TRAVERSE CITY — So much for all the talk about what Suttons Bay lost to graduation. The Norsemen still have plenty of quality football players on their roster. Traverse City St. Francis can attest to that.

Prep practices start up; high hopes abound

'I want community to be proud of Trojan football'
TRAVERSE CITY — Tom Passinault met his future players for the first time on Friday. And he got their attention right away. "I was wondering what you guys looked like, and I was right — you're ugly,” Passinault joked as he addressed a group of 50 potential football players at Traverse City Central High School after school.

GLIAC schools land four area recruits
TRAVERSE CITY — Petoskey's Chad Ellis had four scholarship offers to mull over, including one to Hillsdale College where his father played. But a trip to the Upper Peninsula late last month helped sway the 6-foot-2, 190-pound linebacker. Michigan Tech, it will be.

FEBRUARY 3, 2007
Trojans turn to Passinault
TRAVERSE CITY — Tom Passinault was ready for a change. He verbally agreed to accept the jobs Thursday.

NOVEMBER 25, 2006
Lowell's Nichol is top player in Class A
GRAND RAPIDS — Lowell quarterback Keith Nichol tried to elude defensive linemen and personal accolades for three seasons. But the 6-foot-2, 195-pound senior — who plans to graduate next month and enroll at Michigan State in January — cannot escape them all.

Nouvel has its
way with Norse

GRAYLING — How tough was it for Suttons Bay? To figure it out took just one play. Saginaw Nouvel started the game at its own 4-yard line, promptly fumbled the ball and wound up scoring. The Panthers (11-0) scored on their first four possessions en route to a 35-6 victory over Suttons Bay on Saturday in a Division 6 state football semifinal.

NOVEMBER 17, 2006
Norse ready for Nouvel's speed
SUTTONS BAY — After speeding to the state football semifinals, Suttons Bay wants things to slow down on Saturday. Slow way down. Saginaw Nouvel (10-0) has speed to burn — or at least two speed burners — and Suttons Bay (12-0) will look to put it out in the Division 6 semifinal at Grayling. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.

Kickoff Fall Football Preview

NOVEMBER 12, 2006
Sacred Heart beats Frankfort, 22-20
MOUNT PLEASANT — With the game on the line, the ball seemed to find its way into Matt Miesch's hands. And misfortune seemed to find its way to the Frankfort Panthers — again.

NOVEMBER 11, 2006
Norse push past Calumet
MARQUETTE — Suttons Bay had pep Friday night. Pep as in Jordan Peplinski. The Norsemen turned three Peplinski touchdown runs into a 20-14 Division 6 regional football victory over Calumet at the Superior Dome.

NOVEMBER 10, 2006
Trojan warfare in D-8
TRAVERSE CITY — One school is attempting to build on its tradition. The other is hoping to start one. That will be the scenario Saturday night when Crystal Falls Forest Park and Central Lake collide in a Division 8 regional football final at the Superior Dome in Marquette.

NOVEMBER 9, 2006
Trip a TCSF tradition
TRAVERSE CITY — Tradition. It's at the heart of Traverse City St. Francis football. So it's no wonder that, given the choice of playing in the Superior Dome in Marquette or sticking a little closer to home, St. Francis head coach Josh Sellers chose the dome. Without hesitation.

NOVEMBER 3, 2006
Glads face Vandals' 'Scotgun'
TRAVERSE CITY — If watching Merrill's offense gives Traverse City St. Francis football coach Josh Sellers a sense of déjà vu, it's no wonder. The Vandals (7-3), who take on the Gladiators (9-1) in the Division 7 district finals on Saturday at 1 p.m. at Thirlby Field, run a version of the same offense — the "Scotgun" — that Alma College ran when Sellers played there.

Playoff-tested Titans prepare for 8-1 Holt
TRAVERSE CITY — The prep football playoffs officially begin on Friday. The playoffs began for Traverse City West the night of Sept. 9, when the Titans walked off the Thirbly Field turf after a loss to Birmingham Brother Rice. The Titans, who started the season with three straight losses, had to run the table to get into the postseason and that's exactly what happened. The reward for TC West (6-3) is a trip to Holt (8-1) in a Division 1 playoff opener on Friday.
