Photo StoryA blast of art
Anilka Delancey, 7, of the Cherry Knoll Children's Center, works on a loom. Students were leaving with their paintings, done in black and bright colors in a way to make them appear three-dimensional when viewed with 3-D glasses. Others collected the T-shirts they had decorated by twirling the shirt around a stick and spraying it with paint. "They see something they've created and they're so proud of themselves," said Libby Robold as volunteers cleaned up children's paintings behind her. "It really builds their self-esteem." Robold, an integrative arts therapist at the New Campus School was one of several artists and art therapists who conducted workshops for students Thursday and Friday at the Dennos Museum for the 10th Annual VSA arts Michigan-Grand Traverse Area Artsense Festival. The event is held each year to introduce children, both abled and disabled, to new experiences through art and to make new friends. Students in groups explore three of the festival's five workshops, such as musical instruments, painting or dance. Each workshop is taught by a professional artist or art therapist. More than 200 children attended the event, which was broken up over two days for students in Grades K-6 and Grades 7-12. This year's theme was "A Blast from the Past," to tie in with the museum's exhibit by the same name. T-shirts were decorated in a tie-dye pattern and students danced to sounds of the 1960s. "When they can make a sound with an instrument, that really gives them a sense of accomplishment," said Tom Kaufmann, a Traverse City musician who taught the musical instruments workshop. VSA arts is a international nonprofit organization founded in 1974; the Grand Traverse Area District was started in 1994.
