Dorothy "Dody" E. Simper
Died September 24, 2005
LELAND - Dorothy "Dody" Elizabeth Simper, 92, passed away peacefully on Saturday, Sept. 25, 2005, with her loving son, Tony, at her side.
Dody was born April 21, 1913, in Culver, Minn., to Theresa Marie and William A. Epperson. Her earliest years were spent in Minnesota, and she always vividly and fondly remembered going to powwows.
She rescued an orphaned fawn, Tommie, which began her lifelong love of animals. The family moved to Indiana, and later to Michigan, where she met and married her first husband, Mogens Klopp, who preceded her in death.
She studied French dressmaking for years, then modern dance, which she adored. She was always a dancer, always feeling the music. She explored many sides of her creativity.
Finding herself in the wrong class at the Society for Arts and Crafts in Detroit, she found she really liked the watercolor teacher, Fred Simper. They eventually married and built the first of several beautiful homes, which she designed herself, down to the finest detail.
Dody was a very joyous and loving spirit, and an incredible artist. She utilized many mediums in her work. Her use of color was incredible, her sense of design and content inspired. She was a truly instinctive artist. She said that when she painted, she turned off her brain.
Fred often remarked that even though he received more acclaim for his work, she was the better artist. She and Fred had several joint art shows in Detroit, Birmingham and northern Michigan.
Before becoming a mother for the first time at the age of thirty-nine, she insisted on natural childbirth. She learned about nutrition and healthy eating, and always had an organic garden, a compost pile and lots of flowers. She became an artist in the kitchen, creating the most fantastic menus for parties and holidays, the groaning board, Fred used to say.
Dody was a unique and amazing woman; she was a feminist, but she was also very feminine. She was born poor, but she had class and elegance that had nothing to do with money. She had boundless unconditional love for her family and friends, always encouraging and supportive.
She was so loved by so many; everyone who knew her felt how special she was. We'll always miss her, but her spirit does live through those whose lives she touched so deeply.
She is survived by her son, Anton Frederick Simper of Royal Oak; and her daughter, Walden Elizabeth Simper of Alameda, Calif.
She was preceded in death by her husband of over 50 years, Frederick, who passed away in 2002; and a grandchild, Tony's son, Shantan, who passed away in 1985.
The family will hold a gathering at Dody's home at a time and date to be determined.
Memorials may be directed to the Leelanau Conservancy, PO Box 1007, Leland, MI 49654.
Arrangements are with the Martinson Funeral Home of Suttons Bay.
