Obituaries


      DELORES M. BROWN, 72, of Lakes of the North in Antrim County, died Thursday, May 5, 2005, at Meadow Brook Medical Care Facility.
      Visitation will take place Sunday, May 8, 2005, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m., at the Mancelona Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes. Funeral services will be held on Monday, May 9, 2005, at 11 a.m., also at the funeral home.
     
      MARIE E. FIFAREK, 96, of Traverse City, died unexpectedly Friday, May 6, 2005, at her home.
      Arrangements will be announced by The Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home.
     
      Graveside services for ROBERT WELLS, who died March 20, 2005, will be held Monday, May 9, 2005, at 1 p.m., at the Leelanau Township Cemetery in Northport.
      The Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home is serving the family.
     
Jacob R. Gray
Died May 4, 2005
      STANWOOD - Jacob R. Gray, 93, of Canadian Lakes, died Wednesday, May 4, 2005, at Mecosta County General Hospital.
      He was born Oct. 3, 1911, in Weedville, Pa., the son of Clyde and Alice (Williams) Gray, and graduated from Johnsonburg High School in Pennsylvania in 1929.
      In 1936, he moved to Saginaw and worked for General Motors as a tool and die maker for 36 years, until retiring in 1971. Following his retirement, he moved to Cedar in 1978, and then to Canadian Lakes in 2004.
      Jacob was a member of the Saginaw Masonic Lodge for over 50 years. An avid hunter and fisherman, he shot the largest buck of his life just 2 years ago. He also began golfing in his 70s, and completed his last round just last Saturday.
      In 1934, he married Dorothy Kriegish, who preceded him in death in 1992.
      Surviving are one daughter, Sharon Gray; one son, Jerry (Liberty) Gray, of Canadian Lakes; nine grandchildren, Sheryl (Ralph) Ferraiuolo, William Markcum, Glenn (Tandy) Markcum, Elizabeth McCauley, Jerry (Jamie) Gray, Craig (Jen) Gray, Beth (David) Klein, Marcy (Tim) Purcey and Pastor David (Kendra) Gray; 33 great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; four sisters, Jane Barrons, Dorothy Breuckman, Mary Novak and Lois (George) Grear; one brother, John (Rose) Gray; and many nieces and nephews.
      He was also preceded in death by his brothers, Bill, Burton and Miles; and his sister, Olive.
      Memorial services will be Sunday, May 8, at 3 p.m., at the Mohnke Funeral Home, where Jacob's family will greet friends after 2 p.m. Pastor David Gray will officiate. Following cremation, burial will be in the Cleveland Township Cemetery in Cedar.
      In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to the American Heart Association may be left at the funeral home.
     
Kitty L. Powell
Died May 5, 2005
      KEWADIN - Kitty L. Powell, 80, of Kewadin, passed away Thursday, May 5, 2005, at her home. Kitty was born July 2, 1924, in Norwood, to William and Doris (Greeley) Jennett. On Oct. 17, 1942, she married her beloved husband, William N. Powell, in Traverse City.
      Kitty had many jobs during her life. She sold Tupperware and Amway, and was a secretary at Elk Rapids Public Schools.
      She loved playing cards, reading, and mushroom picking. She also loved to hold "come as you are parties" and enjoyed eating out. Kitty often spoke of her time spent living in Alaska and kept many memories from that experience.
      She is survived by her children, Patricia (Darwin) Rogers of Caledonia, Janet (Jack) Kamp of Howard City, William L. (Joyce) Powell of Kewadin and Ronald Powell of Kewadin; siblings, William (Anita) Jennett of Traverse City, Clara Parker of Traverse City, James (Nina) Jennett of Hastings and Richard (Judy) Jennett of Kalkaska; 15 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.
      Besides her parents, Kitty was preceded in death by her loving husband, Bill, in 2002; and a sister, Janey Jennett.
      A visitation will be held today, May 7, 2005, from 5 to 8 p.m., at the Covell Funeral Homes in Elk Rapids, with cremation to follow.
      Memorial contributions may be directed to Make-a-Wish Foundation.
      Arrangements have been entrusted to the Covell Funeral Homes of Elk Rapids.
     
Arthur C. Stephan
May 5, 2005
      KALAMAZOO - Mr. Stephan passed away early Thursday morning, May 5, 2005. He was born Oct. 13, 1912, in Detroit, son of the late William and Mary (Stiel) Stephan.
      Arthur attended elementary school in the Old Mission Peninsula and graduated from Traverse City High School. He earned his bachelor's of arts from Michigan State Agricultural College.
      Art was united in marriage to Viola Gretchen Crawford on Aug. 6, 1937, in Lansing. He raised his family on a small farm west of Traverse City, and attended the Long Lake Friends Church for many years. After retiring from the state of Michigan, he lived in Florida and Kalamazoo.
      Surviving are three children, William Stephan of Kalamazoo, Carolyn (Russell) DuBuis of Grand Rapids and Steven (Louise) Stephan of Newport News, Va.; eight grandchildren, Michael Stephan, Maria Stephan, Melissa (John) Beebe, Michael (Melissa) DuBuis, Brian (Kathleen) DuBuis, Eric (Beth) Stephan, Christopher (Ilene) Stephan and Amanda Stephan; and 10 great-grandchildren.
      Preceding him in death are his parents; one son, Ronald Stephan; and 10 brothers and sisters.
      Funeral services for Mr. Stephen will be on Monday, May 9, 2005, at 11 a.m., at Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Memorial Chapel, 622 S. Burdick Street, Kalamazoo. Friends may visit with the family on Monday morning from 10 a.m. until the time of services. Interment will be in Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens in Traverse City.
      As an expression of sympathy, memorial contributions may be directed to Upjohn Community Care Center, Kalamazoo.
