Arrangements are being handled by Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home Memorial services for VERNA JEAN COOK, 71, of Traverse City, who died Wednesday, April 27, 2005, will be held Monday, May 2, 2005, at 10:30 a.m., in the multi-purpose room at Grand Traverse Pavilions. Arrangements are by the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City. Karin J. Bargar Died April 30, 2005 BELLAIRE - Karin J. Bargar, 78, of Bellaire, died in the early morning of Saturday, April 30, 2005, at Munson Medical Center. Born Jan. 3, 1927, in Bellaire, she was the daughter of Elmer R. and Ellen J. (Peterson) Fate. On Sept. 6, 1949, in Bryan, Ohio, she married James O. Bargar, who survives. A 1944 graduate of Bellaire High School, she earned a bachelor’s degree with a teaching certificate, and later a master’s degree, both from Michigan State University. She taught home economics in Clinton, Bellaire and Elsie. She retired from Pattengill Junior High School in Lansing after 25 years of teaching. After moving back to Bellaire from St. Johns in 1978, she worked for the Antrim County Commission of Aging for 10 years. Karin was past president of both the Bellaire Business and Professional Women’s Organization and the Bellaire Ladies Literary Club. An avid bridge player, she also enjoyed cooking, crafting and volunteering in charge of the display case at the Bellaire Public Library. Surviving, in addition to her husband, Jim, are three children, Jamie K. (James E.) Smith of Bellaire, Kevin J. (Maree) Bargar of Toledo, Ohio, and Jason K. (Julie) Bargar of Houston; sister-in-law, Marge Fate of LaJolla, Calif.; six grandchildren; and two nieces. Karin was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Donald R. Fate; and a niece, Sydney Fate-Barger. Visitation will be held Thursday, May 5, 2005, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m., at the Bellaire Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes. A private family service will be held. Memorial contributions in Karin’s name may be directed to the Antrim County Commission on Aging, PO Box 614, Bellaire, MI 49615. Joseph F. Dowdall 1924-2005 GRAND RAPIDS - Joseph F. Dowdall, former Acme resident, model-train hobbyist and award-winning journalist, passed away on Sunday, April 24, 2005, in Grand Rapids, from pancreatic cancer. He was 80. Dowdall lived in Acme for 16 years from 1988 through 2004. He was active with the Christ the King Ushers Club and was a regular volunteer for the Holiday Model Train Exhibits at the Opera House. Born in Detroit, Dowdall served in the United States Air Force during World War II as a radio operator on B24 Liberators. He worked at the Detroit Times, Detroit Free Press and Detroit News for over forty years as a copy boy, police beat reporter, Sunday features editor, sports writer, and motor sports editor. His efforts were recognized with several honors, including two Page One Awards and multiple national and state Motorsports Writer of the Year awards. Dowdall is survived by his wife of 54 years, Shirley; five children, Debbie (Scott) Deacon, David (Cheri), Michael (Cindy), Daniel (Christine) and Kathy (Kent) Forrester; and by 16 grandchildren. A memorial service for Joe Dowdall has been scheduled for Thursday, May 5, 2005, at 10 a.m., at St. Paul on the Lake Catholic Church in Grosse Pointe Farms Donations in his honor may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital. Richard Allen Potter Died April 27, 2005 KEWADIN - Richard Allen Potter, 71, passed away Wednesday, April 27, 2005, at his home in Kewadin, ending his battle with cancer. Richard was born in Traverse City on Nov. 17, 1934, to Julia (Sanders) and Norman Potter. Richard’s parents were the founders of Potter’s Bakery in 1929, where Richard worked as a baker in the family business for many years. He was the proud owner of the Elk Rapids Sweet Shop from the late 1970s to the early 1990s. Richard loved keeping his large yard mowed, replanting trees on his land and watching the wild birds that he devotedly fed and built birdhouses for. His greatest joy was walking around his beautiful property with his children when they came to visit him. He requested that his ashes be scattered over his little pond behind the house. Richard is survived by his five children, Richard (Amy) Potter Jr. of Traverse City, Tamara Kukuczka of Traverse City, Natalie Thomas of Manistee, Randy Potter of Kewadin, and Mark Potter of Jackson. He is also survived by his former wife, Evelyn (Huffman) Potter of Traverse City; his brother, James Potter of California; sister, Rosie (Julius) Marshall of Tuscon, Ariz.; six grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Richard was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Jerry Potter; and one sister-in-law, Lorretta (Springsteen) Potter, both of Traverse City; and one niece, Lori Marshall of California. Memorial services will be private. Cremation services were provided by the Covell Funeral Home.
