 90, of Mission, Texas, formerly of Central Lake, died Friday, Jan. 14, 2005, at Mission Hospital. Visitation will be Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2005, from 6 to 8 p.m., at the Central Lake Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Jan. 19, at 2 p.m., at Grace Community Church in Central Lake. TRAVERSE CITY - Lana Lynn Crandall, 57, of Traverse City, died Friday, Jan. 14, 2005, at home. She was born Oct. 25, 1947, in Lima, Ohio, the daughter of Glenna May (Williams) and James Thompson Howell. She married Maxwell "Mick" Crandall on July 22, 1972, in Hastings, where she was teaching, after which she moved to Traverse City. A graduate of Rockford High School, where she was homecoming queen and the head cheerleader, Lana continued her education at Central Michigan University, graduating with a major in Art and a minor in English. Lana taught school for a total of 20 years, 16 of those years at Traverse City West Junior High School, where she taught 8th grade English. She was also in charge of the Odyssey of the Mind program for several years. She was a giving person to all who crossed her path. Her children, grandchildren and students gave her a lot of enjoyment, and she was very proud of them. Her brave spirit and love of life was evident through her illness. Lana enjoyed painting, sculpting and drawing. The photo scrap books that she made for every special event the family had will always be cherished. She enjoyed acting at the Old Town Playhouse, having roles in "Steel Magnolias," "The Voice of Emma Fields" and "Other Northern Belles." Her love of the arts, teaching and children inspired her to author and illustrate a children's book, The Crabby Apple. In addition to her husband, Lana is survived by her parents; daughter, Kori Crandall Quinn and her husband, Anthony of East Grand Rapids; their children and her grandchildren, McMillan Anthony Quinn and Crandall Jason Quinn, both of East Grand Rapids; her son, Andrew McMillan Crandall and his fiancee, Emily Bowerman of Seattle; and her brother, Tom (Laurie) Howell of Boyne Falls. Lana was very proud of her children, grandchildren and family. Visitation for Lana will be held at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City on Monday, Jan. 17, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. At the family's request, a private family memorial service will take place with the Rev. Dr. Homer Nye officiating. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery in Traverse City. Memorial contributions may be directed to Munson Medical Center, the Grand Traverse Children's Museum or to a charity of one's choice. SMITHFIELD, N.C. - Sherryl Sue "Sherry" Reuter, 54, died Friday afternoon in Johnston Memorial Hospital. Born July 2, 1950, in Fife Lake, she was a daughter of the late Stuart Douglas and Ardith Marie Birgy Bridson. She was a member of the Pisgah Baptist Church. Surviving are her husband, Allen Reuter; son, Stewart Douglas Hatfield of Muskegon; daughters, Jodi Michelle Westover and husband, Jamie of Marydel Del., Brandy Nichole Reuter of Seattle, Dusti Dawn Reuter, Krysti Lynn Reuter and Laci Lee Reuter, all of the home; brothers, Bruce Bridson of Fife Lake, Todd Bridson of Saginaw and Troy Bridson of Kingsport, Tenn.; sister, Faith Carroll of Pentwater; and one grandson, Colin James "C.J." Westover. A funeral service will be conducted Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2005, at 11 a.m., in the Pisgah Baptist Church, with the Rev. William "Bill" Monroe officiating. The Underwood Funeral Home is assisting the family with service details. NILES - Ruth E. Huffine, 87, died Friday, Jan. 14, 2005, at Orchard Hill Adult Foster Care in Brethren. She was born July 23, 1917, in Carlinville, Ill., the daughter of Andrew and Anna Giffen. On Aug. 27, 1934, Ruth married Malcolm J. Huffine in Carlinville. She was a member of Bertrand Bible Church in Niles. Ruth is survived by her daughter, Anne (Al) Young of Honor; five grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; brother, Andrew Giffen of Troy; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Malcolm in March of 2004; and daughter, Janet L. Njus in August of 2002. Visitation will be Monday, Jan. 17, 2005, from 6 to 8 p.m., at the Benzonia Chapel of McElduff Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Jan. 18, at noon, at the First Congregational Church of Benzonia, with the Rev. Steve Davidson officiating. Interment will be in Platte Township Cemetery in the spring. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Benzonia Congregational Church or the Benzie Baby Pantry. TRAVERSE CITY - Margaret Mareda Hoard Pratt, 101, of Traverse City, died Thursday, Jan. 13, 2005, at Bortz Health Care. Born Dec. 24, 1903, in Marquette, Margaret was the daughter of Arthur Samuel Hoard and Mary Elizabeth Clune Hoard. Educated in the Traverse City Schools, Margaret took employment with the Hannah-Lay Milling Company as a secretary, following graduation from high school. She later was employed in the Traverse City Offices. On Sept. 29, 1928, in Lansing, she married Leonard Pratt. Margaret was a long-time member of First Congregational Church, and was very active in the activities of the church. She loved to play cards and was an avid knitter. Her greatest joys were her love and involvement in the lives of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Surviving are two daughters, Shirley (Gale) Gleason of Sault Ste. Marie and Elizabeth (Glenn) VanRiper of Traverse City; six grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. Margaret was preceded in death by her husband in 1985; her parents; and siblings, Frank Hoard, Hazel Hoard, John Hoard and Bertha Hoard Blackburne. Following cremation, burial will take place in Oakwood Cemetery. A memorial service will be held at a later date. The family is being served by the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home. CLINTON TOWNSHIP - Frank (Yankee) Malinowski, 91, born in Hinckley, N.Y., died Sunday, Jan. 9, 2005. He resided in Detroit, joined the Army, and was stationed at Scofield Barracks in Hawaii. Retiring from the postal service in 1972, he moved to Karlin, where he became a member of the Eagles club, volunteered as tutor at the Interlochen grade school and was known affectionately as "Mr. Frank." He moved again to Clinton Township in 1999. He was a beloved husband of Betty for 68 years; loving father of Frank (Beverly) of Boise, Idaho and David (Diana); and dearest grandfather of Darrin, Allan, Brian, Michael and Jeff. The family is grateful to the staff of Medilodge Nursing Home. The family requests that memorials be sent to any wildlife association. TRAVERSE CITY - Marie Gaeth McCarthy, 90, of Traverse City, died Friday, Jan. 14, 2005, at Orchard Creek Nursing Center. Marie was born on June 12, 1914, in Oak Harbor, Ohio, the daughter of Sophena (Millinger) and Charles Gaeth. Following graduation from high school, she attended Bowling Green State Teacher College in Ohio, where she earned her teaching certificate, and then went on to further her education at Middlebury College in Vermont. Marie taught school in East Palestine, Ohio, and Annapolis, Maryland. It was there that she met her husband, Jerry W. McCarthy, who was an officer in the United States Navy. They married on Feb. 22, 1947, in Annapolis. After moving to Traverse City in 1949 from Maryland, Marie became a member of First Congregational Church with her husband. She spent many years working in Grand Traverse and Leelanau Title Companies, which are family-owned, both prior to and subsequent to the death of her husband. She enjoyed reading and was always very interested in current events. She had a special interest in Northwestern Michigan College, where her late husband served on the Board of Trustees. Survivors include her son and his wife, John and Suzanne B. McCarthy of Traverse City; a daughter, Ann, and her husband, Stephen Glickman of Washington, DC; her grandchildren, Spencer and Tyler McCarthy of Traverse City and Justine and Rachel Glickman of Washington, DC. Also surviving are her brother, John Gaeth of Westlake, Ohio; and numerous nieces and nephews. Marie was preceded in death by her husband in 1978, her parents and eight of her siblings. Visitation will take place from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m., Monday, Jan. 17, 2005, at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home. There will be a private memorial service this spring. TRAVERSE CITY - Gerald Bernard "Jerry" Lautner, 91, a life-long resident of Garfield Township, died Friday, Jan. 14, 2005, at Munson Medical Center. Born on the family farm in Garfield Township on Sept. 6, 1913, he was one of four children born to Stephan J. and Maude (Umlor) Lautner. A graduate of Traverse City High School, Jerry married Mary Georgetta Akey on Jan. 24, 1937, at First Congregational Church. A dairy farmer and cherry farmer, Jerry lived on the family farm his entire life, dedicating himself to caring for the family homestead and to being a good steward of the land. In addition to farming, he did carpentry work, having worked on the crew to put the first roof on Building 50 at the State Hospital. He was a member of the Farm Bureau, The Michigan Milk Producers Association and the Cherry Growers Association. He was a proud supporter and member of the Democratic Party as well. Having an endless love of horses, Jerry enjoyed caring for them on the family farm, and especially enjoyed having Belgian Horses. Jerry is survived by his wife of 68 years, Mary; his children, Shirley (Jim) Robertson, Duane (Mary) Lautner and Rosemary (John) Terrell, all of Traverse City; 17 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren, one great-great-granddaughter; and a sister, Rhea Swan of Traverse City. Jerry was preceded in death by his son, Ron in 1989; great-grandchildren, Michael James Lautner and Alison Rose Terrell; brother, Karl; and sister, Lucille Widrig. For the last several years, Jerry has dedicated himself to being his wife Mary's principal caregiver. The family would also like to express their appreciation to Chantelle and Lorraine, who assisted Jerry in caring for Mary. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 19, at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home, with Pastor Dan Ingersoll of Eden Bible Church officiating. Visitation will take place at the funeral home on Tuesday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Burial will take place in Oakwood Cemetery. The family suggests that for those who would desire, memorial contributions in Jerry's name be directed to the American Cancer Society. ELKHART, Ind. - Victoria Lynn "Vickey" Zmudzinski, 47, of Elkhart, Ind., died Thursday, Jan. 13, 2005, at home. Born Dec. 3, 1957, in Traverse City, she was the daughter of James George and Miriam (Linderleaf) Zmudzinski. Vickey graduated from Elkhart Memorial High School in 1975. An avid crusader for animals, Vickey volunteered for the Elkhart County Humane Society and the DNR to raise and release orphaned wild young animals. She also volunteered for the Salvation Army Resale Store. A lover of all people, Vickey loved nature and working in her yard. She is survived by her son, James "Jimmy" Zmudzinski of Elkhart, Ind.; fiancé, Doug Johnson and his sons, Chad and Jeremy, all of Elkhart Ind.; brother, Ken Zmudzinski of Jenison; sister-in-law, Elaine Zmudzinski of Edwardsburg; niece, Lisa Zmudzinski of Edwardsburg; and her beloved dogs, Bengal and Katz. Friends and family may call Monday, Jan. 17, 2005, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m., at the Walley-Mills-Zimmerman Funeral Home and Crematory in Elkhart, Ind., where a vigil service will be held at 3:30 p.m. A funeral service will be held Tuesday, Jan. 18, at 10:30 a.m., at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church, with Fr. Bill Sullivan officiating. Cremation will take place with burial at a later date in Oakridge Cemetery in Bristol, Ind. Memorials may be considered to the Elkhart County Humane Society.
