Obituaries

      MARLIN J. "FRISKE" FRISKE, 73, of Grayling, formerly of Lake Leelanau, died Monday, Jan. 17, 2005.
      Visitation will be Saturday, Jan. 22, 2005, from 5 to 6:30 p.m., at the Sorenson-Lockwood Funeral Home in Grayling, where services will be held at 6:30 p.m.
      Arrangements are by the Sorenson-Lockwood Funeral Home in Grayling.
     
      JAMES R. GREENMAN, 69, of Traverse City, died at home Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2005, after a short illness.
      Arrangements are pending. A full obituary will be in Thursday's edition of the Record-Eagle.
      Arrangements have been entrusted to the Traverse City Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes.
     
      VIOLET RUTH LAFOUNTAIN, 93, of Grayling, died Monday, Jan. 17, 2005.
      Visitation will be Thursday, Jan. 20, 2005, from 1 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m., at the Sorenson-Lockwood Funeral Home in Grayling. Funeral services will be Friday, Jan. 21, at noon, also at the funeral home, with additional visitation for two hours prior to the service. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery.
      Arrangements are by the Sorenson-Lockwood Funeral Home in Grayling.
     
      CATHY LYNN STURDIVANT, 47, of Grayling, died Saturday, Jan. 15, 2005.
      Visitation will be today, Jan. 19, 2005, from 5 to 7 p.m., at the Sorenson-Lockwood Funeral Home in Grayling, where funeral services will be held at 7 p.m.
      Arrangements are by the Sorenson-Lockwood Funeral Home in Grayling.
     
      STEPHEN S. WILSON, 56, of Fife Lake, died Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2005, at his home.
      Funeral services will be held Thursday, Jan. 20, 2005, at 8 p.m., at the Wolfe Funeral Home in Kalkaska, where visitation will take place one hour prior to the service. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery when weather permits.
      Arrangements are by the Wolfe Funeral Home in Kalkaska.
     
      TRAVERSE CITY - Fern M. Luper, 85, of Traverse City, passed away Thursday, Jan. 13, 2005, at Tendercare of Traverse City.
      Fern married Irvin E. Luper on May 6, 1937. Together, they were the original flea market vendor and lifetime members of the Buckley Steam Engine Show. In addition, Fern and Irvin were long-term vendors at the Copemish Flea Market.
      Fern's caring nature showed true as she spent many years as a nanny for numerous children in the Grand Traverse area. She will be remembered as a loving grandmother with a twinkle in her eye, one whose love helped raise her two grandchildren, James and Gary.
      Fern is survived by her sister, Gloria (Gerald) Birdsley of Shirley, Ark.; brother, Bruce (Patricia) Johnson of Olive Branch, Miss.; son, Charles (Dina) Luper of Dunnellon, Fla.; two grandchildren, James G. Luper of Kingsley and Gary L. Luper of Traverse City; great-granddaughter, Randi Wright of Kalkaska; daughter-in-law, Francine Baatz of Kingsley; two step grandchildren, Jay and Douglas Luper; and many nieces and nephews.
      Preceding Fern in death were her daughter, Charlet M. Luper; and son, James E. Luper.
      The family will hold a private ceremony in April.
      Arrangements were made by the Martinson Funeral Home of Suttons Bay.
     
      TRAVERSE CITY - Paul C. Conrad, 67, of Traverse City, passed away Thursday, Jan. 13, 2005, at his home.
      Paul was born Dec. 24, 1937, to Paul and Grace (Ingraham) Conrad Sr., in Detroit. He and his family lived in the Detroit area until 1987, when they moved to Traverse City.
      He was an independent public adjuster, also working as an adjuster for Citizens Insurance.
      Paul was a member of the Korean War vets, a volunteer with Alcoholics Anonymous, was active in fundraising for the Boy Scouts of America and was a former United States Coast Guard Power Squadron member.
      He loved hiking, boating, photography, dog sitting, and especially his beloved black lab, Caesar. Paul was like a dad to many of his son's friends, would instigate summer barbecues, and will always be remembered for his great sense of humor and outgoing friendliness.
      Paul is survived by Sharon Conrad; two sons, Mark and David Conrad; brother, Tom (Dee) Conrad of St. Augustine, Fla.; three sisters, Kathy (Mike) Nash of Fountain Valley, Calif., Carol (Bill) Funkhouser of Gainsville, Ga. and Sue (Ray) Lawrence of Hiawassee, Ga.; many nieces and nephews; and his beloved dog, Caesar.
      He was preceded in death by his parents.
      A memorial service will be held Friday, Jan. 21, 2005, at 3 p.m., at the Covell Funeral Home in Traverse City, where the family will greet friends one hour prior to the service. The Rev. William Lipscomb will officiate.
      Memorial contributions in Paul's name may be directed to the Cherryland Humane Society.
     
      SUN CITY, Fla. - Robert Bryan Girdley Jr., 55, died at the LifePath Hospice House in Sun City, Fla., on Sunday, Dec. 26, 2004.
      He graduated from Milford High School in 1968. Robert went on to the Lawrence Institute of Technology, where he graduated in 1976, becoming a certified public accountant. He practiced throughout the state of Michigan but predominately in Gaylord and Traverse City.
      Robert was stricken with either M.S. or A.L.S., neurologists never agreed on the diagnosis. However, death was a slow and painful process, of which no one deserves. I just want to let you know you were loved, dad, and will be missed.
      He is survived by his mother, Billie Ladon and Charlie Bays; brother, Craig (Sue) Girdley; daughter and son-in-law, Randi and Scott Whitney; along with his four grandchildren, Zachary, Logan, Kaiden and one soon to be born in May. He is also survived by the one woman for whom he always had love until the day he died, Betty Ann Moyer.
      Robert was preceded in death by his father, Robert Bryan Girdley Sr.
      Memorial services will be held Saturday, Jan. 22, 2005, at 11 a.m., at the Christ of the Lakes Lutheran Church, 9101 Highland Road, White Lake, MI. There will be food and fellowship at the church following the service .
      In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the LifePath Hospice House, 908 American Eagle Blvd., Sun City, FL 33573, without the support of which, my family and I would have never survived.
     
      WILLIAMSBURG - George Elwood Webster, 91, of Williamsburg died Friday, Jan. 14, 2005.
      George was born July 17, 1913, in Tipton to Arthur Howard and Myrtle (Lambert) Webster. The family moved to Manton, where George grew up. Except for five years that George lived in Moline, Ill., he was a lifelong resident of Michigan.
      George married Gertie C. Thompson on Oct. 4, 1938. They were married for 61 years before Gertie passed away in November 1999.
      George retired from the Federal Aviation Agency at age 57. He and Gertie then spent several years traveling the United States and Canada.
      As a young man, George was in the CCC in the Upper Peninsula where he worked as an assistant to the camp physician. While there he also learned Morse Code, which led him to work as a telegrapher on Great Lakes Ships and finally to the Civil Aeronautics Administration. He maintained an interest in HAM radio most of his life. His call letters were W8ROL, W9EAP and finally KM8D.
      George was an avid learner. Among his many interests were photography, geology, rock-hounding, jewelry-making, model trains, farming, engines, electronics, hunting, fishing, astronomy, religion, science and nature. He would pursue an interest until he was satisfied with his knowledge of it and then pursue another field until he had it mastered.
      George is survived by his daughters, Carolyn (Frank) Tompkins and Janis Webster; grandchildren, Michael (Sue) Tompkins, Perry (Debbie) Tompkins, Valerie (Williams) Walter, David Williams, Marcia (Paul) Ellul and Heidi Williams; 11 great-grandchildren; and his brother, Leonard Webster of Oakland, Md.
      He was preceded in death by his wife, Gertie; a granddaughter, Yvonne Williams; and half-sisters, Edith (Webster) Nickerson and Alice Webster.
      Friends may call at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home Friday evening, Jan. 21, from 6 to 8 p.m. for visitation.
      Services will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 22, with Pastor John Clark officiating. Burial will take place in Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens.
      Arrangements are being handled by Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home.
