04/28/2006Let's do lunchCentre Street Café![]() Peter Boothroyd makes sandwiches at Centre Street Cafe. Address: 1125 Centre Street, Traverse City (CLICK HERE FOR MAP) Cuisine: Dine-in, carryout, and catered lunch menu described by owner, Pete Boothroyd, as "The Best Gourmet Urban Cuisine". Unique, stacked sandwiches, homemade soups, monster salads. Prices: Sandwiches - $6 to $8 Salads - $4.50 to $8.25; Soups - $3 to $4 (cup vs. bowl) The Center Street Café reminds me of the campus diners I frequented in the late 60s. Vinyl covered red, black and gray padded metal chairs and laminated tables are "home in the kitchen" comfortable. The café accommodates about 30 people. An eclectic display of local artwork covers the walls. Pete said of his his kitchen creations: "I'm not happy unless my food has distinct flavors. I try to mix and blend ingredients that balance, have a harmony about them", says Pete. "I love it when someone bites into a sandwich and says, Wow!" Favorites: Waitress Becky said the customer favorite is probably the "Smokin' Jo" turkey sandwich. I take her advice and order it. My Meal: My "Smokin' Jo" arrived moments later. It was stacked 3 inches high on fresh, crusty, sour rye bread. Smoked turkey, turkey bacon, smoked cheddar, onion, tomato, lettuce and Mesquite mayo. A dill pickle, tortilla chips, and a scoop of black bean dip on the side. Local business folk came in to dine or pick up a favorite. Pete and his staff keep the sandwiches coming, working tirelessly to get orders out fast. I noticed PC printed bulletins in the entrance way, at the register, on the wall, announcing "Lunch Specials" like the Portabella sandwich. Centre Street also offers vegetarian selections labeled "Veg Out".
