January 21, 2005ObituariesFRANCES D. ALPERS TAPP, 84, of Traverse City, died Thursday, Jan. 20, 2005, at Concord Place. A full obituary will be in Saturday's edition of the Record-Eagle. Arrangements are by the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City. GREENSBORO, N.C. - Donna Jean (Krider) Egeler went home to be with her Lord and Savior Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2005. Born in Brazil, Ind., Feb. 12, 1919, she lived in Leelanau County with her beloved husband, Edward C. Egeler Jr., for over 61 years. Mrs. Egeler moved to Greensboro, N.C. in 2001, where she came to love her friends at The Stratford Retirement Community. Donna Jean was a superb seamstress, milliner and doll crafter. She spent the last twenty years creating beautiful porcelain dolls, earning many national and international awards for not only her dolls, but for the costumes she so superbly designed. She shared her talent with many women during winters spent in Sarasota, Fla. Donna Jean will always be remembered as "the Lady in Pink." She was a member of Gate City Baptist Church in Greensboro, N.C., had been a member of Bayview Wesleyan Church in Traverse City and also attended the First Christian Church and Bible Baptist Church in Traverse City. She is survived by her children, Peter (Frances) of Lafollete, Tenn., Edward (Carol) of Norristown, Pa., and Anna Marie (William) Rogers of Greensboro, N.C. Her children honored her with seven grandchildren, who in turn blessed her with 10 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother, A. Ray Krider; sisters-in-law, Pauline Collett and Arlene Krider; as well as many nieces and nephews. Those who preceded her to glory include her beloved Edward; great-grandson, Hayden Alexander Egeler; parents, A. Dean and Lillian (Hogan) Krider; brother, L. Dean Krider; sister, Anna Mary Thomas; parents-in-law, Edward C. Egeler Sr. and Emma Bahle Egeler; sisters-in-law, Olene Egeler and Norma Krider; and brother-in-law, Alfred Richard Collett. Her life will be celebrated Sunday, Feb. 6, 2005, at 2 p.m., at The Stratford Retirement Community, 1573 Skeet Club Road, High Point, NC. Graveside services will be held at a later date in Omena, and will be announced when plans are finalized. TRAVERSE CITY - Patricia Ann Gillette, 70, of Traverse City, went to be with her Lord on Wednesday, Jan. 19, 2005. She was born Oct. 13, 1934, in Detroit, to Raymond Keith Pearce and Frances Elizabeth (Hughes) Pearce. Pat was a highly social person with an easy smile and a genuine interest in people. Her gift for gardening could transform a lunar landscape in to a plethora of flora in a single season. A true "flour" child, Pat delighted in fattening up family and friends with her wonderful cakes and cookies. As an unrepentant workaholic, she had a long and varied resume that included stints as a legal secretary and more than 20 years as a scan coordinator for the Kroger Company in Milford. In her "retirement," she worked at Sears in Traverse City. She is survived by two sisters, Florence (Lyle) Hukill of Osseo and Deanna (Dale) Bernath of Waldron. Also surviving are three sons, Raymond (Jan) Pezzi of Traverse City, Kevin (Carolyn) Pezzi, MD of Thompsonville and Jeffrey (Sarah) Pezzi of Flushing; and grandsons, James, Kyle, Jeffrey, Matthew and Alexander. Services will be held Monday, Jan. 24, at 2:30 p.m., at Long Lake Friends Church, 4172 Church Road, Traverse City. Memorials may be made to Long Lake Friends Church. Arrangements are by the Edwards-Oak Grove Funeral Home in Bear Lake. LAS VEGAS - Larry Joe Kinney passed away at 66 of complications from cancer while surrounded by his family at home in Las Vegas. Born in Wilmot, Ark., and raised on a farm in Louisiana, he spent a lifetime in the oil industry. He founded Kinnco, Inc. in northern Michigan in 1973. A successful businessman and entrepreneur, Larry was a well-respected and loved man by the people who knew him. Larry was always a loving and gracious husband, father, grandfather and brother to his wife, Sandra, of 47 years; his daughters, Terri and Cindy; his daughter-in-law, Susan; his two grandchildren, Kaylena and Joey; and his beloved brother, Buddy. He was preceded in death by his son, Randy; his parents, R.V. and Edna Kinney; and his sister, Tut. Larry came from a simple life and worked hard to give the world to his wife, children and friends. He was always a generous man and will be remembered fondly by all of those whose lives he touched. Friends and family are invited to celebrate Larry's life on Saturday, Jan. 22, 2005, at 3 p.m., at Palm Mortuary located at 7400 W. Cheyenne Ave., Las Vegas, NV 89129. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions in Larry's memory for the building fund at First Baptist Church of the Lakes, 9125 Spring Mtn. Road, Las Vegas, NV. TRAVERSE CITY - Edna W. Kleis, 88, of Traverse City, died Wednesday, Jan. 19, 2005, at Birchwood Nursing Center. A former teacher, Edna taught schools in Rapid City and Bellaire. Born Sept. 28, 1916, in Rapid City, she was the daughter of Herbert and Dora (Matthews) Van. Survivors include her daughter, Dana (Alan) Holleman of New Carlisle, Ind.; friends, Opal (Donald) Chilson of Williamsburg; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by husbands, George H. Kleis and Claudis Claypoole. No services are planned at this time. Burial will take place in Clearwater Cemetery in Rapid City. Arrangements are being made by the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City. TRAVERSE CITY - Charlene Kortokrax, 78, of Traverse City, died Wednesday, Jan. 19, 2005, at Munson Medical Center. Charlene lived out in the country in Arkansas as a child. She walked to school, and if the creek was flooded she went to school in a wagon. When Charlene was 14 years old she moved to Beulah and attended school in Benzonia, graduating in 1946. Her first job was at Dean's Restaurant in Beulah and at the Drug Store where they had a soda fountain. She worked at Burwoods off and on throughout her adult life, retiring from there in 1988. After retiring she enjoyed baby-sitting. Charlene has traveled to see her grandchildren in Phoenix, Ariz., Grand Junction, Colo. and Rhode Island. She also had a very enjoyable trip to Hawaii. Charlene has enjoyed hobbies of sewing, crocheting, gardening, crafts and shopping. She especially loved spending time with her grandchildren. Born Nov. 30, 1926, in Griffithville, Ark., she was the daughter of Cyrus "Charlie" Larkin and Adele (Seymore) Johnson. On Oct. 9, 1948, in Traverse City, she married Anthony "John" Kortokrax, who died Sept. 4, 1987. Surviving are three children, Deborah (John) Preville of Rhode Island, Larry (Betsie) Kortokrax of Traverse City and Glenda (Phil) Oliver of Grand Junction, Colo.; three sisters, Nina (Roswell) Ghastin, Ruth Maginity and Betz Paupore; two brothers, James (Olga) Johnson and Donald Johnson; five grandchildren, Tara Govin, Rob Preville, A.J. Kortokrax, Laura Kortokrax and Kaylyn Oliver; two great-granddaughters, Taylor and Courtney; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; and a brother, Howard Funeral services will be held today, Friday, Jan. 21, 2005, at 11 a.m., at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home, where friends may call one hour prior to the service. Burial will take place at the Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens. Memorials may be directed to Orchard Creek Dementia Care. BEULAH - Julian R. Sears, 89, of Beulah, died Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2005, at Paul Oliver Memorial Hospital in Frankfort. He was born Jan. 18, 1916, in Beulah, the son of William and Kathleen Sears. Julian lived on the family farm and was very proud of the farm and the way he maintained it. He meticulously picked stones from the fields and grew beautiful hydrangeas and cosmos. When not tending to his farm, Julian enjoyed playing the organ, especially religious hymns. He was a well-liked and trusted neighbor and friend who enjoyed helping young couples to get started in life. Julian is survived by three nieces, Dorcas MacIntosh of Davison, Georgine Lawson of Moses Lake, Wash., and Caroline; four nephews, Paul Sears of Sacramento, Calif., James Sears of Shelby Township, Robert Sears of Clearwater, Fla., and Larry MacIntosh; and cousin, Eileen Sears of Beulah. Julian was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Sears in 1969; two brothers, Walter and George Sears; and two sisters, Bernice Warner and Helen Marchand. Graveside committal services will be held in the spring at the Thompsonville Cemetery. The Bennett-Barz Funeral Home in Beulah is in charge of funeral arrangements.
