July 29, 2005Shark frenzy grips West Bay waterfrontBY GARRET ELLISONRecord-Eagle staff writer Larry Pacurai and Lori Miller awoke in the middle of a shark attack. "I guess it's not safe in the bay," Miller said jokingly. Sleeping aboard their boat tied-up to the breakwall at the Open Space, Miller and Pacurai rubbed sleep from their eyes Thursday morning to find a scene from "Jaws" being played out before them. Steven Spielberg's shark terror film was the first screening at the Open Space venue of the Traverse City Film Festival on Thursday night. To celebrate, volunteers acquired a 1954 Chris-Craft to stand in for "The Orca" and Old Town Playhouse actors Tom Prichard and Steve Morse played lookalikes from the film. They did the scene at 11 a.m. and 8:30 p.m., the foreboding beat of the "Jaws" music sounding in the background both times. Across the Open Space Thursday night, scores of people lined the railing as divers donned scuba gear and entered the water with wooden shark fins. Ted and Christy Pryde of Traverse City waited in lawn chairs. "'Jaws' used to be my favorite movie of all time," Ted Pryde said. "I'm eager to see it in this environment." Rain threatened around 9:15 p.m. The crowd hunkered down, waiting for the weather to improve. Festival manager Jason Pollock was confident that the film was still a go at press time. By 10, festival officials estimated the audience at around 6,000 people. "Greg McMaster has assured us that this will pass by 10 p.m.," he said. "We planned to start at 10:15 anyway."
