Recipe of the Week

Pretzel Turtles

Geri Ziemba of Traverse City submitted this week's recipe.

"Last February my husband and I visited his cousin Jerry and wife Joan in St. Louis on our way to New Mexico,” writes Geri. "Since then, Joan has shared with us several recipes.

"The one I get the most ooohs and aaahs from is for 'Pretzel Turtles.' The recipe is so easy and fun to do. The hardest part is removing the wrapper from the Rolo candies.”

From the sound of it, though, it's worth the effort.

"I don't have any young children in my home, but I'm sure this is a kid-friendly recipe,” added Geri.

Pretzel Turtles

  • Hanover pretzels (the "Snap” variety — the kind that look like a grid)
  • Rolo candies, wrappers removed
  • Pecans

Spray a cookie sheet (not necessary if it's Teflon type). Place as many pretzels as you can in a row, leaving just a small space in between. (Geri can put 10 in a row on her cookie sheet.) Then put a Rolo candy on each and repeat as many rows as your cookie sheet will allow. (Geri has been able to make eight rows, which comes to 80 candies.)

Place the cookie sheet in a preheated 250° oven for five minutes. Remove and let set for a few minutes to cool, but still soft. Carefully press a pecan half on each Rolo candy and remove the candy from the cookie sheet. Then put the container of Turtles in the refrigerator just long enough for them to set up nicely.
