March 20, 2005ObituariesLAVERNE 'JOE' KING, 65, of Peshawbestown, died Friday, March 18, 2005, at Spectrum Health Center, Grand Rapids. Visitation will take place today, March 20, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at Arsulowicz Mortuaries of Grand Rapids. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. at the funeral home in Grand Rapids. Burial will follow in Washington Memorial Gardens in Grand Rapids. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Arsulowicz Mortuaries of Grand Rapids. DONNA MAY MAJCHRZAK, 66, of Manistee, died Friday, March 18, 2005, at Manistee County Medical Care Facility. The family will be present at the Herbert Funeral Home in Manistee on Monday, March 21, 2005, from 7 to 9 p.m. to receive friends. Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday, March 22, 2005, at 11 a.m., also at the funeral home, with the Rev. Dennis Rahn officiating. Burial will follow at Mt. Carmel Cemetery in Manistee. The Herbert Funeral Home of Manistee is in charge of funeral arrangements. THOMPSONVILLE - Russell Francis Bancroft, 73, died peacefully in his sleep Friday afternoon, March 18, 2005. He was born in Frankfort Feb. 9, 1932, to Francis "Frank" and Martha Bancroft (MacGirr). His parents moved to Flint so that he could attend the Michigan School for the Deaf, from where he graduated in 1951. On May 21, 1955, he married Eleanor M. Drake; together they raised two sons, Charles and Michael. Russell was employed at Buick, where he worked on the line for 35 1/2 years and was a member of the UAW Local #559. After retirement he moved back to Benzie County to support his mother and enjoy snowmobiling, hunting and entertaining his grandchildren. Recently Russell was a supporter of the Benzie County Sportsman Club, the Grand Traverse Area UAW Retirees, and the Traverse City Association of the Deaf. He was preceded in death by his parents; Martha's second husband, Bill MacGirr; and his best man, John Hultquist. He leaves behind his wife of 49 years, Eleanor; sons, Charles Francis and Michael Russell (Laura), and their children, Andrew, Jonathan, Krystal, Joshua, Catherine, Josiah and Carissa; cousin, Eliott Bancroft; and good friend, Dale Thompson. Visitation will take place today, March 20, at the Frankfort Chapel of McElduff Funeral Home from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, March 21, at the Benzonia Chapel with Ethan DeSota officiating. Interment will be in Platte Twp. Cemetery this spring. The Benzonia Chapel of McElduff Funeral Home & Cremation Service is handling the arrangements. NORTHPORT - Wendel W. "Mickey" Hall, 78, of Northport, died Wednesday, March 16, 2005, at Leelanau Memorial Health Center. Mickey was born in Northport Nov. 4, 1926, the son of Willard and Violet (Kellogg) Hall. He graduated from Northport High School in 1944, served in the US Navy in World War II, and retired from the Turnstead Division of General Motors. Surviving is his brother, Randall K. Hall of Saginaw; the families of two nieces, Catherine (Brian) McNally of Hemlock and Tasma (John) Swanson of Dewitt. He also has cousins in the Northport and Grand Traverse areas. In accordance with his wishes, cremation has taken place. A private burial will be held at a later date. A memorial service will be held in the spring on a date to be announced. The family would like to thank the nurses and staff of the Leelanau Memorial Long Term Care Facility for the wonderful care provided to Wendel. Memorials may be directed to the Northport Trinity Church. Arrangements are with the Martinson Funeral Home of Suttons Bay. SWARTZ CREEK - Dale L. Redman, 61, of Swartz Creek, died Friday, March 18, 2005, at his residence. He had resided in Swartz Creek since 1992, coming from Flint. Dale was born in Flint Nov. 15, 1943, the son of Dale Floyd and Genevieve Mary (Prevost) Redman. He married Diana L. Ayers Oct. 8, 1993, in Swartz Creek. Dale was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and retired from GM Chevrolet Manufacturing after 30 years of service. Dale always had a smile, and put a smile on everyone else's faces. He also had a contagious laugh. He was a kind and loving husband and father. Surviving is his wife, Diana; son, Steven (Samantha) Redman of Flint; daughter, Kimberly (David) Holen of Flint; mother, Genevieve Bates of Flint; brother, Wayne (Kelly) Bates of Flint; step-daughter, Shannon (Timothy) McCalley of Traverse City; two step-sons, Cleaton John Cantrell of Suttons Bay and Russell Cantrell of Battle Creek; 16 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Dale Floyd Redman; sister, Sharon Gedman; and brother-in-law, John Long. Visitation will take place today, March 20, from 1 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 9 p.m. at Sharp Funeral Homes, Miller Road Chapel, 8138 Miller Rd. in Swartz Creek. Funeral services will be held at 5 p.m. Monday, March 21, at the funeral home, with visitation from 3 p.m. until the time of service. Pastor Larry Survance will officiate. Memorial contributions may be directed to Genesys Hospice. Sharp Funeral Home, Miller Road Chapel, is in charge of arrangements. TRAVERSE CITY - Rhea A. Snyder, 85, of Traverse City, died Friday, March 18, 2005, at Munson Hospice House. A former 25-year resident of Washington D.C., Rhea had been a resident of Traverse City since 1984. She was a 1937 graduate of Traverse City High School, attended Western Michigan College, was a life member of the Salvation Army in Washington D.C., was a member of P.E.O. Chapter E.H,. and was a member of Grace Episcopal Church. Rhea was an avid knitter, did beautiful needlepoint work and enjoyed dogs, especially Lilli and Jenny. Born August 17, 1919, in Empire, she was the daughter of Clarence N. and Katherine F. (Birdsey) Aldrich. On Oct. 12, 1940, in Detroit, she married Albert L. Snyder, who survives. Also surviving are two sisters, Ima Slaby of Traverse City and Louise (Chandler) Ketchum of Pittsburgh; sister-in-law, Evone Aldrich of Traverse City; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Eugene Aldrich. Memorial services will be held Tuesday, March 22, 2005, at 11 a.m., at Grace Episcopal Church with the Rev. D. Edward Emenheiser and the Rev. Becky Chamberlain officiating. Burial will take place in Oakwood Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to either the Grace Episcopal Church building fund or to the Cherryland Humane Society. Arrangements are being handled by Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home.
