Detroit man charged in shooting incident

FROM STAFF REPORTS

PETOSKEY - A Detroit man has been charged with seven felonies for allegedly firing a shotgun through a local business' window last December, narrowly missing the owners sleeping inside.
Jerry Michael Steele, 39, had been in the Charlevoix County Jail on a breaking and entering charge. He was transferred to Emmet County and charged there Monday with seven felonies related to home invasion, breaking and entering, and using a firearm both as a convicted felon and during the commission of a felony.
The most serious charge, first-degree home invasion, carries a potential sentence of up to 20 years in prison.
A shotgun blast took out a window at Hammond Equipment on U.S. 31 South highway Dec. 21, missing owners Harry and Barb Hammond by inches as they slept, Sheriff Peter Wallin said.
The Hammonds' screams scared off the masked gunman, who fled in a waiting vehicle, Wallin said. Emmet warrants are pending against a 50-year-old Boyne City man investigators believe was the driver, the sheriff said.
