July 31, 2005Odds and ends from the Film FestivalFROM STAFF REPORTSThose who attended Friday's screening of "Tarnation" at Old Town Playhouse said the packed house was moved by both the director and the film. Jonathan Caouette directed and wrote "Tarnation," building the film around a lifetime of home movies. It's about growing up gay and fatherless in suburban Texas with grandparents who couldn't cope and a mother who was schizophrenic. He edited the film himself, too, spending a little more than $200 on the whole thing. Anyway, one of the people in attendance reported: "When it was over, there was a standing ovation and he answered questions. Almost everyone stayed, and asked as many questions as they could. "It was heartwarming, and it was overwhelming. He was overwhelmed that we would invite him to come, with this low-budget self-made movie. It was just very inspiring." - It's not over until it's over, but festival officials are predicting that attendance at the free nightly Open Space films could exceed 20,000. There were about 6,000 Thursday night for "Jaws," and probably more than that for "The Princess Bride" Friday. Meanwhile, attendance at the paid indoor venues is probably going to be in the 19,000-20,000 range as well. As of Saturday morning, only two films weren't sold out or near sold out, "Human Resources" and "Time Out."
