January 7, 2006Survivor now faces cocaine chargesTRAVERSE CITY - A man whose girlfriend was killed and four daughters seriously injured in an accident allegedly caused by a woman under the influence of marijuana now faces his own drug charges.Randy Dean Elkins, 34, of Traverse City, is being charged with five counts of manufacturing and delivering a controlled substance after he allegedly sold cocaine to undercover Traverse Narcotics Team officers beginning Dec. 15. Elkins allegedly sold less than 50 grams of cocaine to undercover detectives on five separate occasions between Dec. 15 and Thursday, including four sales at his home on Pinspar Lane in Traverse City. Elkins, who faces up to 20 years in prison if convicted, was driving a car carrying his four daughters and girlfriend, Angela Grierson, 28, when it was hit by a sport utility vehicle driven by Delores Derror on M-72 in January 2004. Police said Derror lost control of her vehicle and hit Elkins' car, killing Grierson, of Mancelona, and paralyzing his daughters, Brittany and Eden, then 10 and 11 years old. Police said they found five marijuana cigarettes in Derror's possession and said she admitted to smoking one about four hours prior to the crash. Derror, who was charged with operating a vehicle under the influence of drugs causing death and three charges of causing serious injury, awaits trial in 13th Circuit Court after a series of motions filed with the Michigan Court of Appeals. Elkins, who is being held in the Grand Traverse County Jail on $50,000 bond, is scheduled to appear in court on Jan. 20.
