September 23, 2005ObituariesANNA FORTUNA, 78, of Cadillac, died Sunday, Sept. 16, 2005, at Tendercare of Traverse City.A memorial Mass from the Order of Christian Funerals will be celebrated Monday, Sept. 26, 2005, at 11 a.m., at Saint Ann Catholic Church in Cadillac. Cremation was at Oak Grove Cemetery with final interment to be in Maple Hill Cemetery in Cadillac. The family is being served by the Oak Grove Cremation Center GREGORY SCOTT OLNEY, 48, of Coloma, formerly of Beulah, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 20, 2005, at Munson Medical Center. Memorial services will be held at a later date at the First Congregational Church, U.C.C. in Benzonia. A full obituary will complete service information will be in a future edition of the Record-Eagle. The Bennett-Barz Funeral Home in Beulah is in charge of arrangements. Joseph Boothroyd Died September 20, 2005 TRAVERSE CITY - Joseph Boothroyd, 89, of Traverse City, passed away peacefully, Tuesday, Sept. 20, 2005, at the Pavilions with his family close by. Born June 6, 1916, in Brandon, Manitoba, Canada, Joseph was the son of Joseph and Elsie (Wareham) Boothroyd. Joseph graduated from Detroit Northwestern High School in 1935, where he was the captain of the High School ROTC. He married Ann David on Nov. 18, 1939, in Detroit. A resident of Traverse City since 1955, they moved here from Detroit. He was employed by Michigan Bell Telephone Company and retired as plant engineer after 43 years. Joseph was a scout master and active in scouting for many years. He sang in the Rotary Minstral Show for 30 years and was made an honorary Rotarian. He was a very active member of Central United Methodist Church and sang as a soloist in the church choir for many years. These and other activities speak of a life of charity Joseph is survived by his sons, Gregory W. (Lori) Boothroyd, Ph.D., of Traverse City, Phillip D. (Helene) Boothroyd of Kalamazoo, Perry (Patricia) Boothroyd of Cedar, Mark Boothroyd and Peter (Tanya) Boothroyd of Traverse City; his grandchildren, Jason, Scott, Jeff, Sonya, Jesse, Nathan and Myles; and his great-grandchildren, Max, Ross, Guinevere, Sonna and Leighton. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ann, whom he has joyfully joined in eternity with their Lord. Additional family members preceding his death include his parents; a daughter in infancy; his sisters, Catherine and Sarah Ellen; and his daughter-in-law, Dorothy Boothroyd. Memorial services will be held Monday, Sept. 26, at 11 a.m., at Central United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Tamara Williams officiating. Memorial contributions may be directed to Central United Methodist Church or to the Grand Traverse Pavilions. The family is being served by the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home. Rosetta Pearl Dewey Died September 21, 2005 BELLAIRE - Rosetta Pearl Dewey, 86, of Bellaire, died Wednesday, Sept. 21, 2005, at home. Pearl was born July 13, 1919, in Chestonia Township, the daughter of Robert and Hazel (Farrell) Watrous. Known to many as Grandma, she was the head cook for the Bellaire Public Schools, working there for 39 years. She farmed with her husband, Lewis, most of her life, and also spent summers housekeeping for residents of Lake Bellaire. Along with her family, her greatest love was cooking for others, berry picking and vegetable gardening. She attended the Bellaire Wesleyan Church and participated with the Mission Group. She was also a member of the Antrim County Farm Bureau. On Dec. 25, 1937, she married Lewis Dewey, who preceded her in death in 1996. Also preceding her in death were six brothers, Earl, Harry, Jacob, Robert, Walt and Pete Watrous; and four sisters, Mildred Rinckey, Flora Watrous, Ruth Perkins-Goodrich and Irene Dewey. Surviving are five children, William Dewey of Ionia, Charles (Jackie) Dewey of Bellaire, Connie Dewey of Bellaire, Peggy Dewey of Bellaire and Dorothy (Dennis) Archer of East Jordan; a sister, Donna Thomas of Bellaire; 13 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; and many nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends today, Sept. 23, 2005, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m., at the Bellaire Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes. Funeral services will be held Saturday, Sept. 24, 2005, at 11 a.m., at the Bellaire Wesleyan Church, with the Rev. Steve Eccles officiating. Interment will follow in Eldred Cemetery in Kearney Township. Memorials may be made to the Bellaire Wesleyan Church building fund. Frances C. Dryden Died September 21, 2005 TRAVERSE CITY - Frances C. Dryden, 90, of Traverse City, died Wednesday, Sept. 21, 2005, at Orchard Creek Nursing Home. On Feb. 17, 1915, Frances was born to Victor and Victoria (Gajewski) Halicki in Detroit. Frances married J. Richard Dryden on Sept. 17, 1938, at St. Ambrose Catholic Church in Detroit. A member of the Christian Mothers Club, Frances was a devout Catholic throughout her life. She enjoyed sewing, knitting, crocheting, playing cards and cooking. Frances loved her family and is survived by her daughter, Jean (Dr. Larry) Skendzel of Traverse City; son, David R. (Rita) Dryden of Sugar Grove, Ohio; 10 grandchildren, Laurence P. (Missy) Skendzel, Kathryn A. (Alex) Swiderski, Richard A. (Carolyn) Skendzel, Mary Beth (Joel) Myler, Daniel E. (Carrie) Skendzel, Jeanine M. Skendzel, David C. (Christine) Dryden, Joseph E. (Wendi) Dryden, Michael P. (Beth) Dryden and Tricia D. (Rich) Frye; many great-grandchildren; one sister, Victoria (Jack) Jerome of Tampa, Fla.; and many nieces and nephews. Frances was preceded in death by her parents; husband, J. Richard Dryden in 2000; two brothers, William and Theodore Halicki; and stepmother, Sophia Halicki. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday, Sept. 24, 2005, at 10 a.m., at Immaculate Conception Church, where visitation will take place one hour prior to the Mass. Father James Hayden will serve as celebrant. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Covell Funeral Home of Traverse City. Esther P. Olson Died September 10, 2005 TRAVERSE CITY - Esther P. Olson, 95, of Traverse City, died at the Grand Traverse Pavilions Saturday, Sept. 10, 2005, with the loving staff at her side. Esther was born on May 22, 1910, to Amasa and Ethel (Bingham) Brown in Traverse City. Esther worked many years as a U.S. Federal Secretary and was a member of St. Francis Catholic Church. Sue is survived by her two sons, Whitney Talbott of Brandon, Fla., and David Talbott of Aurora, Ill.; five grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; son-in-law, Benjamin Hutto; many other family members and friends; also her special friend, Joyce Garthe. Esther was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Suzanne Hutto; a brother, David Brown; and a sister, Ruth Wotalewicz. Per her wishes, cremation has taken place and a Memorial gathering will be held on Saturday, Sept. 24, from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home. An 11 a.m. Mass will follow at St. Francis Catholic Church. Edward Earl Patterson Died September 20, 2005 GRAWN - Edward Earl Patterson, 86, of Grawn, died Tuesday, Sept. 20, 2005, at Munson Medical Center. Born Sept. 25, 1918, in Grand Rapids, he was the son of Earl and Inez Patterson. His first wife, Ethel Marie Zeits, preceded him in death in 1950; and his second wife, Mary Louise Payne, preceded him in death in 1979. Ed worked as a salesman for Standard Brands in Grand Rapids and Sidell Food Company in Chicago for many years. He is survived by his son, James Edward Patterson; daughters, Sally Salisbury, Patricia (Richard) Augustine, Judy (Gary) Duba and Diane Lexie; 13 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. Ed also was preceded in death by his son, John in 1970; and sister, Mary Jane Collins. A memorial Mass will be held Saturday, Sept. 24, 2005, at 11 a.m., at St. Rita Catholic Church in Maple City, with the Rev. Garth Hilmer officiating. Arrangements are with the Martinson Funeral Home of Suttons Bay.
