Obituaries

      ESTHER P. OLSON, 95, of Traverse City, died Saturday, Sept. 10, 2005, at the Grand Traverse Pavilions.
      Per her wishes cremation has taken place and a Memorial gathering will be held on Saturday, Sept. 24, from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home. An 11 a.m. Mass will follow at St. Francis Catholic Church.
      A complete obituary will follow in Friday's edition of the Traverse City Record-Eagle.

      JOAN E. PAVIA, 62, of South Lyon, formerly of Traverse City, passed away May 16, 2005.
      A graveside service will be held on Oct. 8, 2005, at 11 a.m., at Omena Hillcrest Cemetery.
      Arrangements are by the Phillips Funeral Home in South Lyon.

      BETTY S. RASCHI, 81, passed away Monday, Sept. 19, 2005, at Munson Medical Center.
      A full obituary will be in a future edition of the Record-Eagle.

      SHIRLEY A. ZICK, 73, of Kalkaska, died Tuesday, Sept. 20, 2005, at her home.

Lester J. Fouch
Died September 16, 2005
      GRAYLING - Lester J. Fouch, 71, of Grayling, died Friday, Sept. 16, 2005. Born in Traverse City on June 30, 1934, he was the son of the late Ervin and Audrey (Palmer) Fouch. He married Audrey Palmer on June 21, 1954, at San Marcos, Texas.
      Lester served in the United States Army in the Korean War and received the National Defense Service Medal.
      He worked as a "jack of all trades" over the years, mostly in projects that were related to the building industry and general contracting. He and his wife, Audrey, owned and operated the River Country Motor Lodge in Grayling since 1989.
      A member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Grayling, Lester enjoyed gardening, hunting, fishing and camping.
      He is survived by his wife, Audrey; daughters, Debra (Tom) Burcar, Diane (Michael) Bettley and Cheri Julien, all of Traverse City, and Terry (Rick) McPhall of Interlochen; grandchildren, Chris Bettley, Ray York, Ryan and Luke McPhall, and Nathen and Nick Julien; great-grandchild, Curtis York; and sisters, Eileen (Dean) Boone of Charlotte and Carol Bussay of Grand Haven.
      Lester was preceded in death by his parents; a son-in-law, Cliff Julien; and a brother-in-law, Paul Bussay.
      A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Grayling Friday, Sept. 23, 2005, at 11 a.m., with Father Robert Nalley officiating. Interment will be on Friday, Sept. 23, 2005, with military honors being accorded at the Oakwood Cemetery in Traverse City. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.sorensonlockwood.com.

Lawrence J. Herman
Died September 18, 2005
      SUTTONS BAY - Lawrence Joseph Herman, 84, died Sunday, Sept. 18, 2005, at Munson Medical Center. Lawrence was born Sept. 12, 1921, in Keswick, the son of Joseph and Angeline (Flees) Herman. On Oct. 2, 1948, at St. Michael's Catholic Church, he married his loving wife of 56 years, Ruby Irene Clark, who survives.
      Larry will be remembered as a man with a work ethic who believed and practiced in turning the other cheek. For decades he was a licensed electrician. He wired and worked on most of the fruit processing plants in the northern Michigan area. Larry worked on F and M Packing, Peninsula Fruit Exchange, Morrison's Packing, Leelanau Fruit and Northern Michigan Fruit Exchange.
      He was a generous man who would help anyone who needed a hand. His generosity showed as he did the electrical work on all seven of his children's homes. Larry was a gifted mechanic and builder who built his own home, and through the years there wasn't anything that he couldn't fix. If there was a job to be done, Larry would stay not only until the job was done, but until the job was done right.
      He is survived by his wife, Ruby; two daughters, Louann (Richard) Dennis and Gloria (Charles) Kitterman; five sons, Lawrence Jr. (Denise), Ricky (Elaine), Timothy, Mark, and Kenneth (Kelly) Herman; five sisters, Martha Fate, Anna Schaub, Katherine Hughes, Emma Gilson and Irene Clark; four brothers, Edmund, Andrew, George and William Herman; 16 grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.
      Larry was preceded in death by his brother, John; and a sister, Helen Curry.
      Visitation will be held Thursday, Sept. 22, 2005, from 2 to 9 p.m., with a rosary to be prayed at 7:30 p.m., at the Martinson Funeral Home of Suttons Bay. The Mass of Christian Burial will be Friday, Sept. 23, at 10 a.m., at St. Mary's Parish of Lake Leelanau. Burial will follow in St. Michael's Catholic Cemetery in Suttons Bay. The Rev. Michael Janowski will serve as celebrant.

Stuart H. Thomson Sr.
Died September 17, 2005
      TRAVERSE CITY - Stuart H. Thomson Sr., 91, of Traverse City, formerly of Northville, died Saturday, Sept. 17, 2005, at Riverwind Senior Assisted Living. He lived in Northville for 40 years before moving to Traverse City.
      Born Oct. 14, 1913, in Big Beaver, he was the son of Leonard Adam and Myrtle Mable (Logan) Thomson. In 1937, he married Catherine E. Thomson, who preceded Stuart in death in 2003.
      He was a retired salesman who had worked for Michigan Seamless Tube Company. He also was on the tax levy board for Northville.
      Stuart was a past member of the First Presbyterian Church of Northville and of the Bethany Baptist Church of Traverse City, where he was an Elder and a Deacon. He was a very religious man and read the Bible almost everyday.
      He enjoyed square dancing with his wife and with their friends, and he liked reading mystery novels. He loved his family and the time he spent with them.
      Stuart is survived by his children, Stuart H. (Mary) Thomson Jr. of Downers Grove, Ill., and Janet (Pete) Gross of Williamston; five grandchildren, Peter, Garret, Thomas, James, and Megan; nine great-children, Amanda, Kim, Christopher, Steven, Michael, Jakob, Morgan, Dani and Rallie; and three great-great-grandchildren, Andrea, Brianna and Kaylee.
      He was preceded in death by his parents, wife and brothers.
      Funeral services were held Tuesday, Sept. 20, 2005, at the Casterline Funeral Home, Inc., in Northville. The Rev. Kent Clise officiated. Interment was in Rural Hill Cemetery in Northville.
      Memorial contributions may be directed to the Alzheimer's Association.
     
Ian Gordon Frost
Died August 29, 2005
      TRAVERSE CITY - Ian Gordon Frost, 72, of Traverse City, died peacefully at Munson Hospice House after an extended illness. He was born in Detroit on Dec. 26, 1932, to John and Kathryn (Cross) Frost.
      He graduated in 1955 from Alma College and on Aug. 20, 1955, he married Ruth Gilmore in Leominster, Mass.
      Ian began is high school teaching career in Bear Lake. In the fall of 1957 he moved to Harper Creek Schools near Battle Creek so that he could continue his studies towards his master's degree. After completing two master's degrees, he moved with his family to Ferndale in 1963, and took a new teaching job at Warren Consolidated Schools.
      During his 36« years, he taught science and coached several sports. In 1997 he was inducted into the High School Tennis Coaches Hall of Fame in Midland.
      He loved gardening and developed a passion for day lilies, sharing that interest with many friends. He loved to fish and enjoyed many trips to Canada with his father, and later with his sons and friends. Before retiring to Traverse City in 1991, they made their home in Lake Orion.
      Ian is survived by his loving family which includes his wife, Ruth; children, Cynthia (Terry) Nagle, Brian (Kathy) and Evan; and his sister, Patricia (Robert) Massel.
      A celebration of Ian's life will be held Saturday, Sept. 24, 2005, at 2 p.m., at the Traverse City Presbyterian Church.
      The family suggests memorial gifts to the hurricane relief fund of your choice in Ian's name.
