HELEN MARY POWELL, 89, of Traverse City, died Jan. 30, 2005.
A celebration of her life will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday, July 24, at the Powell Cottage at 4910 S.E. Torch Lake Dr., Bellaire.
Cornelius Neil Bristol
Died July 19, 2005
TORCH LAKE - Neil Bristol, 79, of Torch Lake, passed away Tuesday, July 19, 2005, at Munson Medical Center of complications following lung surgery.
He was born July 9, 1926, in Greenwich, Conn., the only son of Gardner and Gladys Bristol. An outstanding high school athlete, he graduated from the Brunswick School in Greenwich.
A world War II veteran, he enlisted in the Navy and served proudly and honorably in the South Pacific Theater aboard the S.S. Alaska.
Following his discharge, he entered Michigan State University, where he was recruited as a member of the 1st hockey team on that campus, lettering each of his four years there. He received an engineering degree and was employed in the machine tool industry.
In 1951, he married Caroline Gray and made his home in Dearborn.
Neil was a golfer and tennis player. He was an avid sports fan and a dedicated Spartan Booster. He maintained close relationships with many college friends throughout his lifetime.
In 1985, he married Mary Terese Muldowney and retired to Torch Lake, spending winters in Coca Beach, Fla.
He is survived by his loving wife, "MT"; daughters, Susan (Dennis) Olson, Amy (Bill) Rice and Meg (Richard) Pierce; son, Neil (Kim); stepson, Tom (Lisa) Muldowney; sister, Margaret Henke; and 15 grandchildren.
Neil will be remembered by all whose lives he touched as an easy-going, fun loving person with a sharp wit and an incredible memory. He was a loving and caring man who will be deeply mourned by his wife and family.
A memorial service will be held today, July 22, 2005, at 1:30 p.m., at the First Presbyterian Church of Elk Rapids, with the Rev. Dr. Daniel Herlein officiating. Family and friends are welcome to attend a reception following the service at the township hall.
Memorial contributions may be directed to The American Lung Association, The American Cancer Society or the Michigan Red Cross.
Arrangements were entrusted to the Covell Funeral Home of Elk Rapids.
Marcus H. Holt
Died July 19, 2005
ELLSWORTH - Marcus H. Holt, 55, of Ellsworth, died Tuesday, July 19, 2005, at Northern Michigan Hospital in Petoskey.
Mark was born May 2, 1950, in Flint, the son of Janette (Kirk) and Marcus Holt Jr. He graduated from Flint Central High School in 1968.
He was a pipefitter, belonging to Pipefitters Local #370 in Flint, and worked around the country for several industries.
Mark loved the outdoors, fishing, hunting, and especially building his house and working in the garden with his wife, Donna. He moved to Ellsworth in 2001, and there he belonged to the Ellsworth Lion's Club and Bethany Lutheran Church in Charlevoix.
Mark is survived by his wife, Donna J. of Ellsworth; daughters, Tina M. (Michael) Zomerfeld of Clawson, Karrie (Matthew) Worthing of Lapeer and Krista (Josh Davies) Kuchek of Genesee; grandchildren, Lance Zomerfeld and Kellen Kuchek; parents Janette and Marcus Holt Jr. of Columbiaville; sisters, Donna (Eugene) Mann of Flushing, Peggy (Kenn) Roman of Phoenix, Judy Goyette of Mt. Morris and Rhonda (Michael) Estes of Traverse City; and brother, Randall (Cathy) Holt of Tucson, Ariz.
A memorial service will be held Sunday, July 24, at 2 p.m., at the Bethany Lutheran Church in Charlevoix, with Pastor Michael Teuscher officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the National Kidney Foundation, 1169 Oak Valley Dr., Ann Arbor, MI 48108.

Barbara J. Gladstone McClellan
Died July 19, 2005
FRANKFORT - Barbara J. Gladstone McClellan, 76, of Frankfort, died Tuesday, July 19, 2005, at Bortz Health Care in Traverse City. She was born July 19, 1929, in Mesick, the daughter of Sylvester and Rosa (Jewett) Oatley.
Barbara was married April 24, 1948, to Richard G. Gladstone in Marshall. He preceded her in death on March 2, 1980. In 1981, Barbara married Arthur R. McClellan, who preceded her in death on Feb. 16, 1998.
Barbara was a member of the Frankfort United Methodist Church. While living in Frankfort, Barbara was employed by A&P Tea Company for 18 years. She then worked as a receptionist for Dr. James Kaufman until her retirement in 1982.
In her spare time, Barbara enjoyed growing flowers, reading and cooking.
Barbara is survived by four children, the Rev. David (Terry) Gladstone of Port Huron, Jean (Frank) McClellan of Norfolk, Va., Carol (George) Bliss of Traverse City and Sherrie (Rick) Moseler of Frankfort; eight grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Barbara was also preceded in death by her brother, Theron Oatley; and sisters, Doris Persing, Ophie Rossell and Vivian Pitman.
Visitation will be held Sunday, July 24, 2005, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m., at the Bennett-Barz Funeral Home in Beulah. Funeral services will be conducted Monday, July 25, 2005, at 11 a.m., at the Frankfort United Methodist Church, with the Reverend Greg Culver officiating. Interment will be in the Antioch Township Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made in her name to the Frankfort United Methodist Church Memorial Fund.
The Bennett-Barz Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Robert L. Schmidt
Died July 20, 2005
EMPIRE - Robert Lyle Schmidt, 70, of Empire died at his home surrounded by his loving family.
Bob was born May 17, 1935, in Frankfort, to Lyle and Sarah (VanSlambrouck) Schmidt. He was raised in Empire on his family farm.
After graduating from Empire High School, Bob joined the United States Marine Corps and served his country honorably. When he left the service, Bob met Alice Elmer and they married in 1960 at St. Philip Neri Catholic Church in Empire. They raised their family in the Empire community.
He was a member of the V.F.W. and enjoyed gardening, fishing and hunting, and loved to be around his family. He also enjoyed being with his friends at the " Dirty Old Men's Club" in Empire.
Bob is survived by his wife, Alice; three children, Annette (Jeff) Rosensteel of Bay City, Don (Roxane) Schmidt of Neenah, Wis., and Brenda Schmidt of Memphis, Tenn.; three grandchildren, Nikayla, Shantaya and Alex; and his mother, Sarah Schmidt of Empire.
He was preceded in death by his father.
Visitation will take place today, July 22, 2005, from 5 to 8 p.m., at St. Philip Neri Catholic Church in Empire. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday, July 23, at 11 a.m., also at the church, where visitation will take place one hour prior to the Mass. The Rev. Fr. Garth Hilmer will serve as celebrant. Burial will be in St. Philip Neri Catholic Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be directed to Munson Hospice or to Empire Fire and Rescue.
The family is being served by The Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City.
