Dorothy Joan
'Jo' Bolton
Died September 17, 2005
EMPIRE - Dorothy Joan "Jo" Bolton was called home early Saturday morning, Sept. 17, 2005, surrounded by her loving husband of 52 years, family members, and the parish priest, Farther Garth Hilmer. She was 76.
Visitation will take place this evening, Monday, Sept. 19, from 6 to 8 p.m., with a 7:30 Rosary at St. Philip Neri Church in Empire, where she was a lifelong member. Funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 20. Burial will be in St. Philip Neri Cemetery. A luncheon will follow.
Jo was born May 8, 1929, the eldest child of Peter and Marion (Edwards) Manning, and raised on the Manning farm south of Empire. On Aug. 1, 1953, after graduation from Michigan State College, she married William B. Bolton, who survives.
After teaching school for a few years, including South Haven, the Empire School and Glen Lake, Jo then spent the next half-century selflessly giving to her family, church, friends and community. Some manifestations of this service were her years growing and arranging flowers for the weekly masses at St. Philip's; being one of the founding members of the Empire Area Heritage Group; and quilting for over 20 years with the group whose creations raised money for the Empire Volunteer Fire Department and the Empire Area Heritage Group. With all of this, she saved the finest of her creations of food, clothing and love for her family, especially her grandchildren.
As well as her husband, Bill, she is survived by all seven of her children and 18 grandchildren, Mike and Ruthy (Pleva) Bolton (Michaelina, Zachary and Ann), Mary Jo (Bolton) and David Hughes (William, Patrick and Kate), Elizabeth (Bolton) Klein, Patricia (Bolton) and Kim Marek (Keith, Christopher and Megan), Wyman and Maureen (Talbot) Bolton (Jack, Joseph and William), Joseph and Tara (Daugherty) Bolton (Kayla, Philip, Alexander and Brenna), and Peter and Mary (Cwengros) Bolton (Anthony and Matthew); siblings, David (Ruth) Manning, Marjorie (Robert) Frazine, Peter (Marilyn) Manning; and many nieces and nephews.
Memorials may be directed to the Empire Area Heritage Museum, or the Empire Volunteer Fire Department.
The family is being served by Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home, Traverse City.
