Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2005, at 11 a.m., at the Benzonia Chapel of McElduff Funeral Home, with visitation one hour prior to the service. Pastor James Petteys will officiate. JAMES CRAIG, 68, of Traverse City, died Saturday, Jan. 29, 2005, at Munson Medical Center. Arrangements will be announced by the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City. MARVIN C. DELANO, 87, of Mancelona, formerly of the Kalamazoo area, died Saturday, Jan. 29, 2005, at the Charlevoix Area Hospital. Visitation will take place on Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2005, from 6 to 8 p.m., at the Rupert, Durham, Marshall and Gren Life Story Funeral Home, Vicksburg Chapel. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 2, at 11 a.m., also at the funeral home. Local arrangements were handled by the Mancelona Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes. GARY E. FARR, 42, of Kalkaska, died Friday night, Jan. 28, 2005, in Crawford County, of injuries suffered in a snowmobile accident. Friends may call Monday, Jan. 31, 2005, from 3 to 8 p.m., at the Wolfe Funeral Home in Kalkaska. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Feb. 1, at 11 a.m., also at the funeral home. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery in Kalkaska. Arrangements are by the Wolfe Funeral Home in Kalkaska. JEAN ALICE NUNNELLEY died Thursday afternoon, Jan. 27, 2005, at Tendercare Nursing Home. REV. CHARLES J. "CHUCK" STOPPELS died Saturday, Jan. 29, 2005, at Kalkaska Memorial Health Center Long Term Care. Visitation will be Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2005, from 2 to 7 p.m., at the Wolfe Funeral Home in Kalkaska, with additional visitation on Wednesday, Feb. 2, from 1 to 5 p.m. Funeral services will be announced in a full obituary in Monday's edition of the Record-Eagle. The Wolfe Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. JAMES ARTHUR WORTLEY JR., 70, of Mesick, died Friday, Jan. 28, 2005, at his residence. Visitation will be held Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2005, from 6 to 8 p.m., at the Terwilliger Funeral Home in Kaleva. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, Feb. 2, at 11 a.m., also at the funeral home, with the Rev. Floyd Soper officiating. Interment will be in the Marilla Township Cemetery in the spring. The Terwilliger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. COPEMISH - James J. "Jay" Billings, 64, went to be with our Lord on Saturday, Jan. 22, 2005, at St. James Hospital in Olympia Fields, Ill. He was born March 31, 1940, in Boston, the son of the late Sumner and Sally (Bruce) Billings. Jay was a veteran of the Vietnam War, serving in the United States Navy. A member of the Benzie Masonic Lodge No. 444, F&AM for 10 years, he owned the Crystal Café in Benzonia and was co-owner J&R Investments. Jay leaves behind his beloved wife, CeCe (Fejedelem); brother, Bruce (Sabrina) of El Cajon, Calif.; sister, Susan Pappas of Woburn, Mass; special nieces and nephews, Lisa and Kevin Klein of Beaverton, and Jason and Stephania Fejedelem of Montrose; friend and companion, BJ; and many brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law. He also leaves his precious friends, Richard and Kathy McCarty of Benzonia, Kathy and Mike Dull of Traverse City, Charlie Shields of St. Louis, Gary Sealander of Copemish, and Matthew and Penney Fejedelem of Montrose, and all the other special friends who have touched his heart. Cremation has taken place. A celebration of Jay's life and a Masonic memorial service will be held on Saturday, Feb. 12, 2005, at 11 a.m., at the Benzonia Chapel of McElduff Funeral Home, with the Benzie Masonic Lodge conducting the service. The Benzonia Chapel of McElduff Funeral Home and Cremation Service is handling the arrangements. SANFORD, Fla. - Family and friends mourn the passing of a bright light in their lives. David E. Green, 63, of Sanford, Fla., formerly of Traverse City, succumbed, after a long illness and a valiant fight, on Jan. 24, 2005. The eagle soars and so does he. He was born in Traverse City on March 26, 1941, the son of the late Earl and Virginia (Hanna) Green. Dave married Shirlee (Sobbry) Shumsky on March 17, 1979, in Elk Rapids, and shortly after they moved to Florida when Dave's trade as a drywall finisher took him to Disney's Epcot Center, where he worked for several years. Dave had an outstanding reputation for over 25 years as a fast-pitch baseball player in Michigan, Wisconsin and Florida. He pitched four games in a row to win Wisconsin's Allstate Class C Men's Fast-pitch Tournament in 1978. He was clocked at 101 miles per hour and voted Most Valuable Player and Most Valuable Pitcher. His love of the outdoors included fishing and hunting in northern Michigan. He was an avid golfer, experiencing not one, but two holes-in-one. He and Shirlee shared their enthusiasm for bingo and cards with many friends and family. He was a member of Sanford Elk's Lodge 1241 and Lion's Club. Dave loved life, family, friends and his dog, Sassy. He will always be remembered as a generous and giving friend to many, with a great sense of humor. Along with his wife, Shirlee, Dave is survived by his children, Timothy and Mark Green of Traverse City, Terry (Edna) Green of Apopka, Fla., and Lori (Ronald) Spohn of Spring Creek, Nev. Stepchildren include Patricia (Dan) Greene of Jackson, Richard Shumsky Jr. and Betsy Palmer of Sanford, Fla., and Connie (Bill) Perkins of Deltona, Fla. Brothers and sisters include Jerry (Donna) Green, Vicki (Alfred) Scriver, Minnie (Art) Gagnon, Betty (Merlin) Shawnoskey, all of Traverse City, Robert (Patricia) Green of Spring Lake, Beverly (Lonnie) Schaub of Kingsley and Paula (Larry) Gauthier of Grawn. Survivors also include 23 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. His children's mother, Beverly J. Green, preceded him in death in 2003. A line from one of his favorite songs is, "Six days on the road and I'm gonna' make it home tonight." It's been a long road, Dave, but you're home now. The Banfield Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements and cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held in Traverse City this summer. King, 89, died Friday, Jan. 28, 2005, at Bortz Health Care. Emma was born Aug. 4, 1915, in Scottville, to Otto and Katie (Brown) Juhnke. She was raised in the Scottville/Ludington area on a farm with five sisters and two brothers After graduating from High School in Scottville, Emma met Donald C. King in the Lapeer area, and they married on Dec. 17, 1939, in Traverse City, where she raised her family. Emma was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, the Ladies Aid Society, the Retirees Club Cone Gear, and she worked for 30 years as an assistant treasurer for the Cone Drive Credit Union. She enjoyed reading, taking walks, and birdwatching while she tended her garden. Emma is survived by two daughters, Donna (Don) Bedtelyon of Elk Rapids and Eva Kay Giddis of Traverse City; one son, Richard (Sandy) King of Middletown, Ohio; former daughter-in-law, Karen King; one brother, John Juhnke of Alabama; seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her parents; husband, Donald; five sisters; one brother; and son-in-law, Jerald. Visitation will take place Monday, Jan. 31, 2005, from 2 to 4 p.m., at Trinity Lutheran Church, where the funeral service will be held at 4 p.m. The Rev. Robert Zagore will officiate. Memorial donations would be appreciated to the Humane Society or to Trinity Lutheran Church. Arrangements are being handled by the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City. PORTAGE - Earl Philip Weber, 78, of Portage, died Wednesday, Jan. 19, 2005, in Florida. Earl was born May 27, 1926, in Ottoville, Ohio. A resident of Portage and Taylor, Earl enjoyed vacationing in the Traverse City area. He was a World War II veteran and a retired bricklayer. Surviving are his children, Denise (Rick) Moore, Pam (Larry) Newhouse, Eric (Johanna) Weber, Nancy (Dave) Blakley, Mary (Dale) Kalhorn, Mike Weber, Dorothy (Phil) McIntyre, John Weber, Kathy Weber and Valerie (Craig) Duncan; 21 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; four brothers, Robert, William, Tom and Mark Weber; and three sisters, Dorothy Caron, Betty Finstad and Carol Serra. He was preceded in death by wife, Elaine (Page) Weber. A memorial Mass will be celebrated Saturday, Feb. 5, 2005, at noon, at St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church, 1150 W. Centre Ave., Portage, MI. Following Mass the family will receive friends during a luncheon in Marion Hall. On Monday, there will be combined burial service for Elaine and Earl in Ft. Custer National Cemetery. HONOR - Ethan Earl Wilke, 81, of Honor, died Friday, Jan. 28, 2005, at The Maples in Frankfort. He was born May 1, 1923, in Ann Arbor, the son of Joseph and Elsie (Gerstler) Wilke. Ethan had been a residential builder in the Ann Arbor Area for 50 years, and was an active member of Our Savior Lutheran Church in Benzonia. Ethan loved woodworking in his spare time. On Nov. 17, 1945, in Ann Arbor, Ethan married Joyce J. Mann, who survives him. He is also survived by two sons, Gary Wilke of Romeo and Mark Wilke of Honor; two grandchildren, Jeffrey (Jamie) Wilke of Palmer Lake, Colo., and Kimberly Wilke of Dexter; daughter-in-law, Karen (Barry) O'Connor of Dexter; and brother, Donald Wilke of Grass Lake. Ethan was preceded in death by his parents; and son, David Wilke on Nov. 18, 1987. Funeral services will be conducted Sunday, Jan. 30, 2005, at 2 p.m., at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Benzonia, with visitation one hour prior to the service. The Rev. Robert Bennett will officiate. Graveside interment services will be held Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2005, at 1 p.m., at Bethlehem Cemetery in Ann Arbor. Memorial contributions may be made to Our Savior Lutheran Church Building Fund, The Maples-Benzie County Medical Care Facility or to the American Heart and Stroke Association.
