ERLING KLUG, 87, of Grayling, died Saturday, Jan. 22, 2005. Visitation will be today, Jan. 23, 2005, from 5 to 8 p.m., at the Sorenson-Lockwood Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held Monday, Jan. 24, 2005, at 11 a.m., also at the funeral home. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery. Arrangements are by the Sorenson-Lockwood Funeral Home in Grayling. HILMA A. (STOOPS) LAWRENCE, 78, of Frankfort, died Saturday, Jan. 22, 2005. Arrangements are pending and a complete obituary will follow in Monday's edition of the Record-Eagle. The Benzonia Chapel of McElduff Funeral Home and Cremation Service is handling the arrangements. DR. ADAM C. McCLAY, 82, of Traverse City, died Thursday, Jan. 20, 2005, at Munson Hospice House. Arrangements are pending and will be announced by the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home of Traverse City. ROSE McQUEER, 68, of Mayfield, died Friday, Jan. 21, 2005, at Munson Medical Center. Arrangements are pending and a full obituary will be in a later edition of the Record-Eagle. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Covell-Smith Funeral Home of Kingsley. LEONARD A. VISCI, 81, of Milton Township, died Saturday, Jan. 22, 2005, at Meadowbrook Nursing Home in Bellaire. Arrangements are pending and a full obituary will appear in a later edition of the Record-Eagle. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Covell Funeral Home of Elk Rapids. BEATRICE E. WINDOVER, 90, of Traverse City, passed away on Friday, Jan. 21, 2005, at Munson Medical Center. A memorial service will be held at a later date. The family is being served by the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City. MARQUETTE - Benjamin "Fred" Bowers, 84, passed away Wednesday Dec. 29, 2004, at the Jacobetti Veterans Home in Marquette. He was involved in a car accident last January. He was born Jan 21, 1920, in Paris, Mich., to parents, Jesse and Alice (Van Arman) Bowers. He attended school in Northville. After serving three years in the Army during World War II, Ben married Helen M. Keelan in 1949, in Cadillac. They settled in Traverse City in the early 1960s, and Ben worked for Cone Drive until his retirement in 1982. Later, he worked for Alken Ziegler in Kalkaska. He was a member of the Bayview Wesleyan Church. In 1995, Ben moved to the Crystal Falls/Iron River area in the Upper Peninsula to be closer to his nieces and nephews in Sidnaw. He was preceded in death by his wife of 40 years and a brother, Jesse Bowers. The Fassbender Funeral Home in Marquette is handling cremation, www.fassbenderfuneralhome.com. A service will be held in Traverse City in the spring. CLAY TOWNSHIP - Beverly C. Coolman, 83, of Clay Township, formerly of Traverse City, died Wednesday, Jan. 19, 2005, at Medilodge of St. Clair. She was born Nov. 14, 1921, in Detroit. On Aug. 19, 1940, in Detroit, she married Thomas M. Coolman. Beverly is survived by her husband, Thomas M.; son, Tom (Susan) Coolman Jr.; daughter, Beverly A. Coolman; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held Saturday, Jan. 29, 2005, at 11 a.m., at the Gilbert Funeral Home in Algonac, where visitation will take place one hour prior to the service. Pastor Robert Wagner will officiate. ELK RAPIDS - Audrey Ann Free, 69, of Elk Rapids, died Wednesday, Jan. 19, 2005, at her residence. Audrey was born Oct. 10, 1935, in Detroit, the daughter of Michael William and Helen Stella (Blaztewski) Zajac. She was employed as an executive secretary for Pennsylvania Diesel Corporation, retiring in 1980. Audrey loved being a mother and grandmother, and volunteered at Munson Medical Center Pediatric Division. She liked gardening and sailing, and was very active in community events in the Elk Rapids area. Surviving are three sons, Charles (Margaret) Boon, Mark (Vicki) Boon and Chris Boon; one daughter, Mrs. David (Pam) Wiggins; seven grandchildren, Jessica, Wade, Jack, Tatum, Ellie, Matthew and Julane; brother, Donald Zajac; sister, Cindy Peterson; dearest friend, June Hemline; along with many close friends and family. She was preceded in death by her parents. A Mass from the Order of Christian Funerals will be celebrated today, Jan. 23, 2005, at 1 p.m., at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Elk Rapids, with Rev. Robert J. Zuchowski as celebrant. Memorial contributions may be made to Munson Medical Center Pediatric Center. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Covell Funeral Home in Elk Rapids. TRAVERSE CITY - Vivian G. (Kamp) Schutt, 90, of Wyoming, Mich., died Thursday, Jan. 20, 2005, in the loving care of her daughter and son-in-law's home. Vivian was born Nov. 2, 1914, in Grand Rapids, the daughter of William and Signa (Buck) Kamp. On June 4, 1936, she married Peter G. Schutt, who preceded her in death. Vivian loved to create with her knitting, crocheting, and ceramics. When not creating she would be active with dancing, bowling or reading a good book. She would spend many fond moments watching the sunsets in her west facing room. She would remember the many special occasions in their summer mobile home when Peter would fish on Wabasis Lake in their pontoon boat. Peter would catch the fish and Vivian would fry them up for the family dinner. Vivian especially loved her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was an expert cribbage player. While playing with her children and grandchildren, she would always win in a good cribbage game. Vivian has retired as the family cribbage champion. She is survived by her two daughters, Judy (Gerald) Krauss of Grand Rapids and Char (Robert) MacEachran of Traverse City; a brother, Robert Kamp of Florida; five beautiful grandchildren; and seven wonderful great-grandchildren. Visitation will be held today, Jan. 23, 2005, from 1 to 2 p.m., at the Zaagman Memorial Chapel, 2800 Burton SE, Grand Rapids, MI; (616) 940-3022. A funeral service will be held today at 2 p.m. Burial will be in the Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens in Grand Rapids. Local arrangements are with the Martinson Funeral Home of Suttons Bay. TRAVERSE CITY - Frances D. "Fran" Alpers Tapp, 84, died Thursday, Jan. 20, 2005, at Concord Place in Traverse City. A life-long resident of Traverse City, she was born July 15, 1920, on Secor Road to a pioneer family, Frank and Sarah (McGarry) Kratochvil. On Jan. 22, 1942, at St. Francis Catholic Church, she married Lewis Alpers, who passed away July 19, 2000. On Oct. 13, 2002, she married Gleason Tapp, who survives. They were very happy in their retiring years. In 1962, she and her husband, Louie, began Louies Meats, which still is a family owned and operated business. An avid golfer and bowler, she enjoyed reading, flower gardening and feeding the birds. A founding member of St. Patrick Catholic Church, she was very active in many church activities, including St. Patrick Council of Catholic Women. In 1989, she was selected as St. Patrick CCW woman of the year. She was a past president of the Society of Carmel and belonged to the Interlochen Ladies Golf League and the Traverse City Ladies Auxiliary #383 of the Fraternal Order of Eagles. In addition to her husband, Gleason, Frances is survived by one daughter, Patricia (James) Monroe of Bellaire; four sons, Michael of Traverse City, Mark of Ann Arbor, Timothy (Mona) and Anthony (Becky) of Traverse City; 11 grandchildren, James (Jayne) and Steven Monroe, Andy (Jessie), Eric (Khiela), Tyler, Joni, Trevor and Stephen Alpers, Scott Baldwin, Lisa Morgan and Niki (John) Witkop; and seven great-grandchildren, Danny, Scott, Austin, Ryan, Nicholas, Reeghan and Maicyn. She is also survived by a stepdaughter, Eleanor (Robert) Smith; five step-grandchildren; and stepdaughter-in-law, Cheryl Tapp. She was preceded in death by her first husband; parents; an infant daughter, Katherine Ann; two brothers, Julius and Robert Kratochvil; three sisters, Isabella Lautner, Inez Rennie and Naomi Melichar; and a stepson, Dr. Stanley Tapp. The family will receive friends at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home from 2 to 4 p.m., today, Jan. 23, 2005, and again from 6:30 to 8 p.m., at St. Patrick Catholic Church, where a scripture service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Monday, Jan. 24, at 11 a.m., also at the church, with visitation one hour prior to the service. Fr. Gerald Michetti will officiate. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to St. Patrick Catholic Church, the Carmelite Monastery or Munson Hospice. TRAVERSE CITY - Delbert E. "Del" Thorsen, 77, of Traverse City, formerly of Muskegon, died Friday, Jan. 21, 2005. Born Dec. 8, 1927, in Muskegon, he was the son of Christen and Irene Emily (Gonyo) Thorsen. On May 6, 1950, at St. Jeans Catholic Church in Muskegon, he married Shirley Anderson. Del served in the Navy during World War II and in the Marines during the Korean conflict. He loved America, the flag, and all it represents. After 17 years as parts manager, Del retired from Chet Swanson in 1980. After retirement, he worked for his son-in-law, who owns World Truck Auto. Throughout his life, Del loved the outdoors, taking in golf, hunting, bow hunting, snowmobiling and ice fishing. Del had the gift of gab and liked to share with others. He is survived by his wife, Shirley; two daughters, Kris (Shawn) Breaugh of Interlochen and Kim (Jeff) Brackett of Grawn; brother, Gene Thorsen of Muskegon; as well as several nieces and nephews. Del is also survived by his four grand dogs, Mya, Nanook, Jack and Joe. Del was preceded in death by his parents. A service of remembrance will be held Wednesday, Jan. 26, 2005, at 11 a.m., at the Covell Funeral Home in Traverse City, where the family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Fr. Peter Eke will officiate the service. Interment will be in Oakwood Catholic Cemetery. Military honors will be presented under the auspices of the VFW Post 2780. The family asks those wishing to give memorials to please remember the Father Fred Foundation. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Covell Funeral Homes of Traverse City. TRAVERSE CITY - Linus A. Etienne, 94, died Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2005, at Grand Traverse Pavilions. Born Jan. 28, 1910, the son of the late Michael A. and Mayme H. (James) Etienne. On Nov. 28, 1931, in Cleveland, Ohio, Linus married the former Maybelle E. Lambert, who survives. He was a former resident of Cleveland, Ohio, Bay City and Harrison, where he was a member of the St. Athanasius Catholic Church. Linus had a great love of music. In his retirement years he enjoyed fishing, hunting and refinishing antiques. Survivors include his wife of 73 years, Maybelle; sons, Linus Clinton (Audrey) Etienne of Charlevoix and Douglas James (Janet) Etienne of Leesburg, Fla.; a daughter, Carol Lee (Gerald) Erway of Williamsburg; 11 grandchildren, Michael (Marcy) Etienne, Matthew (Michelle) Etienne, Gregory (Christine) Etienne, Leslie Etienne, Lisette (Troy) Gerow, Danielle Shuler, Jeff Etienne, Alicia Etienne and Michael, Patrick and Jacob Erway; and 13 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his two brothers, Casper and Ivo, and two sisters, Elsie and Marcella. Linus was preceded in death by two brothers, Justus and James; and one sister, Irene. A Memorial Mass will be held at 10 a. m. Saturday, Jan. 29, in Harrison at St. Athanasius Catholic Church, with Rev. Noel Ruby serving as the celebrant. Burial will take place at a later date in St. Athanasius Cemetery. In remembrance of Linus, memorials may be directed to St. Athanasius Catholic Church or to Grand Traverse Pavilions. Arrangements are being handled by Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City.
