Musicians get in on the action at Open Space

Local and national performers provide entertainment

TRAVERSE CITY — Forget the flashy red carpet or the endless stream of trailers, the pre-movie time during the Traverse City Film Festival will have a tune all its own.

Each evening at the Open Space, a variety of musical genres will welcome visitors at 7:30 p.m. and conclude around 9:15 p.m. when the fans kick on to inflate the screen. In addition to bayside performances, musicians will be on hand at the three indoor viewing locations prior to some screenings.

Performance manager and local musician Tom Kaufmann coordinated the schedule, which includes local and national musicians and capitalizes on last year's last-minute decision to provide musicians.

"People really enjoyed the music," he said. "It's not something most film festivals do, it's a local touch to make this unique."

Deb Lake, general director for the film festival, said the performances last year added a nice touch.

"We wanted to continue something people enjoyed," she said.

Lake added that several musicians requested to be included this year.

"Some are coming in from out of state who want to be part of the festival and basically just support the festival in any way they can," she said.

Traverse City resident Michael Sullivan will preform "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" with his band Song of the Lakes before the showing of "The Wizard of Oz" on Friday night. Sullivan said his participation in the event blends two of his loves — performance and film.

"We wanted to support the effort because it's a tremendous community event and the electricity in town was palpable (last year)," he said. "Art really brings people together."

Another element Sullivan is enthusiastic about is the fact that his son's band, Egon, will also be performing. Kyle Sullivan, a recent graduate of Michigan State University, and three of his classmates from Traverse City West Senior High will perform Jamiroquai's song "Canned Heat" featured in "Napoleon Dynamite" during their 45-minute set Thursday night.

"It will be a good fit, we play upbeat dance music," Kyle Sullivan said. "This will be our biggest crowd, for sure, it's a pretty big undertaking."
